394.0. "different iron types?" by MJOSWS::FAGLEY (beat the resident) Fri Sep 16 1988 14:08

There should be somebody out there who can answer a question or
two about different types of irons. I can't decide what I want
(ready for better clubs) and am trying to digest all the info I
can. I know there are "periferal weighted clubs" (ping, axiom, ect.),
"blades" (wilson staff?) and "radials" (hogan?). What type of swing,
are each intended for? What are the advantages/disadvantages of
each? What is a quality model of each, and price?

I currently have a cheap set of blades and have tried "periferals"
    which I'm not impressed with.

    	Rick,

I think there are a few notes in here dealing with the different
types of irons, but rather than trying to find them I will give
    	you my 2 cents worth.

"Blade" type irons are for the low handicapers/those people
that play 5 times a week +/those people that can make a consistent
swing 90% of the time, they have a SMALL sweet spot, but when
hit on that sweet spot have great results. The peripheral weighted
irons have a much larger sweet spot and thus are more forgiving
than the "blade" type irons, thus a better club for most people.
You also mentioned the Hogan Radials - they are neither a "blade"
nor a peripheral weighted club, they have a radial sole on them,
(a low prophile club) most of the weight of the club is in the
wider sole. The radial is a nice club and might be the way you
want to go, since you don't like the peripheral weighted clubs.
BTW, I make a custom club that looks exactly like the Hogan
Radial, if you are interested drop me a line (I can give you
a FAR BETTER price than you will see in ANY shop)...

    INTERESTING...Gene

I play about 54 holes a week and hope to keep improving.
I'll try to find a set of radials to hit and see what happens.
If I do like them, I'll sure check with you. I don't know where
you are but maybe shipping them to State College Pa. could be a
    problem?

I think I'm going to look for some good blades to hit also.
Might feel like my old clubs.

Rick, to confuse things further there are "cast" clubs and there
are "forged" clubs. Most perimeter weighted clubs are cast. i.e.
Ping, Titliest DTR, etc. the manufacturing method starts with a
mold and the club is cast from the mold. Forging is a completely
different process whereas the metal is heat treated to give it its
strength. Similar to how I-Beams are made. There are nothing wrong
with casting clubs and the better manufacturers can get very low
    tolerences. Most blades are forged.
You may want to hold off another month and wait for the Hogan Edge.
It is advertised as a perimeter weighted forged iron. I believe
it is a first. I spoke to the Hogan rep and he tells me it will
be introduced in late October. I'm interested myself in seeing and
possibly buying this club. I have played with forged Hogans for
16 years ( same set ) and last year built myself a set of Pings
but have since turned them into a demo set. My Hogans are treating
me just fine. I think its a matter of personal feel and looks.
I suggest you buy what feels good to you and forget the "sales gimmick"
    approach.

    Good Luck,
    Ken
394.4I keep trying othersMJOSWS::FAGLEYbeat the residentMon Sep 19 1988 13:149
I played two rounds on tour model (custom made) irons this weekend.
They were look-alike hogan radials. D1 swing weight, stiff shaft.
Liked the heavy feel they had. I can get 3-E (E is PW?) for $250.
I'm not going to get them because I'm not convinced yet. I'd like
more bite (bigger groove) than they had, and I didn't like the wedge.
I noticed quickly the added distance compared to my junk irons.
