114.0. "Golf in Movies" by STKHLM::LITBY (You're away!) Sun May 31 1987 23:06

	 What's your experience on how golf is portrayed in movies? There
	 aren't many movies actually _about_ golf, but the game is certainly
	 mentioned, shown, or discussed in a number of films. Here are two
	 examples:

	 1) ``Caddyshack'' - starring Bill Murphy who is a greenskeeper
            on a posh country club somewhere. He is absolutely rabid
            about moles (isn't that what you call them?) who destroy the
            fairways and greens - he uses all kinds of methods to try to
            kill them, and fails to do anything but ruin the course himself.
	    This film is of the kind which makes golf look like a silly
            game for the rich/lazy/fat/tactless people - it's not even
            funny. It's a terrible movie, but believe it or not I have
            a few golfing friends who _love_ it!

	 2) ``Goldfinger'' - the movie where James Bond takes on the
            villain Goldfinger in a golf match where the stake is a bar of
            gold. Bond uses some dirty tricks to win the match.
	    A good example of a movie which uses golf as an integral part
            of the plot.

	 I can't think of any more right now, but there must certainly be
	 lots of examples. In many cases, golf is probably only mentioned
	 in movies where various shady characters meet in country clubs to
	 do equally shady business...

    The BABE DETRIECHSON (ZAHARIAS) STORY (sp?) was on recently. It
    is a movie about her life including a bout with cancer and her come
    back. Very uplifting and a bit of a tear jerker. Surprisingly,
    the actors' swings are pretty good! I like this movie, and your
    kids can watch it too!
114.2Do Stooges count ?CHAMP2::TLYNCHMon Jun 22 1987 22:584
	How about the Three Stooges assault on a golf course ?
	Certainly one of my favorites. The best scene was
	Curly doing his laudry with the ball washer !
114.3Keep Your Eye On That BallDICKNS::F_MCGOWANTue Jun 23 1987 01:414
    Puleeze!!! The Stooges? Au contraire...the best comedy routine ever
    done involving golf was W.C. Fields's, in which he throws his ball,
    his clubs AND his caddy into the water hazard in frustration!

114.4Jerry Lewis teaching HoganADVAX::CLOSEWed Jul 01 1987 01:1712
    There's a Martin/Lewis movie from about 1954, I think it's called
    The Caddy. Dino is a poor guy trying to make it on the tour. Jerry
    is his caddy. Predictable hi-jinks, and the NY Times would say.
    But there's lots of golf, songs about golf, etc. And one priceless
    scene in which, for some reason, Jerry is up in a tree, out on the
    limb that hangs over a tee. Hogan is teeing off. It's really Hogan.
    Jerry keeps knocking needles down, and bark, and stuff. Ben keeps
    stepping away. Finally, Jerry falls out right in front of him. If
    I remember correctly, he then give Hogan some pointers on his swing!

114.5You missed the best one!VIRGO::MURPHYI want you to kill all the gophers...Tue Oct 27 1987 00:3220
    I can't believe that no one mentioned "Follow the Sun" - the Ben
    Hogan story.

    This film stars Glen Ford as Ben Hogan and was produced, I think,
    in 1954 after Ben had completed his comeback from his near-fatal
    bus accident. It is an inspirational movie that starts out with
    Ben as a penniless rabbit on the tour, driving from tournament to
    tournament, becoming an established pro (The Best Ever) and then
    meeting that Greyhound. The movie details Hogan's death watch, recovery
    and eventual victory over his crippling injuries.

    Some of the best scenes feature Hogan's contemporaries (Snead, Middlecoff,
    Nelson) in golf action with Hogan. (The swing should be recognizable
    - it is actually Hogan wearing a mask and makeup to look like Glen
    Ford making the swings.)

    The one problem is that this is seen every eon or so on those Sundays
    between the Super Bowl and the Pro Bowl (when there is nothing else
    to watch). I have sworn that if it is ever on TV again that I will
    tape it....
114.6BANG ZOOM, ALICE!!!GRANPA::KVENEZIOWed May 04 1988 20:158
    I can't believe no one entered one of the all time greats: Norton
    and Cramden taking golf lessons. Ralph lies to his boss about what
    a great player he is. Of course Ralphy baby has never played a day
    in his life. Who does he solicit for help? Why Norton of course.
    The knickers on Ralph are classic. Don't forget the priceless line
    where Ed shows Ralph how to "address" the ball HELLOOO BALL!

    Has anyone heard of Caddyshack II coming out this summer?
114.7W.C.'s good, but...WFOVX6::MORRISONthe scream of the butterfly.Sat May 07 1988 23:1410

        Another good line from the Stooge's golf episode is the one
    where Moe is hacking his way down the fairway about 3 feet at a
    time. The goundskeeper is screaming that Moe is destroying the
    course. Moe turns to the groundskeeper and says, "I must be getting
    better, the divots are getting smaller."

       Well there were two goofs. _Follow the Sun_ was scheduled to
    be aired last night at Midnight instead of tonight which I listed
    in .8 . Sorry. The second goof was that the Family Channel
    aired another movie instead, _The Gambler From Nachez_ . I'll
    keep a lookout for FTS in the future.
