434.0. "indoor golf" by MJOSWS::FAGLEY (beat the resident) Wed Nov 02 1988 17:17

I stopped at a local pro shop today and ran into an interesting
item. INDOOR GOLF!!! The way it works follows:

They have a room about 20 x 30 with a wall size video screen at
one end. On the screen they project the view you would have off
the tee. You hit the ball at the screen. Three video cameras
track the flight of the ball and judge hook/slice ect. A display
tells you how far you hit the ball and the number of yards off-line.
The screen then shows you the view you would have for the second
shot. When you reach the green the display tells you where to putt
from on the indoor green (in front of the iron/wood mat). You putt
out and enter your putt strokes in the system.

They have two courses on tape... Spyglass Hill and Pebble Beach.
So you can play 36 different video golf holes. It costs 25$ per
hour, a foursome can play 18 in about 2 1/2 hours. 63$ divided four
ways is a cheap winter golf afternoon!!!!

GREAT IDEA... (maybe I'm in the wrong business!)

Great idea but not a new one. I played Congressional at an indoor
setup when I was 11 or thereabouts. That was mumbley...mumbley
years ago (>20). It was an idea that really never caught on.
My impression was it was fun for the first few holes, then got
tedious as you had to putt on the same astro-turf green over
and over. Guess I need that feel of real live grass, wind and
        sun to enjoy the game.

The indoor course I saw is supposedly the first in Pennsylvania.
It is located in State College, Pa. (The home of the Nittany Lions
and Joe Paterno). The name of the shop is the Tri K Golf Shop and
they are located on College Avenue (no affiliation with any outdoor
course). I'm on a residency at Penn State University, and will
surely get enough golf fever to try indoor golf later in the year.
(we are still playing outdoors a little as of today... it's supposed
to be 59 degrees and sunny today... looks like a half!!!!!!!)

This may be an old idea, but might be catching on.

Last night I was speaking with a friend of mine who lives in Warwick,
RI. He mentioned a new place had just opened which offered indoor
golf... the screen... etc. I told him I had just heard about it
    in this conference.

Anyway, it's in Warwick... very close to the airport. We are going
to give it a try some time. I will post exact directions when I
have them. He mentioned it was $20.00 an hour.

Yes indeed that indoor golf has been very popular here in
Europe last couple of year.We have in Finland at a moment
no less than 20 indoor golf simulators. They call it "Golf
simulator".We have the same courses as you seem to have and
some European courses as Vale de Lobo in Spain.Last winter
we run Digital Championchip Open in Indoor Golf. The winner
had the result of 9 hole 31.The rules are that you get 3/4
of your handicap.Last spring in Scotland (Gleneagels Club)
there were World Championship Competitions of the indoor
golf.About 20 countries were present USA included. The came
was 2 man team medal. The winner was Norway tehn (of course)
Finland and the third was Wales.Hope you good winter excecisers
    	with indoor golf.

434.6New Indoor Golf facility opening soon!!!SA1794::WELLSPEAKHope my little world will last...Tue Mar 21 1989 17:4410
There is a place called "Birdies and Bogies" opening up in the
Holyoke Mall in, you guessed it, Holyoke Mass. just off of RT 91,
that is supposed to have 5 of these so called golf simulators.
It also has advertised as having the largest indoor miniature golf
course in New England, complete with sand traps and water hazards.
It is scheduled to open on March 24th, offering courses on the
simulators such as, Augusta, Pebble and the TPC in Sawgrass. Sounds
    very interesting.

434.7UpdateSA1794::WELLSPEAKKeystone + Giants, VERY NICE!!!Tue Nov 21 1989 11:3316
I've been asked to give an update on Birdies and Bogies at the
Holyoke Mall in Holyoke Mass.. Well, from what I saw, there were
only 3 simulators, not 5. The courses I remeber were Spyglass on
one simulator, La Quinta on another and I forget the third one.
The indoor miniature course, is huge, and complete with sand traps
and water hazards. Many holes require an almost perfect shot to
get close. You can almost always play it safe, but expect more
than a 10 footer if you do. If you go for it in one, many times
if you miss just a bit, you'll end up in sand or water. I haven't
actually played there yet, just observed. And I haven't even seen
what the simulators are like when they're on and someone is playing.
They pull a big tarp over the entrance, so noone can see the people
playing. Anyway, I will give a further update, once I've tried
it out. Probably within the next 2 months, or maybe even sooner.

I have. It's great during the winter time. I just found last
year and went 2 or 3 times in late Feb. to get the muscles started
    up for the season.

I think they have a membership, but I won't join it. When I
was there it cost $7.00 for as long as you could take it or they
closed. Basically you hit the ball about 10 feet into a net. Ok
for telling you where the ball starts out, but it's hard to tell
where it would end up. :^)

They also give lessons and have a small pro shop.

Today's Worcester Telegram Has an article about this somewhere in the
    Sports sesction.

$20 an hour with 2 hours needed for a 4-some to play 9 holes. The whole
place is done to look like a club. The snack bar has a "PATIO" area
that consists of 2 tables with umbrella so you feel like your outside.

They are looking for business people to go there and discuss business
over a round ? of golf.

They have bought the mailing list from Golf Digest so that's probably
how they got your name. I expect I'll be getting one of those ads
    today.

Oh yeah... the "simulators" cost between 30 and 50 K each. You can play
a few different coarses since they have more than 1 machine.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My son and I tried the simulators on their opening day. We got
in eight holes before our hour was up. My son is the golfer in the
family. We would have easily gotten in 9 holes if "someone" had come
a little closer to parring the first eight. The manager resumed
the machine so that we could finish the front nine.
We both enjoyed playing on the simulator and I know we'll be
spending some time there this coming winter.
The description in note 434 is quite accurate. As stated in
the flyer you can "use every club in your bag". Not only can you
use every club, but you swing as hard as if you were outdoors.
You can tee your ball or play off the "grass". When the simulator
determines that you've landed in a bunker, you play your next shot
from a recessed area that has sand colored carpeting in it.
If you land behind an obstacle, you can't use anything less
    than an eight iron.
When you land on the green, the simulator tells you from which
mark to putt. If your putt misses and comes to rest against the
screen or wall or is in, in other words, an unplayable lie, then you
move it to "E" and continue.
Should you decide to give it a try, take a good supply of balls
with you. The clock doesn't stop ticking while you're shagging balls!
We only picked ours up when both of us were on the green and the
first to putt was getting set up. They sell tees if you happen to
    be out them.
By the way, the pin is always in the center of the screen. At
the start of each hole an overview of the hole is projected on
the screen. You can review the layout at any time at the push of
    a button.
It's not the same as getting out on the course, but when the
courses are closed for the winter it's as close as you'll come.
Sorry if this rambled. I just popped things in as they came
    to mind.

Having played in the Wilson Pro-Am tournament at Pebble Beach, Spanish
Bay and Spy Glass in early December I was anxious to see how 'accurate'
and/or 'real' it was ... and happy to report it is as real as you
can get without actually being there!

For those of you that don't want to 'lose' it during the 'off' season
it is a 'fun' experience ...

My 'girl' and I played the front nine at Pebble Beach last Saturday
and going to play the back nine this Saturday ... and then on 20th,
3 of my golfin' buddies from N.H. are going to join me for the whole
    18 holes at Pebble Beach.

They also have Spy Glass, The Balfry in England and two (2) other
courses that didn't ring a bell with me.

In addition to the highly advanced golf simulators, they have a
driving range, sand trap and putting green.

    You can bring your own equipment or use theirs; tee times recommended;
each simulator can accomodate six (6) players if necessary (but
    not recommended...makes for a long round); golf instruction available;
and the fee is $24 per hour for the booth.

They have an introductory offer of a free half hour (worth $12)
    thru March...

I highly recommend it ... its a lot of fun ...

    Hi,
Visited the COMPUTER golf establishment in Worcester Saturday AM
and was very impressed with both the ambiance as well as the equipment
there. They even sell clubs, shoes and sweaters/shirts!

A threesome was playing "a course in Spain" and they were doing
well. You can also play Pebble Beach! Each of the threesome got
out of the computer exactly what they deserved after hitting their
shots( I payed alot of attention to how the mat/ball was struck).

It looks like alot of fun, but not cheap.

The place is located south of I290 on RT122 as you head towards
Grafton/Millbury. The reserve tee times by calling ahead(did not
    get their phone #).

    Enjoy.

-< SOMETIMES WE PLAY ALL YEAR >-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tom, I hate to say this but in Colo Springs we had 70+degrees over the
past weekend. Both Sat and Sun and no wind. Our biggest worry is pine
needles on the green but as has been stated, in this file, you just
brush them out of your line. It is predicted that we are going to have
a mild winter here and if that holds true we'll be playing all year.

We have been able to play all year in the past. I've played as late as
Dec 28th and as early as Jan 2nd and these weren't consecutive years.
However, the biggest drawback is if there is major snowfall. With the
sunlight and warm temps (40+) we get quite often the snow starts to
melt on top and then freezes at night and we end up with a thick ice
crust which makes melting that much more difficult.

All readers, say a few words that we have a mild winter here. That way
if a trip to Colorado comes up----maybe a round or two.

--< "Golf is ment to be played outside not inside !">---

Tom, I've played those machines inside here in Chicago. Somehow
they just don't recreate your normal shot and yardage.

    That's why if I don't play (outside),I'll only practice
    indoors !

I've been lucky playing golf in Chicago. The last two years I've
play at least 18 holes of golf each month of each year. For Chicago
that's amazing !! with the frigid cold weather that we can get here
during the winter (today it's -12 with wind-chill at -51 and 2 inches
    of snow).

I play on Dec 9th with temps at 36 with 10 mph winds. Chilly weather
but alot of fun ! Your normal drive will run anywhere from 30 to
60 yards more with the hard fairways. I shot 76 (4 over) and naturally
    had alot of fun.

I'm hoping for a thaw in January so I can get my first round in
    for the 90's.

    Happy Holidays !!

    Hi ,

Three of us tee'd off last night and played the La Quinta course.
It was a lot of fun! Felt great to swing the clubs after three
months layoff. The description in .0 is right on... We played 11
holes in two hours. I started off with 5 straight birdies, ending
the front with a 30... my fiends had bad luck getting used to
hitting off the mat and ended up in the high 40's. They left after
the 11th. I wanted to know if shooting 30 was the norm, and found
out I was on a record pace. The shop pro, (who I was talking to)
shot 30,30=60 round from the Pro tees. I was hitting from the mens
tees which are shorter. The pro and his friends insisted I continue
play, I only had $5.00 and needed $10.00, they let me play anyway.
Great group of people that run the shop! They were routing me on to
    	beat the record.

Well I ended up with a 33 on the back... so the record still
        stands!

    	Wait till next time ;)

434.29Seacoast has swing analyzers...MSEE::KELLEYGolfoholic - club makerMon Jan 08 1990 11:1611

I stopped by Seacoast golf this weekend. They have three sport-tech
swing analyzers not the simulators. I believe you can play a game
on the analyzer, but nothing like the simulators.

BTW, Seacoast has 4 hitting areas, three have the analyzers one of
which also has a video camera, they have an area for chipping
which also has a sand trap, and they have a putting green. $25
an hour for the use of the facility or $350 for the year...

My partner Tom and I played the indoor simulator in Worcester last
Friday ! We played Belfry in England ! Not what you'd call the
most interesting and challenging course around !! We wanted to play
Pebble Beach but you have to play the course that they have running
on the simlators. If you want a specific course ask when you call
for a tee-time which course is scheduled to be on at that time.

The cameras were off for our first nine ( oh sure ! blame the cameras!)
no really !! We had to aim right ! The guy finally watched when we got
to the 10th, they ended up adjusting the cameras ! (see !)
It was ok for the back nine ! We got 22 holes in in 2 hours ....

    observations ......

It's pretty acurate, if you play "standard golf" whats that you ask?

the cameras look at speed, loft, and spin of the ball (the screen means
nothing ) I hit low drives, no matter how good I hit them they went
    277 - 278 yds. but I was getting 260 off my 5 wood off the mat !!
I should have tee'd off with a 3 wood for more loft

you can't pitch and run, chips have to be high and soft !!

doglegs are very confusing, as to where and how far to hit the ball,
I hit many good shots that ended up in the water or O.B. it's almost
    like playing at night !!

it was alot of fun though !!1

    I shot 48 - 39 = 87 Tom shot 39 - 41 = 80 (double on 18th)

A new indoor golf site is open, in Ashland, Mass. I got the flyer for
it in yesterday's mail. It's located on Rt. 126, in a little shopping
mall just over the Framingham line (if you know where Marconi's
restaurant is, you'll know where I mean). From what's in the brochure,
it sounds like the same kind of thing mentioned in earlier notes, in
Worcester: "5 Famous Course" (including Pebble Beach, none others
named), simulator that indictes yardage, hook, slice.27' x 14'
"green," etc. No info on rates.

    Phone is 508-875-42.
