    	Hi,

I am new to this conference and I am actually here on behalf of
my Uncle. My Uncle is searching for one of the following:

    		54 Ford Convertible

    		67 Mustang

His preference is the Meteor however he said that he would settle

6.16Pig casting number is the clue to pinion diameterMVDS02::READIOA Smith & Wesson beats four aces, Tow trucks beat Chapman LocksWed Sep 18 1991 16:3712
watch out, there are three pinion sizes you'll have to be concerned with. I
don't have the casting numbers handy but the later rears have the largest
pinion shaft diameter. This'll be a real hassle if you find a rear and want to
change the ratio.

What you put it into will have a lot to do with what it comes out of because
spring perch positions will differ as will track width.

A back issue of Hot Rod Mechanix had a blurb on rear ends and dimensions, I'll
try and remember to look it up.

6.17TINCUP::MFORBESThis Space Intentionally Left BlankThu Sep 19 1991 09:475
Thanks Skip. The guy at the chassis shop said to look for a rear end with
a casting number that ends in 489 or 742. The rear end will be narrowed
and will have the mounts welded on for the Vega coil spring set up.

6.19check the vansTROOA::GILESWed Oct 02 1991 23:2613
re: .17 Those are the right numbers. If its a 3.91 you're after, most
Dodge vans came with that ratio (particularly delivery vehicles). The
posi unit itself is interchangeable between those two cases you've
listed but the gears are not.

For narrowing, unless you've already got a good deal lined up, I'd
recommend Greg Moser Eng. in Portland, Ind.. He advertises in Hot Rod,
Car Craft etc.. and did an excellent job on mine - shortened housing AND
    axles for $150. and a 2 day turnaround !!

6.36Wanted! 66 Skylark GS 401..CSLALL::BSKINNERFri Dec 04 1992 16:0921
    WANTED: 1966 BUICK SKYLARK G.S. 401

Whole car or here's a list of what I need..

    - Brackets and pulleys for 401 with A/C setup and PS bracket
    - Radiator
    - Exhaust manifolds (must be for 65-66 skylark w/401)
    - Drive shaft
    - Motor mounts (have adapter plates).
    - 66 GS Hood and Emblems (would be nice..)

This is all I need to get my 66 Skylark (GS?) back on the road. I
finished the 64 401 Wildcat motor which will be placing my 340. The
motor has been bored 30 over with all new stock parts and is ready to
go. I hope the 64 Wildcat tranny is the same one used in the 66 Skylark
GS. Its tuff to find one around to copy.

I have one in my 79 Camaro. I bought it new/used (someone bought one
and never installed it) I paid $1200. for it serveral years ago.

Not exactly bolt in. (needed to move the crossmember) but not too
    difficult.

I originally purchased a Hurst shifter for the transmission that came
though the factory hole in the floor. I later switched to a Long
vertigate shifter (inline pattern) that does NOT come though the
factory hole. Some cutting was needed.

I reccomend this transmission. It gives the best of both worlds.

6.55Bumper straightening?LEDS::STEVENSBarney?Fri Feb 26 1993 13:0915
This is just a general question regarding plating and maybe doesn't
belong here. I'm wondering if the rear bumper on my '55 is worth
replating. It's a three piece job with little or no surface rust.
The problem is that the center section has got a couple of dings in
it and is a bit wrinkled, for lack of a better term. It's probably
a total of about 1/8" in terms of variation from straight.

I'm wondering if straightening/filling is an option and whether or
not it's cost effective or should I just purchase a rechromed unit
from somebody else? I've never looked into replating and don't know
    much about it.

Thanks in advance for any help,

    John,

You're probably talking about Astro Bumper. I had a bumper from my
71 Monte Carlo done there once and wasn't happy. I didn't get back
the same one I sent. Mine had no damage and the one I got back
had major repair work done to it. The chrome was just a production
job that looked okay, nothing special. I refused the bumper and ended
up buying a new one from GM (when they were available) for $25 more
than the cost of the rechrome.

    Mark,
Are you serious? One whack on the roll bar and a helmet is junk.
Even if it doesn't show any outside damage. If you don't get the
helmet tested, the only time you'll find out if it's ok is when you
    really need it.

Like they say, if you have a $50 head, buy a fifty dollar helmet.

I guess my point for Steve is, or what I would ask would be:

Who sells NEW helmets in my area at a resonable price?

A dealer who sells new: would be a good choice.
A friend (or noter) who has a helmet who you can TRUST: would be ok.

All else... don't jepordize yourself. If you actually need a snell
85 or 90 rated brainbucket, don't be afraid to spend the money.

Personally I would (and did) go to a volume dealer of Motorcycles.
I got my openfaced helmet for $150 (not that my heads worth that
much :^)) My previous helmet I had was used up at Riverside Mass, where
I turned my helmet (and my car) into junk.

I bought a Snell 90 (in XL size) last summer at a local motorcycle place for $95, plus tax.

Any helmet is better than nothing, but the Snell rating is earned through some extraordinarily tough testing. The
Snell Foundation was formed due a racer getting killed due to a low quality, poorly constructed helmet.

Thanks for all the discussion, and your points are all well taken. The
reason I was looking in here, as well as asking around with friends, is
that I felt I'd trust someone here if they told me the helmet had never
been in an accident, rather than go thru the Want Advertiser, etc.

The rule change in NHRA this year says all 14.99 or quicker cars have
to have Snell 85 or better. I had been running my old (from back in
'63 in Sanford) Snell 60 "shorty". So.....that was a good reason to
get a new helmet, which I had been thinking about anyway.

I just didn't want to get into $$$$, as it's kind of tight this year.
The deal Bruce (I think) got on a Snell 90 of $90 was real good, but I
    haven't seen any Snell M90, never mind SA90, for under $130-35 +
    shipping.

If anyone knows of any place specific for new helmets under
$100, or a "virgin" used one, I'd still appreciate it.

The Hertz/Shelby Mustang Gt was produced in only one color....black

and you had to take a drivers test with the Hertz agent before they
would let you have it. I was only 20 at the time so there was NWIH that
they would let me rent one.

There are stories of Hertz Shelbys that were weekend-raced and returned with
holes in the floors from bolted-in rollbars. I hardly imagined that Hertz
supported this use.

Some of the stories included returning the Hertzmobile with a barely running
half-blown engine and one case where they left the race tools in the back of
the Shelby - Hertz called the renter and said 'Hey, you left some tools in the
trunk' - which the owner meekly retrieved.

$25/day and .25/mile at the time - they weren't cheap to rent as rental cars
go. I think only 400 Hertz Shelbys were produced, and it takes 35K+ or so to
get one. In Hemmings Motor News last year, someone was selling a "complete"
Hertz-in-a-basket for 20K. You assemble yourself.

This months Classic Auto Restorer has an article on the early Shelby's
that mentions the Hertz cars. According to the article there were 1000
GT-350H cars built, and most were automatics. There were reports of
some having been returned with burn marks where the roll bar was welded
in for the weekend, and some had the engine pulled and put in another
car for a race, and then returned to the GT and brought back to Hertz.
                                                             John M.

Not all '66 GT350(H)'s were Black & Gold. They were also available
with Red & Gold, and I thought there was another combination, but I'm
    not positive.

A Shelby as a commuter, interesting. I would be very careful to
leave that car anywhere on a regular schedule :*((.

There was a '68 (??) GT500 advertised in the Want Ad last week. I
think it was in the Special Interest section but may have been Antique
or Ford passenger. Almost too cheap to believe it was an original
    GT500. Car was in Mass.
Also saw a Boss 302 in there at a very reasonable price.

GT-350H's came in a number of colors, including red, black, white, and
green. Perhaps there were more. To the author of this string, I would
urge you to do proper homework on this topic. Any Shelby purchase will
be an expensive proposition, and the likelihood of getting burned in a
*serious* way is a strong possibility. Shelby Mustangs are a game of
numbers. You *MUST* know what to look for to ensure the car you buy is
genuine, and possessing the proper Shelby bits. Cars missing these
bits are worth considerably less than a proper vehicle. May I humbly
suggest buying a more pedestrian Mustang and then dolling it up to look
like a Shelby? Probably the safer route - particularly for a daily
    driver.

If you are bent on the Shelby, contact the Shelby American Club
(located in Sharon, CT.) and get all the information possible.

    Its important.

Make sure to check the tag ID's, and the Engine Code. many fakes
out there, or solid originals with either the wrong color paint or
    wrong engine.

a friend of mine bought a beatiful documented Shelby 350 , only thing
is that I noticed that his Beatiful RED car should actually be a
     beautiful LIME green car.

many Lime green shelby's were painted over RED because it looks nicer
and is a definate eye catcher.

     Hi,

I am looking for a Gas filler tube for a 1972 Dodge Dart. The current
one is extremely religious and is dumping a third of the gas I put
down it onto the ground. I've tried (more) than a few junkyards and have
not been able to find one.

If anyone has any suggestions or just happens to have one lying around
     I'd appreciate any help.

Mail can be sent to MKOTS2::SCHROEDER as I don't note too often.
I will (try) to keep a regular check on this topic but mail would be
     great.
