Self evaluation: Overrated with a tendency to squeeze the clubs tighter with
the match on the line. Can hit a long ball, but will try to
hit it shorter this year to keep it in the fairway and
                   score better. Yea right.

Closs, do you carry all those clubs in you bag? Because unless
I counted wrong or you don't carry a putter, thats 15 clubs and
the rules clearly say you can carry a maximum of 14 clubs in your
    bag. You listed 10 irons, 1-PW, 2 woods, a driver and 3 wood, 2
    SW's 55 and 60 degree loft. Thats 14 without a putter.

I didn't want to start a new topic just to say this, so I stuck

Comments: These NOTES are compulsive reading - keep it up!!!

The Ayr plant is approximately 10 minutes from Old Prestwick
which was the scene of the first ever Open Championship,
15 minutes from Troon (Tom Watson Open in 1984),
15 minutes from Turnberry (Tom Watson in 1977 and
Greg Norman in 1986), 90 minutes from Gleneagles, 2 hours
from Muirfield, St Andrews and Carnoustie. The area is
really comprised of 3 towns (Ayr, Prestwick and Troon)
which sort of merge into one another to form one large town.
Ayr has 3 courses, Prestwick has 3 courses and Troon, wait
for it, has 6 courses. To sum up, its a pretty good location
to live and work in, apart from the weather which can be
pretty gruesome at times. Golf is a religion round these
parts. The Ayr plant has its own golf club affiliated to the
Scottish Golf Union and now has over 100 members. We have
full use of the local course for our weekly competitions
on Tuesday and Thursday evenings using the tournament tees.

To maintain the friendly theme of these notes, anyone
visiting Scotland for business or pleasure, give me
call and we'll set up a game or three.

Sandy Lyle for the Masters ?????

Ambition: To play more courses in the USA. I've only managed one
round at Stow (don't remember which course - right hand
side coming out of the clubhouse). Shot an 83 with 3 balls
in the pond at the third and using a set of really beat up
                   rented clubs.

Been playing 2 years after resuming after a 15 year layoff. Handicap
is about 20 with an occasional round in the mid-80's. My full swing
is good but my short game in non-existent... sometimes end up further
from the hole than before I hit (is there any way to just take a
    bye?).

Playing with 13 year old PGA Ryder Cup IIs regripped with leather
grips (I like that tacky feeling!). Slotline putter and woods made
by a friend who makes custom clubs. Usually carry 1-3-5 woods,

I grew up in a family that literally lived on a golf course. Actually
my parents just bought land that surrounds the seventh hole at WGC.
Both of my parents play well and my brother is presently trying
to make it onto the tour. It's definitely a tough road!

Played Since: Started in 1970, played on high school team. Picked-up
the clubs again this year after a 6 - 7 year layoff.

Clubs: Royal (circa 1968). I bought them used in 1974. I'm
looking to buy some new clubs before the spring.
               Current Clubs:
Woods: Royal lady's driver and 5 wood. I can hit the
                      woods a long distance...I think it's the
                      whippiness in the lady's shaft.
Irons: Someone once told me that irons should have
grooves...does any one know what they look like.
I haven't seen grooves on my clubs since the
                      mid-seventies.
Putter: Slotline Big Mo, it's new this year. I'm a terrible
putter...although Big Mo has improved my game by
a couple of strokes. I still three putt way too
                        many greens.

Usual Courses: Stow Acres (love it), Heatherhill GC (They're putting in
irrigation this year...they need it), Wayland CC (too short),
Sandy Burr (wide open...good scoring course), Glen Ellen
(wide open), Stowaway (horrible but cheap little course),
Wachusett (real nice course, but doesn't give tee times...long
wait to tee off), Twin Springs (short 9 holer, but in good
shape), Round Hill (Sandwich, Cape Cod...don't go in the
woods...you'll never find your ball; challenging).

Golf Book: Arnold Palmer's "Play Great Golf". It has a very simplistic
approach to how to play better golf. It took 10 strokes off
                my game this year.

     Handicap: Around 16 - 18. I've consistently hit in the mid-to-upper 80's
                since August.

Next Year's Goal: To break 80 (on a regulation-size course)

It was a good year. Most of all, I gained confidence in my game,
even if I screw it up constantly, I know I can hit the ball.

Handicap: Went down to 18 from 26. Not bad for my fourth year playing

Best Score: 87 at Stow Acres South, best 9 holes 40 in same course.
First time to brake 90 in my life

Clubs: Started and ended with my full set of Mizuno Altrons, which
for my type of game I consider good clubs. Only added a Yamaha X-214
driver with good results. I will keep the altrons (with new grips)
for at least 89, but plan to get the Yamaha 3 wood. I went back to
NE Golf Supply in Marlboro but they have already sold the one they
    had (Leftie!!).

61.143slightly updated...VINO::RASPUZZIMichael RaspuzziMon Jan 23 1989 15:0272
Well, I did this once before but it was a couple of years ago. Time
    to update:

    Name:	Michael Raspuzzi
Location:	MRO1, Marlboro, MA (USA :-)) (Soon to be in LKG)
Job:	Software Engineer - TOPS-20 Monitor Group (Soon to be
    in the VMS/LAT Group)

    Now for the real stuff:

I have been playing golf for almost 20 years now (and I am only going
to be 26 this year). My grandfather taught me when I was young.
I played mostly at my home course (Wyantenuck Country Club) and
had the ooportunity to play many courses in Berkshire County (in
    MA).

I played golf on my high school golf team for 4 years and on my
college team for 3 years. WPI was not a big golfing school though.
At one time, my handicap was 2 but I have not played enough in recent
years to keep it there. Someday, it will be back!

This past year, I spent a lot of time practicing and forming a good
mental attitude toward the game. I had a few nine hole rounds around
even par. My birdie production has been failing so I have been
concentrating a lot on making crisp short iron shots to the green
(read close to the hole) and have been practicing my putting from
20 feet in. I firmly believe that any birdie putt from 10 to 20
feet should go in 9 times out of 10 and any birdie putt closer then
10 feet should not be missed. Of course, real life ain't that way...

My best score for 18 is 71 which is 1 over par at Wyantenuck. I
have duplicated said score many times. My best for 9 is 34 (-1 on
the back nine of Wyantenuck) and that has been done only once.

While going to high school and college, I got a job working on the
grounds at Wyantenuck. I worked there for a total of about 8 years.
I enjoyed it thoroughly and should have gotten my degree in turf
grass management. My last 2 years, I was assistant greenskeeper
and my job was to keep the greens and tees looking good and
insect/fungus free. Ah, those were the days...

I always carry 14 clubs in my bag even though I have several extras.
I have 2 drivers; a Sounder and a Taylor Made metal driver. I like
them both but the metal wood seems to let me go for more distance
without hooking the ball wildly. I also carry a 4-wood, Titleist
1-iron and 2-PW Wilson Staffs. I have a Ben Hogan SW (need a new
one) and a Ben Crenshaw style putter. All clubs have a stiff shaft
    (except for maybe the putter).

I usually use Wilson ProStaff golf balls.

I am an avid skier but after March 1st, the skis go in the closet
and the clubs come out. I am not really into match play or 4-ball
tournaments. I like medal play. I also don't really believe in the
handicap system. I understand that every golfer has his or her own
level of play, but give me a stroke play tournament any day with
    no handicap shots.

This year, I am going to have to find a golf course and a driving
range closer to home. Since I work in Marlboro as of this writing,
I have been playing off and on at Marlboro CC and going to the driving
range on route 9 in Westboro. After I move to LKG, I'll have to
find a driving range and a nice course closer to there. I live in
Leominster so if anyone can offer a suggestion on what courses or
driving ranges to go to between Fitchburg and Littleton, let me
    know.

Maybe this year, I'll try to get my competitive edge back by joining
a DEC League. But I am not too crazy about Stow Acres. I played
there a lot in college and I was not impressed.

    Mike

Just a beginner but love the game. Went out about twice a week

in the house with my little indoor wiffle golf balls. Can't wait

Goal: For 1989 I hope to bring my handicap down to 16 and become
a less streaky player. It is very frustrating to play 6 or 7 holes
in a row at 1 or 2 over, then play like.... well you know.

Comments: I have always liked golf, guess watching Arnie on television
in his glory days started me off. I played once or twice a year
for an awfully long time, but never got serious about the game until
a few years ago. My involvment in Little League Baseball for 15
years took up much of my time and once I retired from coaching,
golf filled the void. My regret is that I wish that I taken up the
game on a serious level when I was a teenager.

Should be interesting to see if it's still around in a couple of

I played a couple of seasons of hack golf when I was 12 or 13
I've been playing semi-seriously every weekend for the last
        3 years.

Handicap: I don't have an official handicap, but it would
probably be around 17 or 18.

        Home Course: I'm just a vagrant I guess, don't have a home
course, I tend to play a different course almost
                          every week.

Favorite Courses: Exeter CC in Rhode Island, Portsmouth CC,

                          putter is Ping also.

Favorite Ball: I've been using the Titlelist DT series for

       OBJECTIVE
'cap has stayed even at 5 or 6 in DEC league
and 12 to 13 on USGA for 3 years.
Would like to move into single digits
on USGA and be a STRONG 5 in DEC league.
Not easy for me as I do not have a "natural"
swing. By that I mean it's "unathletic"
as to golf mechanics, and I try to copy
my son, "Walta", "Tom A. in Marlboro
                           league and DICK GARRETT(ex-DECCY).
Not easy, but it is the best of all
                        games, sports or hobby, etc.
    FREINDSHIP
The best reward of all. Nothing else

I have just discovered this notesfile.

    Donal Hickey Programme Manager Galway.
    (soon to leave DEC----Feb 94)

Home Course is Galway GC, 4 holes on the sea, 14 across the Connemara
    road.

Handicap: Apart from my grip.... 14.

    Best Score 78 Galway.

    Favourite Course: Mount Juliet Kilkenny.

    Clubs: Titelist

Most memorable experience: Beat Christy Junior (The Ryder Cup man who
flew the two iron to the green to beat Fred Couples four years ago.
However it was 30 years ago and Christy then had not started golfing.

As I am leaving in a few months, I am investigating some business
concepts. One of these is a Golf Marketing concept over the net
(i.e.Internet public networks) where golfers planning Irish holidays
could reserve tee times in a range of courses.
I will add a note on this and welcome comment.

Well, it finally happened. My husband bought me clubs for Christmas. I used
to play par 3 courses as a kid with my dad. He and my brother have played quite
a bit, and my brother has a handicap in the teens, so I understand the lingo.
Now I get to try it out first hand! I'll be read only for awhile, mostly
looking for places to practice in the winter in Central Mass.

My name is Mark Granoff. In addition to being a new moderator and hosting
this conference (in Littleton, MA), I am a new golfer (just started this
summer). I'm hooked! As such, I don't yet have a favorite course or a
handicap. :-)

Alan Sharkey

I've been playing for about a year now. Have a handicap of 24 and best
score of 89 on a par 71.

Home course is in Norfolk, England but love to play anywhere. So far,
furthest away is Holland and France.
