75.0. "GOLF TIPS TO IMPROVE OUR GAMES" by ODIXIE::WESTCL () Sat Feb 28 1987 09:33

WOULD ANY OF YOU LIKE TO TRADE TIPS? IF SO, I WILL ADD MY TWO CENTS
    WORTH.

FOR STARTERS, MOST GREAT PUTTERS PUTT WITH NO BREAKDOWN IN THEIR
WRISTS. THAT IS, THEY MAKE A PENDULUM LIKE MOTION WITH THE PIVOT
POINT AT A SPOT BETWEEN THEIR SHOULDERS. FOR ME, THAT PRINCIPLE
IS BEST ACCOMPLISHED BY SETTING MY HANDS SLIGHTLY AHEAD OF THE BALL,
IMAGINING A LINE GOING ALONG MY SHOULDERS THAT POINTS ALONG THE
INTENDED LINE, AND THEN STARTING THE STROKE WITH THE TIP OF MY LEFT
SHOULDER. OF COURSE, THE ABSENCE OF TENSION DURING THE STROKE IS
    ALL IMPORTANT.

    ANY TAKERS?

75.1Stop SCREAMING, please...STKTSC::LITBY-Is it playable? -No, not yet!Sat Feb 28 1987 15:245
Please don't SCREAM in this notesfile. Mixed case is easier to
read, and it doesn't look as though one is screaming...

75.2The LOBCHAMP::KEVINKevin O'BrienWed Mar 04 1987 01:0019

As most of us know, scoring is done near the greens. I play on
a course with very hard, VERY FAST greens. (We've had exhibitions
by Ken Venturi, Bill Kratzart et al and they say that our greens
are much like the tour greens.) It's also a Donald Ross course
which means that the greens are not flat. So how does one go about
getting it up and down? My favorite shot is called the LOB. It
gets up quickly and lands...... well like a butterfly with sore
feet. The way to play the shot? It's the only golf shot where
you do NOT accelerate through the shot. Line up to the left of
the target. Open the club face (usually a SW) and your stance.
The backswing: pick the club up quickly and long, then "drop" the
club on the ball and restrict the follow through.

When I use this shot I generally have a makeable putt. If you're
not impressed, I can 3 putt from anywhere!!

75.3A GOOD CHIP GOES GREATSAHQ::SJONESMon Jun 26 1989 23:409
I LIKE TO PUT, HOWEVER IT IS HARD FOR ME TO DO. I LLIKE TO CHIP
THE BALL ON THE GREEN. THE BEST WAY TO DO THIS IS TO KEEP YOUR
LEFT ARM STIFF AS YOU SWING THE BALL. DO NOT BREAK YOUR RIST
    AS YOU SWING THRU...

    GOOD CHIPPING...

I have found one item most helpful in the chipping department. I
used to constantly mishit chips. I was thin or fat,ALWAYS. I'm not
a good chipper not however this is due to a lack of practice. I
do now always hit the ball. What I've been doing in the past two
years is concentrating on looking at the back edge of the ball
    throughout the entire chip.

I just read about a good tip to help prevent leaving clubs at the course.
Like when you grab your sw and putter, play the sw ... drop it, pick up
the putter... miss the putt ... get mad... leave quickly without your
sw. I do this a lot!

Anyway , what they say to do is to leave the clubs at the flag
stick. Then when you go to put the flag back you'll see the sw.

I thought this was a great tip the first time I heard it. However
there was the time that everyone in the foursome left for the next
tee 1/2 way there we realized that no one had put the pin back in.
Then there was the time that I put my clubs into some one else's
     bag...

Gee Larry... We better NEVER play together! By the end of the match,
I'll have put all my clubs in your bag, and you put all yours
    	in mine ;) .

    	Hmmmm... (ponder)

    		What clubs do you use?

Heard the one about putting the clubs in the hole and walking off
with the flagsick in your bag??... 8^)

It's hard to hit the sweet spot!!

With some of the new putters available I've seen flags with shorter
	staff!

PS. Walta, I don't think I can hit your clubs, I only do wrist curls
	with a 5 lb. weight!

In reference to the Lob shot. After you've set up to the left and
opened your club face you should remember to keep the ball in the
middle of your stance with your head behind the ball. Then you must
swing along your shoulder line i.e. to the left. Many people still
try to swing at the target and end up hitting it thin and sculling
    it to the right.

    My 2 cents

Remember to keep the hands calm through impact. Keep the back of your
left hand (righties) pointing to the sky.
