81.0. "How loud is too loud?" by CUJO::BROWN (Dave Brown) Thu Jan 09 1992 14:52

Another topic applicable to my new Rod. Currently it is a bit loud
and I am wondering how the Police or whoever in everybody's area set
criteria for a car that is "too loud". Is there an absolute db at a
certain distance which must not be exceeded? Is it by complaint only?

    	How does it typically work?

    Dave,

I don't know how it is out there but here in N.H. there is definitely a
double standard, 1 for motorcycles and 1 for cars/trucks. I have yet
to see the police pull over someone on a motorcycle for a loud exhaust
and some of the ones I've heard far exceed the noise from any of
my cars. But both my brother and myself have been pulled over for loud
auto exhaust although no ticket was written since without something to
measure the db level it's judgemental.. I don't have anything against
motorcycles but if they're going to enforce noise laws it better be
done equitably, otherwise I'll go to court to fight any ticket for
    noise that I receive.

Here in Colorado Springs, they generally won't bother you much. If they think
that it is too loud though, they can and will check it. They have a db standard
and a noise enforcement unit that has a db meter.

Put a cross-over/equalizer pipe on it and you'll be suprised at how
much quieter it gets, AND you'll have better low-end torque to boot!

Colorado Springs has set the levels at:

	Cars: 80db @ 100'
	Trucks: 88db @ 100'
	Concords: 120db @ 100'

Don't ask me how I know!!!!!!!!!!

i find the smaller the truck the quicker they will pull you over
reffering to my nissan 4x4 with a straight pipe.although not as loud
as the neighbors chevy guess gets pulled over.
