421.0. "A real hazard!" by ENGINE::WARFIELD (Gone Golfing) Mon Oct 17 1988 15:58

The group I play with had a very exciting (but dangerous) experience last
Saturday at Stow Acres. I was down the Cape but my friend recounted the story
as follows

They were teamed up with another twosome playing the South course. On the 4th
hole one of these two players hit his ball into/near the brook running down the
right hand side. This player got too close to the edge and immediately sunk
down into the peat bog up to his chin. My friend ran over to help rescue him
and ended up sinking up to his knees. It required everyone in the foursome to
pull the guy out.

The golfer wet and covered covered with peat headed to the clubhouse. He took
a showered, borrowed some clothes, and rejoined the group as they made the turn
at nine! (Now that's my sort of golfer. My friend didn't say what he shot but
said he was a good golfer. I would think that moments after a lift threatening
episode it would be difficult to play well.)

Chuckie who runs the place told them that when they were building the course
that they lost a whole Catapillar tractor on that hole. It sunk and they were
never able to recover it.)

421.1Stay left!NHL::MARCHETTIMama said there'd be days like this.Mon Oct 17 1988 16:568
A friend and I were playing Stow South a few years back. We were
paired with a man and his 15 year old son. The kid was looking for his
ball on the 4th, took one wrong step and suddenly was up to his
waist and sinking fast. Fortunately, we were near him and using
a club for him to grab, hauled him out before he got too deep.
I aim way left on that hole.

To avoid deaths and/or lawsuits, do they have a sign up warning
about this hazard? Why don't they have a fence around it? Wow,
golf is tough enough without having to deal with that kind of
        stuff!

Yep, there's a sign, but to be honest, it's not very alarming. When
I think of all the times I've ventured up to the edge of this bog,
I get chills thinking of what might have happened!

A couple of friends and I were playing a round there last year,
and Ed sliced his tee-shot into the bog on the 4th hole. I was
walking up the left side of the fairway when all of a sudden I heard
Ed yell. When he got back into view, he had mud up to his waist.
He used my towel to clean himself off as well as he could, and we
    continued playing.
When we stopped in the clubhouse at the turn, someone said to
Ed, "I see you found the peat bog on the 4th hole. You're lucky
    you didn't die."
At the time, we thought he was just joking. I'll be a bit more
careful on that hole from now on.
