375.0. "Laconia NH, Member/Guest" by GWYNED::DWHITE () Wed Aug 24 1988 20:43

    Member/Guest Tourney in Laconia HN

This past weekend the club I'm a member of (Laconia CC,
Laconia, NH) had our member guest tournament. What made
this tournament a little unusual (I think) was the
    magnitude of the prizes.

First a little background on the club. Laconia claims to
be a Don Ross course, with the orginal 9 opening around
1919 or so. It's an 18 hole course located near lake
Winnipesaukee. Par is 72, length 6500 yards and after
the first 6 holes it's tight. The parr three's are
    good one's (#7, 228 yards to a green guarded by a tree
and surrounded by sand traps, #10, 140 yards, elevated
green completely surrounded by sand traps, # 16, elevated
green, surrounded by trees, sand traps and in back of a
cliff having rough 6 inches deep, 212 yards.

104 2 man teams entered the 2 day, 36 hole tournament.
Scoring was by point quota, 80% accessment on handicaps.
Example 22 handicap plays to an 18. Points were as follows:
    above bogie 0 points
          bogie 1 point
    	  parr 2 points
          bird 3 points
          eagle 4 points
    doubleeagle 6 points
    	  ace 10 points
Quota was determined by 35-adjusted handicap.
Example 35-18=17 points needed to be 0.

    Now the prizes

    Total purse $44,850 plus

$1000 each day for closest to the pin (second shot, both parr 4's)
on the 6th and 8th holes

Free trip to Bermuda for closest to the pin on 10.

Micro wave oven for longest drive on 18

RCA TV for most accurate drive on 1 (line down center of fairway)

    Hole in one prizes:

    # 7 $60,000 condo
    #16 $25,000 van

    Entry fees were $150/team
Prize money was raised by tournament committee selling signs, etc.

First 18 places paid money with first place paying $12,000. 18th
    paid $600.

+1 won the tournament, -18 paid.

I've been a member at Laconia for three years and every year this
tournament has got better. There was a food tent set up by the 10th
tee, and all guests recieved $25 gift certificates redeemable at
the pro shop. Dinner was servered Friday and Saturday night for
    members and their playing partners.

I thought this was a great tournament, but perhaps it is nothing
extraordinary. Comments please, would like to hear about other
member guest tournaments. FYI, Laconia is open to the public,
although this tournament is restricted to members. Membership is
$850/year and that includes $130 annual food accessment. Green fees
for the public, $25 for 18 holes, no 9 hole rate.
Although this comes up a little short of New Hampshire's "live free
or die" this seems reasonable to me. Opinions please.

375.1WAS THIS A PRO OR AMATEUR TOURNAMENT????GAOV06::POMPHRETTThu Aug 25 1988 10:5011
$60000, $25000 and $12000 prizes? Why the hell would anyone
  want to turn pro!!!

On this side of the pond if a club were even to consider such
prizes for amateurs, it would be thrown out of the Golfing
  Union - and rightly so!

It sure looks as if could pay verrrry well indeed to become
  a handicap builder over there.
I still don't think I'm envious, but I'm beginning to wonder!

375.2Amateur's Only at LaconiaGWYNED::DWHITEThu Aug 25 1988 14:196
This is an amateur tournament. Handicap's are checked by the club
pro with the USGA and with each guest's home course pro. Anyone
who's handicap can not be verified enter's as scratch.
I suspect other private clubs have simular prizes in the US for
amateur's. There were absolutely no pro player's entered, all
    amateur's.

Those prizes are incredible. I just played in our member guest
(also a Donald Ross course). It is a four day tournament with thursday
qualifying round, then 3 days of round robin 9 hole matches. On
qualifying day my partner and I were third (net by combined handicap)
and won $78 in the pro shop. We won our flight and got $125 each
in the pro shop and $90 cash from side bets. We each got a golf
shirt with the tounament name and year on it. We got 2 meals (a
seafood and ribs dinner and a roast beef buffet) and a lunch. The
entry fee was $200/team. The chairman of the the tounament committee
told me that with the side action (place a bet on hitting the 198
yard par 3 10th) the tournament broke even on saturday night. I
believe that this is more the norm in member guest tounaments, at
least the few that I've played in.

With the prizes in that tournament I'll start "working" on my handicap
now. I'm sure that I could add several strokes to it by next year.
Then you can invite me as your guest. I'll give you 15% of the
    net for the invition. :-)

375.4What is your home course pleaseGWYNED::DWHITEThu Aug 25 1988 15:5510
    Kevin:

What club do you play out of please ? BTW, no one got a hole in
one at Laconia, but two shots were within 6 inches on 7. Imagine
winning a $60k condo on one golf swing ! My tee shot Sunday didn't
make the ladies tee. There were members at Laconia this year
looking for guests, in fact one of the members of my regular
foursome had to ask another member to find him a partner.

    Regards, DBW

    RE: < Note 375.4 by GWYNED::DWHITE >

I play out of Burlinton Country Club in Burlington Vermont.
It's not long (par 71 6480 whites) nor tight, but it's a true
Donald (eat your lunch) Ross course.

375.6?AMATUER STATUS?CGVAX2::BRADSHAWThu Aug 25 1988 20:312
WERE THE PRIZES CASH? IF SO , I BELIEVE THE NHGA WOULD APPRECIATE
A LIST OF THE WINNERS SO THEY CAN BE REMOVED FROM THE AMATUER RANKS!

An old (1983) copy of the Rules of Golf (hey -- the '88 rules
are in my bag, not my office) say the following:

           Rules of Amateur Status

Rule 1 -- Forfeiture of Amateur Status at Any Age

The following are examples of acts at any age which
violate the Definition of an Amateur Golfer and cause
           the forfeiture of amateur status:
                              .
                              .
                              .
           4. Prizes and Testimonials

Acceptance of a prize...of retail value exceeding $350...

Sounds like the story related in .0, if it is true, means that
the 36 players who finished in the 1st 18 teams, and the dozen or
so closest/longest winners, if they accepted their prizes, have
       lost their amateur status.

       --Mr Topaz

p.s.: None of the prizes in the upcoming Golf.Note tournament
will jeopardize the amatuer standing of the winners.
