347.0. "Help it's slicing!!" by MJOSWS::FAGLEY (Rick Fagley State College PA.) Fri Jul 29 1988 19:26

    HELP!!!,

      I spent the last month watching a perfectly good golf game
    disintegrate.  The progression follows:

    1. I can hit my drives 280+ on good days, 1 mo. ago the ball started
    to fade. Now it is a real slice and I only hit it 220.

    2. 2 weeks ago all my Irons were perfect. I was on in regulation
    65% of the time (good for me!). My 150 yard shot was a smooth 8
    iron. About a week ago my 3,4 irons began slicing.

    3. This week everything is junk. Even my 7 and 8 iron slice.
    The only thing I can hit straight is my 3,5 woods in the fairway.

    Next week is the club championship, and I thought I could win my
    flight a month ago. Now, survival through the first round will
    be a chore.

    P.S. I'm trying moving my hands forward making my club more of
    an extension of my left arm with mixed results, I don't think I
    ever had them as far forward as now.

    Rick,

    	Try reading note 237. There might be something in there that
    will help you.

    Good Luck,

347.2duffers adviceNBC::BREENFri Jul 29 1988 20:458
    One principle I have heard and has helped me is that whether its
    a 2 ft putt or wood or an 8 iron the clubhead should always be
    accelerating at impact.
    Sometimes to avoid swinging too hard what we end up doing is allowing
    the club to slow down at impact.
    The trick is to accelerate at impact without swinging too hard.

    This is a duffers advice not a pro's
347.3move the ballMJBOOT::FAGLEYRick Fagley State College PA.Mon Aug 01 1988 13:224
    As it turns out, (the club pro gave me a lesson), the ball must
    be played back in my stance for irons and up in my stance for woods.
    So remember out there, move your irons back in your stance if you
    are hitting them thin and slicing.
347.4Ken Venturi's advice!MILVAX::FENTONMon Aug 01 1988 13:2822

    Out of Ken Venturi's artical in Golf magazine Oct. '86 he sais to
    "CLOSE THE GAP"!!!!! "Making a lateral shift of the hips ensures
    that you close the gap, returning the hips and knees to a square
    postion. Now you can make the correct weight shift clear the left
    hip and feel a free swing of the club through the ball." "When
    you correctly close the gap, the hands lag behind the lower body.
    Then centrifugal force takes over and you should feel resistance,
    as if something were pulling the club head away from you."

    You may be having a problem pushing the ball! I do too because
    I play softball and I have to always remember to line up my right
    hand "V" with my left shoulder. But now back to Ken. He wrote
    "trying to throw the hip toward the target freezes the left leg
    and the entire left side. That keeps the arms from moving freely,
    causing an in to out swing that drives the ball to the right."

    You shoul see that picture of Ken Venturi demonstrating that! He
    looks like Marty Barret getting an inside pitch and driving it to
    right!

    Good luck in your Tournament!
347.5Possible cure.COMET::BARTONSat Aug 06 1988 13:4112

    I occassionally go through the same problem of slicing and losing
    distance. The common ailment that I'm aware causing that is rocking
    onto the right side and/or allowing the head to go forward with
    the leg drive.

    CURE: Brace the backswing against the inside of the right foot (right
    handers) and assure the head stays behind the ball throughout the
    swing (allows body to rotate and close the club face).

    Good Luck,
    Bruce

      Sounds like your up tight. The old mental nightmare, follows
    me around every year, never fails. One club starts to go, then
    they all follow. The best cure I have found is to relax and play
    relaxed. This allows me slow my swing and body movements. Then
    the game will usually follow.
