233.0. "Lessons from David Heuser? Any comments?" by MSD27::FITZPATRICK (Nathan Hale was Schizophrenic) Mon Mar 21 1988 16:43

    It's Spring!!!

    	For Christmas this year, my parents gave me a gift certificate
    for 5 lessons from David Heuser, the pro at Wayland and Stow. I
    scheduled the first lesson for next week, but would like to go to
    a driving range once or twice before the lesson to loosen up a bit.
    	I've seen mention of an indoor range in Framingham on Rte. 9,
    but I haven't been able to find it. Can someone provide me with
    a phone number so I can find out where it is and when it's open?

    	I'm also looking to buy new clubs, and was told when I scheduled
    my lesson that Dave makes clubs. Has anyone bought clubs from him
    that might be able to give me a recommendation? I was hoping that
    he would be able to advise me on what kind to get (stiffness, length,
    etc.). I'm also interested in opinions of Dave as a teacher. Anyone
    out there taken lessons from him?

    Thanks,
    -Tom

233.1"INDOOR GOLF RANGE"WILMER::GLASSMon Mar 21 1988 21:359
    Tom,
    David has a very good reputation as a teacher.
    The indoor range is about where Rt 9 and the Mass Pike join.It is
    in the old motel across from the Mexican restaurant on RT9 and in
    the East bound lane of RT9.The pro is Kurt S.from Framingham CC
    and you can call him at the pro shop.He also makes clubs!!!!
    Good luck and practice makes perfect as evidenced by Ben Hogan.

    Re. 0 -

    Dave cured my shank in about 10 minutes; he's a very fine teacher.
    And I bought a new driver from him for my father-in-law; a beautiful
    piece of work it is, too! I recommend him very highly on both counts.

    Dave Hueser is one of the best teaching Pro's in this area. I had
    a
    complete set of clubs made by Dave for a Christmas present. They
    were very good.

    Good luck with your lessons, he helped me drop 10 shots off my
    handicap in one season. Went from shooting around 100 to 88-90.

233.4Report on the first lessonMSD27::FITZPATRICKSpeaking of non-sequiturs...Tue Mar 29 1988 13:1424
    	Well, I had my first lesson yesterday. Dave is fantastic!
    He not only knows what he's talking about, but he's extremely friendly
    and encouraging as well. Even when he was telling me about some
    major flaws in my swing, he kept stressing the good points,
    complimenting me on the parts I do well.
    	He videotaped my swing, and we went over it from address to
    follow through. I had never watched myself swing a club before,
    and being able to see it made everything that he was telling me
    make sense. I also got to swing a club that he makes. It was a
    Tour Limited perimiter weighted 5 iron. The difference between
    that and my uncle's old "muscle-back" club was just unbelievable.
    I'm definitely buying a new set.
    	Apparently, Dave makes many of the clubs sold at the Wayland
    CC and Stow Acres pro shops. He quoted me a price of $500-$520
    for a set of 3-9 irons, PW, SW, and 1,3 and 5 metal woods, plus
    a putter. This seems to be a bit higher than some of the prices
    I've seen at Nevada Bob's or Herman's, but my feeling is that it's
    worth it since he'll fix any problems for free. He even told me
    that I could buy the clubs, play with them for a while, and if I
    don't like them I can return them.
    	The next lesson is next week. I pick up the clubs then, too.
    I can't wait.

    Thanks for the info about Dave...

    Where does he give lessons this week? What's the price?

    Thanks,

233.6More info on Dave...MSD27::FITZPATRICKSpeaking of non-sequiturs...Tue Mar 29 1988 18:077
    	Dave gives lessons at Stow Acres (he's starting a golf school
    there this year), at Wayland CC, and sometimes at his house in Ashland.
    His phone number is (617)881-5091. You won't be disappointed.

    PS. Dave is not paying me for this advertising 8-).
233.7Better than a headshrinker!AUTHOR::F_MCGOWANFri Apr 01 1988 13:1314
    Good point - Dave is not only a fine technical tutor, his manner
    is like that of an old-fashioned country doctor: warm and encour-
    aging. He doesn't make you feel like a jerk (even while you're both
    watching yourself on video tape, a humbling experience if there
    ever was one). My wife and I have signed up for group lessons with
    him at Wayland starting a week from Monday (they're for beginners,
    but we both feel certain we'll derive a lot of good from going back
    to the fundamentals). His rates are a lot lower than for individual
    lessons, but if you're struggling with a particular problem (like
    an incurable shank), the private lesson is worth every penny, and
    is a lot cheaper than psychoanalysis, which is where you're headed
    if you try to cure yourself (or, worse, ask your golf partner for
    help)!
