TPC-C benchmarks for similarly sized systems have been done, though not
recently. TPC-C is an OLTP benchmark, and does not fully capture all
of the performance characteristics of a given database engine.
May/96, using Oracle Rdb7 V7.0 on OpenVMS V7.1, on an 8400 5/350
with 8 cpus, 14,227 tpmC were audited at a price/perf measurement
of $269/tpmC.
Dec/95, using Oracle7 V7.3 on Digital UNIX V3.2D-1, on 8400 5/350
with 8 cpus, 11,456 tpmC were audited at a price/perf measurement
of $286/tpmC.
Note the timing. In the interval, Informix had published 13646 tpmC
at $277/tpmC on 8400 5/350 (10 cpus), which put substantial competitive
pressure on the first Oracle result and undoubtedly affected the
pricing of the second. Note also that these results are substantially
aged. I don't know the current results, and there may be better
comparisons available for your purposes.
