1096.0. "DEFPA Error" by IB004::DELGADO (Jorge Delgado @ZQO) Fri Feb 07 1997 08:12

	Hi,

	On an AS8200 with dual 440MHz CPU (V4.1-6), we get the following
	error at power up time:

	Configuring I/O adapters...
	... (omited)
	fwa0.0.0.3.0 pdq_state_k_link_unavail
	DEFPA Error: fwa0.0.0.3.0 can not be started
	DEFPA Error: please check FDDI connection
	... (omited)
	P08>>>

	We replaced the cpu + clock to 300MHz V4.0-4 and the symptom remained
	the same. The only way we got it working was to downgrade the CPU to
	V3.0-9. I meant "downgrade", not "replace" the cpu.

	Is the a bug on the latest console versions??

	Thanks in advance,

	Jordi Delgado.

    Did you check your FDDI connection? Do you have a live wire?

    This message surfaces when there is no heart-beat for the
    FDDI adapter to detect.

"heart-beat"? You're making FDDI sound like Ethernet. :-)

The user should check the LED on the back of the FDDI adapter. If it's
blinking green, then it means that the cable is disconnected, is bad, is not a
proper crossover, or the FDDI port you're attaching to on the other end is off,
or bad.

If the LED is off, then the adapter is not at a link (un)available state which
could be caused by several things.

1096.3same problemSTKAI1::JKJELLBERGMon Feb 10 1997 15:1110
    Hi.
    I got the same problem.
    Two 8400's with two DEFPA-AA in each box.
    Tried difference DEFPA's,new fibercable.
    Console FW from CD V3.8  ( SRM V4.1 )
    I have not tested downgrading FW.
    Any hints ?

Did you notice whether the LED came on in the back? With the SC-type cables,
it's very easy to have the transmit and receive fibers swapped.

    Green LED's are flashing at both ends.
    I reverse the cables in the other end.
    It's a point to point connection,just the fibercables between
    the DEFPA's.

1096.6not likely a cable problem.IB004::DELGADOJorge Delgado @ZQOTue Feb 11 1997 05:408

    Hi,

    It doesn't seem to be a cable problem, for if we downgrade the cpu it
    works fine.

    Jordi.

    re  .6
    I agree,there seems to be something with FW.

    I can't downgrade to lower than 4.04 since I'm using
    5/440 cpu's.
    I tested 4.04 but the result was the same.

    Please,anyone else who can bring some light over this problem.

    Fixed in the V4.8-6 Console firmware version.
    Which will be on the 3.9 AXP CD, due out in March 97.

    Is V4.8-6 avaible on the net ?

1096.10still the same problemSTKAI1::JKJELLBERGMon Feb 17 1997 16:2614
    Hi again.
    Sorry,FW V4.8-6 didn't fix the problem.
    I'm also running V3.10 on the DEFPA's.

    When system initializes it finds fta0 and fta1
    and the error messages are gone but init doesn't even
    try to start up the link with this new FW,( as it did with V4.1-6 )

    Later in the boot the link tries to start,but as before,there is
    this steady flash.

    Please, HELP !!!

1096.11depends of slot #STKAI1::JKJELLBERGWed Feb 26 1997 13:4320
    I have managed to get the defpa's to work.
    It seems that there is some configuration limitations in the DWLPB.
    The defpa's-aa will only work properly in the 4 middle pci-slots.

    I used the fibercable as loopback and the link didn't come up
    if the defpas's were in slot 0-3 and 8-11 !!
    Slots 4-7 were OK !!

    When I tested between the systems I noticed that if defpa's were in
    slot 0-3 or 8-11 in BOTH systems the link was UNAVAIBLE.

    If I put ONE of the defpa in slot 4-7 in one of the systems and the
    other defpa in ANY slot in the other system , link was AVAILABLE.

    any ideas about this ??

1096.12No DEFPA Slot Restrictions in DWLPB!PROXY::SHORTISThu Feb 27 1997 14:357
    There are no DEFPA slot restrictions on the DWLPB. The DWLPA did have
    a restriction that required the DEFPA to be installed in the upper
    4 slots. For some reason you made the system work but not resolved the
    root cause of the problem. Did you try a new DWLPB?

1096.13Two bad DWPLB's ??STKAI1::JKJELLBERGMon Mar 03 1997 11:157

    I don't think swapping DWLPB will fix the problem,
    since symptom are the same in BOTH systems.

    What if the DEFPA is embedded on the KFTIA - which is my case ??
