1114.0. "622mhz upgrade at no penalty?" by WOTVAX::HILTON (Save Water, drink beer) Thu Feb 20 1997 20:14

We received info in the UK about a 'no penalty' upgrade to 622mhz cpus?
How does this work? I want to quote a 8 CPU 622 8400, so do I quote an
8 CPU 440 8400, and then add on the attached special part? If so it has
a price, so where;'s the 'no penalty'?

    Confused of the UK!

The upgrades from 5/440 to 5/622 that were mentioned in a recent sales
update, title "REDUCED PRICING FOR ALPHASERVER 8200/8400 ENTERPRISE"
are no-penalty upgrades. Buy a 5/440 today, and upgrade to 5/622 at
    no penalty.

      * upgrades to faster 5/622 CPUs will be available by summer 97.
      * orders can be placed now with new 5/440 AlphaServer 8x00 systems

1114.1"no penalty", not "622 for price of 440"CERN::HOBBSCongrats to the Ignoble Peace Prize winner! (http://www.eecs.harvard.edu/ig_nobel)Fri Feb 21 1997 05:098
If the price of the 622 system equals the price of the 440 system plus the
622 upgrade, then the customer pays "no penalty" for the convenience of
getting the 440 system today and the upgrade later.

If the 440+upgrade were priced higher than the 622, then there would be
a penalty.

1114.2No penalty phrase/approach is confusingJULIET::HATTRUP_JAJim Hattrup, Santa Clara, CAFri Feb 21 1997 07:4710
Unfortuantely, without a price or part number(s) available for 622
systems, the 'no-penalty' is really confusing or mis-leading.

The noter in .0 is what most (all....) customers will end up asking as
    one explains 'no-penalty'.

It would be much clearer to sell a 622Mhz system, deliver a 440Mhz
system, and upgrade to 622Mhz when available - that would be
no-penalty and easy to understand. I'm sure there is some non-customer
focused reason why we did not do it that way.

Implementing these kind of things at country level, I can speak only
for our own country. This "No Penalty" upgrade is and will be
based on country decisions and implementation.

	In short:

Country is _allowed_ to bid 440to622 upgrade with no penalty to
customers (aka buy 440 now, get 622 at fixed or no cost). Problem
with that program is that even country marketing may decide to
offer this opportunity, country is responsible paying the
cost of upgrade to corporation, meaning that country finances
customer upgrade if this upgrade code will be used. Of course
you can always make customer pay the upgrade, but that's not
	exactly penalty free ;-)

Implementation of this program is country specific, and in most
cases you MUST talk with your local AlphaServer Marketing Mgr
to find out if and how this program can be used in your own
	country.

For example I will accept usage of this "offer" certain limited
critical bids, and pricing model of this upgrade will be decided
case by case. I'm not satisfied with this upgrade program, but
at least it gives us some elasticity on critical cases where
we need it. This can be used in two different ways:

		- give customer fixed price they'll get the 622 system
		- use this as weapon in competitive situations (with care)

	regards,
