328.0. "couses close to Portland, Me." by HARLEY::DAVE (where is my vette?) Wed Jul 13 1988 13:56

I will be in Portland, Maine this weekend. Do any of you know of
a public course within half an hours drive of down town Portland?
I would like to get out for a round in the afternoon on a new course.
    Thank you.

Riverside (an 18-hole & a 9-hole course). Very popular with the
    locals.
328.2A "local's" opinionRANGLY::STEVENS_JIMWed Jul 13 1988 19:4725

In Scarborough, which borders Portland, there is a very nice 18
hole course called Willowdale...The course is has a USGA rating
of 69. The entrance is right across from Scarborough Downs Race
    Track on Route 1.

Another nice course is in Westbrook, Rivermeadow. I've only played
there once, in May, on a rainy day..

Of the two, I'd recommend Willowdale..

However, if you want to play a really nice, scenic course, that
is a little further from Portland, Samoset in Rockland is SUPERB.
Rockland is about an hour's drive from Portland...

While I'm at it.. In Poland, about 30 minutes away, is Poland Springs.
I haven't been there in a long while, but it is a very nice course.

Whichever course you choose, I'm sure you'll enjoy.

I wouldn't rule out the one hour thing as Jim noted, however since Maine is
noted as the "Vacationland" state you should make tee times if possible. Most
popular courses are very crowded during our summer months. The small 9 holers
are where us "Locals" go and who knows you may meet up with a Lobstaman or
Clama and get some seafood wholesale to take back with ya 8^). Fairlawn in
Auburn is what I call a forgiving course, ie flat, wide fairways, and is well
maintained. And we mustn't forget the Augusta CounTRY CLUB in Manchester 8^)
it's only an hour as well. Both the AAC and the Samoset will run ya over $20.
Samoset being the best for the money, as shopping is great for the SO, and the
Apre' Golf is better, and the food, sailing...... Freeport (9) is tempting on
I95 and you can make a stop at L&L Beans. Good Luck and give us your thoughts
if you like.

And for that matter, there's the Public course in Rockland as well
that is my personal favorite and if you need a fourth... A little
tuffer than Fairlawn but another course that is in great shape.
FWIW Rockland/Camden is the scenic Coastal Community where Payton
    Place (the movie) was filmed.

Unfortunately I had to work on Saturday mornig repairing
the road to my house, so I got a late start to Portland.
Worse yet ate the blisters and cuts I received from working
    on the road.
