445.0. "89 Skins Game..." by MSEE::KELLEY (got to get the short game togther) Tue Nov 15 1988 12:38

    	In case you haven't seen it. In the new issue of Golf Digest
    	they state that the players in this years Skins Game (Nov 26th
    	and 27th) will be Trevino, Nicklaus, Floyd, and Strange...

    	Anybody heard how Jacks back is doing? Is he going to be able
    	to play?

    	Who is your pick...!

    I'll pick the guy who has had to play alot of nassau's with nothing
    in his pocket to back him up ----- TREVINO

    THE SMART PICK

                        CURTIS STRANGE

445.3Celtics in seven!HARLEY::DAVEit's tee time !!!Tue Nov 15 1988 15:368
    The peoples pick: Jack of course

    He wins it all on number 18 with a second shot
    sent from heaven. Then throws his clubs in the
    drink and promises to win a seventh masters
    before retiring. Can you say "dreamer".

    Dave
445.4DALES DURO, LEE!!JAWS::DIAZLa Ultima y Nos VamosTue Nov 15 1988 15:503
    I have to pick TREVINO. You know, he might get another ace.

    Tavo (We Mexicans stick together :^)
445.5Jack's Back (?)ODIXIE::WESTCLGator GolferTue Nov 15 1988 18:066
    Jack was interviewed during the Nabisco Pebble Beach tourney last
    weekend and said that recent cortizone shots have him pain free
    at present, and that he has been swinging some short clubs. He
    expects to play in the skins game.

    My pick - Curtis Strange
445.6WORDS::NISKALABetter off dead, than Sooner Red!Wed Nov 16 1988 11:041
    	Curtis, the man is on a roll.......
445.7Floyd in seven!!GRANPA::KVENEZIOThu Nov 17 1988 11:305
    Don't count out Floyd. He might seem the underdog but he can putt
    and that seems to be what counts. He also reminds me of a guy who
    has played in some BIG money nassau's.

    Ken
445.8Money PlayersDIXIE1::WESTCLGator GolferThu Nov 17 1988 12:403
    Isn't it a shame that the participants don't have to put up their
    own money for this skins game. Only then would we know who the
    REAL money players are.
445.9FRSBEE::GARYThu Nov 17 1988 15:1710
    True, it would be interesting, but who'd want to put up their own
    money to have cameras up the @$$ and microphones up the nose so
    the network/s can make big bucks. Do any of the pros play their
    own skins games off camera?

    On another note, is there any guaranteed appearance money?

    I like Floyd's chances too, he's got the look of a gambler.

445.10results...MSEE::KELLEYgot to get the short game togtherMon Nov 28 1988 11:3015

    	Well, Ray sure came through with some great golf and winning
    	$290,000 (I think it was) and a car...!

    	Did anybody happen to notice what type irons Ray was using?
    	They looked like cavity backs to me (Ping?)? If they were
    	then it makes it particularly funny since the anouncer commented
    	that he was the only one using a wooden driver and was a
	traditionalist (ya, even Jack was using a metal driver).

    	Better luck next time for Curtis (he could have used the money
    	too, ha ha)...

    	Gene

445.11Floyd's the OneGRANPA::KVENEZIOMon Nov 28 1988 14:1713
    Ref: .10

    Gene, don't forget the Rolex (about $7K). I was also very interested
    in the clubs he was using. It was a cavity back iron for sure. If
    I'm not mistaken Floyd played for the Ram name a few years ago.
    They could very well be Accubar (sp.) irons even though they are not
    known as the top of the line iron. One thing I did notice was that
    the irons had a ferrule. That generally rules out Ping and most
    other cast irons.

    It's a mystery to me.

445.12Not classic swings, but the results were fine!MTWAIN::F_MCGOWANCi stiamo gia divertendo?Mon Nov 28 1988 15:394
    Re. 10...sure looked like cavity-backs on my TV set! The other thing
    that stood out was the unorthodox swings of Floyd and Trevino, proving
    that it ain't how, it's how many.

445.13Commercials can be fun tooSALEM::YACKELMon Nov 28 1988 16:246

     Other than watching the great play, I get a kick out of some of
     the  "golf/Toyota" commercials.

    well, i picked a loser when i picked curtis.

    i think it would me interesting to have some players who know how
    to have fun on the course. my pick for next years group would be...

                      KEN GREEN

                      MAC O GRADY

                      PETER JACOBSON

                      LEE TRIVINO

    we could still see great golf and have a few laughs while we watch.
