348.0. "New Putter Fever" by VFOVAX::METCALF () Sun Jul 31 1988 19:56

I am seriously considering purchasing a new putter. I have a Bulls Eye
putter and looking into one of the following: T-Line, Slotline, or Ping.
I am a lefty and having a hard time finding any stores that allow me to
test these three out. Anyone have any comments on these or others I might
should consider?

Also does anyone have the Slotline Onset model? If so how do you like it?
How about a Slotline graphite shaft? Any ideas about graphite over steel
(I always thought graphite was for distance)?

Thanks!

348.1Ping for meEUCLID::WARFIELDGone GolfingMon Aug 01 1988 01:0212
I have a Ping ANSER 2 putter & like it a lot. The Ping putters provide a great
sense of touch. The weight distribution is evenly balanced so minor mishits
still roll true.

I like to try out different putters at the store. But my Ping putter
works well for me so I'm not going to mess with success.

My advice when shopping for a putter is to try many practice putts, when you
find one that you feel comfortable with, that feels good, & the ball goes
in the hole; take it to the counter and say, "I'll take this one, please."

348.2WHY CHANGE IF IT WORKS!SCOMAN::KOZAKWed Aug 03 1988 00:389
                 -<WHY THE CHANGE?>-

    I HAVE A SLOTLINE MYSELF. THE SHAFT ISN'T OFFSET IN ANY DIRECTION.
     I LOVE IT! THE BALANCE, WHETHER SHORT OR LONG PUTTS, FEELS THE
    SAME. YOU NEVER FEEL LIKE THE PUTTER "FLOATS" OFF LINE. I AGREE
    WITH 348.1. TRY MANY PUTTERS. DON'T BE AFFRAID TO SPEND HOURS
    DOING SO EITHER. IT'LL BE WORTH IT. GOOD LUCK.

348.3Slotline Onset thoughtsNCMWVX::LAFAVELooking for water...Wed Aug 03 1988 20:5715
    I have a Slotline Onset putter and overall like it a lot. The general
    balance and feel of the putter is very good. My only complaint
    with it has to do with the lie of the club itself. I prefer to
    keep my hands very close to my body which requires a lower lie
    on my clubs. Because my Slotline has a standard lie I tend to
    end up putting off of the back half of the putter. Something that
    I realize is not desirable but works ok.

    My advise is when you test out putters don't allow yourself to change
    your putting stroke to fit the putter. Find a putter that fits
    your putting stroke because in the end I am a firm believer in the
    philosophy that a comfortable club is a good club. Spending big
    money on a Slotline won't make you a good putter only a consistent
    stroke will, (this comes from a person with an impressive collection
    of assorted putters).

	RE: -.1

	You should check with a good golf repair shop they can change
	the loft on clubs. I would expect that they can also change
	the loft on your putter.

	I have a similar but opposite problem. My first putter had
	a very vertical shaft so I putt with a very upright position.

	I agree with develop a sound, consistent, putting stroke. I am
	even thinking of getting another putter and adding a little lead
	tape to use when I get to a course with much slower greens.
	That way I won't have to over exagerate my stroke or grip tightness.
	Usually much slower greens screw up my putting stroke for 2-3 rounds.
	(Faster greens always seem easier to adjust to.)

    Has anybody tried tose big putters and sand wedges. I hear they
    may be an alternative to the standard clubs

348.6help with a rusting putterDELNI::M_CARBONEThu May 11 1989 17:5310
    I just bought a new Hogan putter and am having a rustproblem with
   the blade. It is a precision milled putter, black blade. The problem
    I am having is if there is justthe slightest bit of moisture on
    the blade and I don't dry it thoroughly, the next day it is covered
    with rust. Does anyone know of something I can spray or put on the
    blade to try to avoid this. It is a really great putter and has
    definitely improved my play on the greens, so I'd hate to have to
    give it up because it is covered with rust.

    	Thanks for any help.....Mike

re.348.6
    I may be crazy Mike, but I think that I read somewhere that the
    face of the Hogan putter would rust for a while but will finally
    end up a real nice dark blue. I think if my play had improved on
    the greens though I wouldn't be too worried about what the putter
    looks like!! (if i didn't three putt it must have been four!!)

     I've got one too - same problem. All I can tell you is that the
    putter is made out of gun metal, hence its different feel. If the
    cosmetics bother you, call a gun shop and ask them about external
    rust on barrels...
