Well I see that some of you have started. Some of us, on the other hand haven't taken them out of the basement yet. (Mud season in Vt. snow in the mid-west, God knows in Sweden). I was wondering how people get started each year. What sort of preperation/routine do you go through before you go out to play. I usually go to the practice field a few times and review the basics. Grip, stance etc and take half swings with an 8 or 9 iron. Then the same thing with maybe 6 & 7 iron. Then if the putting green isn't under water, take a few putts. Next time out, same thing until it "feels" good then on to 3/4 swings then up to full swing. All this time I try to cover proper grip, alignment and ball placement. I've done this for the past few years and my opening rounds usually end up in the mid to low 80's. After that anything can happen, and usually does! What sort of spring time ritual do you go through KO

I start by rereading Hogan's book. After reading through (sometimes twice) I venture out to the range and apply the renewed knowledge. After a few visits to the range I'll venture out to the course. Somewhat ritualistic but not really. What is ritualistic is that I start talking about golf and my wife starts complaining. One thing you should know is that she can play golf as well and in fact her grand mother played back in the thirties (1930 that is) and her mother plays at least twice a week in the summer. I guess she feels stuck with kids. This year my son (now 6) should be old enough to start playing a little more seriously but will have to see. Maybe that will take care of some of the complaining. Well, it's mud season here too. I expect to have to wait until mid-May before being able to play on a decent course. The pro opens the driving range at the end of April, so I usually go there and hit balls. I start by hitting mid-irons (5,6,7) to get the swing going, then I start hitting woods. After about one week of this, I start hitting approach shots to the flags out on the range. I usually take a lesson or two as well, to stop any bad habits from forming. This practice usually helps me get my game up and running by the time the course opens. -- POL | |||||
