29.0. "World Amateur Handicap Championship" by PTOVAX::CORRADO (I'd rather be golfing) Sat Aug 09 1986 02:31

Anyone participating in the World Amateur Handicap CHampionship
to be held in Myrtle Beach, Aug 25-28 ?

I played in it last year with a 14 handicap, came in 39th out of 140 in
my flight (13 and 14 handicappers). The tournament was sensational!!
Twelve hundred folks participated from 45 states, 5 Canadian provinces
and 6 foreign countries. PLayed four different courses, different
foursomes each day. It was a shot-gun start format with tee-off at
8:30. You were done by 1:30, leaving plenty of time to go to the beach,
etc. There was an interesting article about the tournament on pg 81
of the July issue of Golf DIgest.

If anyone's going, let me know (name + handicap)

    Tom (sunk to a 16 this year...sandbagger!)

Yep...I went again this year, though at various times throughout
the tournament I wondered why !! It seems that somewhere, sometime
during the 12.5 hr drive from Pittsburgh down to Myrtle Beach, I
developed an uncontrollable hook off the tee !!! I hadn't seen a
hook like that since I saw my kids playing with boomerang toys in
the back yard! At any rate, I shot 103 (started the bloody tournament
    on a par 5 and took a 10!), 92, 89, 88...I'm supposedly a 16 handicap.
I played Sea Trails, Waterway Hills (formerly Arcadian Skyway),
River Club and Quail Creek. Sea Trails and River Club are new (1985)
clubs and are superb. I placed 37th out of 115 in my flight (15-16
    hdcp).

Other than my 103, it was truly an enjoyable experience...that makes
it two years in a row. Met nice people from all over the country
(you're in a different foursome each of the four days) and played
good to excellent courses. This year, some private outfit made a
video tape of the tournament which they showed at the cocktail party
prior to the awards ceremony at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.
You could tell that the Seniors (amateurs over 55) were down there
to have a good time (older gentleman on the video getting into his
    cart.."I just got a 13 !!! How did I get a 13 ?! I missed the putt
for 12."....and off he drives). Us young guys were trying to break
course records and ended up shooting 103's. There were *1600* people
    this year (800 in '84, 1200 in '85).

The entry blanks appear in Golf Digest, almost monthly. It cost
$195 (includes tournament fees, greens fees, cart for all four rounds).
You must have a USGA handicap. I sent in my entry form some time
in June '86...they needed to be in by July 27, '86. What you need
to do *months* in advance is get accomodations down there, especially
if you plan on bringing family down there and want to stay on the
    beach.

    It's a great time....believe me !

    Tom
