191.0. "The Bob Hope Classic" by WORDS::NISKALA (Blinded by the light) Mon Jan 25 1988 15:44

Just looking in todays Boston Globe about the Hope Classic
and I saw an interesting tidbit on Paul Azingers round of yesterday.
Had some trouble with his putter, as he FIVE-putted one green for
a triple bogey, and FOUR-putted another for doube bogey. How can
a guy that make a living doing this, five putt a green? I know it
had to be on helaciously pitched green, but still, a five putt.
I didn't happen to catch any any of the tournament, did they show
this? I don't think I've ever 5 putted yet, knock on wood..

191.1Azinger's PutterTRACTR::OSBORNEMon Jan 25 1988 16:1014
Yes, I happened to see this. He was above the hole about 15-20 feet.
His first putt missed the hole and there was a steep drop off just
past the hole so he rolled down about 15 feet. His second putt did
not make the grade and rolled back down almost to where his first
putt had ended up. His third putt made it over the crest of the
hill but left him 5-10 feet from the hole. he then proceeded to
    two putt from here.
I don't ever recall 5 putting before, but I sure felt sorry for
him. It had to be complete lose of concentration for the last five
holes except for the last hole which he managed to par after placing
his drive up in the rocks and having to use his sandwedge to chip
    out with.

    Stu,
191.2"5" Putt...!MSEE::KELLEYhope to get my game together this yearMon Jan 25 1988 16:1813

Ya, a five putt green...! They did show this, although I did
not see the first putt. His second putt was from X feet away
up a severe slope. The putt did not quite make it to the top
of the slope and came almost back to where he started from.
The next putt (3rd) made it to the top of the slope, but still
3 - 4 feet short. He got down in two from there (frustrating)!!!

After his 4 putt green he was flexing the putter shaft between his
hands, just itching to breeak it...!!!

191.3The Zinger gets zingedDICKNS::F_MCGOWANMon Jan 25 1988 23:4419
Even I have never 5-putted...it was a terrible thing to see; then to put
a 4-putt into the round really added insult to injury...that's 5 extra
strokes on Zinger's total, which meant a much smaller check than the
one he could have taken home. I think he'd have finished no worse than
    3rd if he'd 2-putted those two greens. Didn't he wind up -15?

I was in the Honeywell league a couple of decades ago, and found
myself in a match with a real "needler." I was sporting a 10 handicap
(for 9 holes) in those days, but started off with a pretty nice drive,
to which my opponent reacted by accusing me of being a sandbagger.
Needless to say, my level of play dropped off considerably almost
immediately. What has this got to do with 4- or 5-putting? Well, when
we finally got to the 9th hole (last of the match), my opponent needed
only to 3-putt for a win -- much to my amazed delight, he took 4 putts
to get it down from 20 feet!! After being bugged by this turkey for the
previous 8 holes, I had a very hard time not congratulating him on his
fine putting, but my instinct for survival told me to keep my mouth
shut or risk having a putter wrapped around my ears...

191.4Makes the lose even biggerTRACTR::OSBORNETue Jan 26 1988 14:174
If he had two putted both of those greens he would have won. He
ended up with -17 and in third place all by himself.

Sorry, in all the confusion I forgot that Haas birdied the last
hole so the Zinger would have tied and been in a play-off.

Correct, it was Tway who was third. I looked at the final
placings, and if Azinger had just two putted those 2 holes, he
would have wound up in a tie for 2nd place, I believe.

Five putting is easy! This just proves that anyone can do it.
I can now confess that I also did it once, on a similar type of
green, in a similar manner. It's a humbling experience, and one
you live with forever. Do not be too quick to criticize as your
time may be coming (although I don't wish it on anyone).

Also loved those shots out of the rocks on 18 that the last group
had. Reminds me of my Army days in Fort Huachuca, Arizona. Grass
fairways and rock/cactus roughs. Had to get a new set of clubs
    when I got out.
