91.1Augastines car show.ESKIMO::MANUELEMon Jun 08 1992 02:3026
I figured I would start this off as I wanted to talk about a cruise
spot that may interest some local noters. At Augastines Restuarant on
Rt.1 north in Saugas (Ma.) every Wed. night during summer is a very
good carshow. The show runs from 5:00pm to around 8:00pm and usually
has a couple hundred cars show up. Cars must be pre 1975, and most are
60-70 era musclecars, although there are usually quite a few classic
50's and older. It costs 1$ to walk in, 3$ to enter your car, and the
money goes to trophy's for various classes (this weeks best-of-show was
a Beautiful 70 GTO Judge convertible) The cars are in various states of
repair, from new looking to beat up, but under restoration. Some of the
more interesting cars (besides the usual bunch of Camaro's and
    Chevelles :^) ) were a 63 Galaxy with a dual quad 427 in mint
    condition, a 440 Six-Pack 'Cuda, several nice Roadrunners, a 383 and a
440 Commando, and some real nice Mustangs, including a 69 GT (fairly
rare). Tom Fisher would be interested in the fact that there were at
    least 4 Cougars, including a 69 428 XR-7 (boy, is that engine
compartment tight!) The best thing about the show is that all the cars
are drivers, no trailer queens. I was a little disapointed to find not
a single Torino there, in fact the only mid sized Ford at all was a 66
Fairlane GTA 390 in fair condition, needed paint. I guess the Torino is
    more rare than I thought.
Anyway, the show is well worth the trip, for me its only 5 minutes up
RT 1 so I plan to be there most weeks, hopefully by the end of summer I
    may have a car entered.
                                                        John M.

There used to be a great car show each summer at Crotched Mountain
Rehab Center, easily 2000 plus cars. Was that show cancelled or moved
to a new location? Anybody have any info???
What about any cruise nites in the central NH locale?

A Friday night cruise night show is located in the Burger King

25-50 cars with plenty of room for more. No fees that I know of.

Starting this Friday and running til Sept 11th, Cruise Night at the

times last year when it was on Sat. Pretty good time.

Nick's Ice Cream in Natick, Mass.

From route 9 west OR east, take the route 27 exit and head south
on 27 to route 135 (Natick center) go left (east) on 135 for about
3/4 mile. Nick's is on the right.

    A few words;

Parking is tight, so get there early if you want a good space in the
lot. Conversely, if you come early in the family car, Please, Please,
oh Please don't park it in Nick's lot - use the bank lot next door or
the Armory lot behind Nicks. The regulars get pretty bummed when they
bring the Hemi Cuda but can't park because someone's taking up space
    with the Ford Escort!

Also, be a Squid at your own risk - Burnouts *WILL* get you busted by
    the Natick P.D.

All in all its a good laid back scene with the entire spectrum -
concours musclecars, restifications, Pro-streets, lead sleds, rods,
and special interest late models (GNX's, ZR-1's, etc.)

Well, that's enough to make a bunch of us avoid it like the plague. After
all, who wants to spend an evening listening to the gold-chain crowd bitch
about someone else's car winning a trophy.

91.10Nothings free in the PRM, especially in greater Boston.ESKIMO::MANUELEThu Jun 11 1992 05:3011
Skip, I tend to agree. I was surprised last year when they started to
charge for admission. I asked an official about it last night and he
explained it for me. It seems the club that orginizes it is being
charged by the Town of Saugas for 1 donut muncher at the show and
another with his cruiser, to sit at the parking lot entrance to stop
speeding/smokeshows etc. They figured as long as they had to charge
they might as well use some of the money for prizes. He said they do
try to make the awards fair, whatever that means. At any rate its
    better than nothing.

    John,

I had heard a lot of favorable reviews of the Augustine's cruise,
yet the 1 and only time I went (last year) was a let down. There
was NO parking - and the quality of the cars was only fair. Perhaps
I hit it on a down week...... I don't live far from there, perhaps
we can meet next week. Interested?

I went by a cruise last night on Brown Ave in Manchester NH (on the road
from the airport to RT101/293). It was at a gas station I think...I
just caught a quick look at some nice rods as I went by.

I'll have to adjust my travel schedule so's I can stop in and check it
out...then if I do it right I should be able to make a caouple of runs
at NED on the way home too!

91.13Better at the beginning of Summer.ESKIMO::MANUELEFri Jun 12 1992 07:179
    re.11
As far as parking at Augustines is concerned, if you do not get there
by 6:00, it is hard to find a spot. I usually park at the Diamond Head,
a Chinese place a few buildings down. The show tends to lose quality by
the late part of the summer, people probably get tired of bringing cars
down, but right now it seems pretty good.
Tom, I sent a mail message, next Wed. looks good.

Just came back from the ADIRONDACK NATIONALS Hot Rods and Kustoms

was simply amazing seeing Traffic Jams, Cars lined up in 3 lanes on

The cop findly let him go part it. Apparently it was a real hoot to see
the burn out and the cops just standing by....

btw Ron's 34 Chevy coupe is an Outlaw glass body. It had a custom frame
with a corvette front and a narrowed 9" Ford rear. I finished building
the frame and mated it to the body in my shop. The 21"wide tires are
real impressive from the back. The green/black color was squirted by

It was Saturday at 5:30 P.M. when the Police Blocked OFF the Main

at the 4 (four) traffic detours, however at about 8 p.m. sat. night
the Officers Finally did let SOME people thru to their Hotels Only,
but this was before the Cars in Line began to PEEL/Spin the rear
tires and create a Gigantic SMOKE Display !!!

After repeated Smoke Displays NO ONE was allowed down Canada

Walk to their Hotels, I know that Fort henry was a good 2 miles
From one of the Road Bloacks. Lucky for me I was at the BALMORAL

You got that right!

I just got off the phone with one of the organizers. A street rod club
organizes the event, the late model dunderheads get the crowd all riled up
and the press has a field day with the street rodders calling them a bunch
of trouble-makers.

If there's another way to go, most street rodders will take that route and
stay away from the immature shenanigans on the main drag.

Some jerk in a Caddy was going at it with a late model Vette. The sheriffs
were tearing their hair out and the street rodders who put the thing on
couldn't get to their motel rooms.

Cities where crowd control is a science don't have this kind of trouble.
They just bring out one of the police helicopters, a van (paddy wagon) or
two and walk down the row of drunken spectators with a couple of German
shepards. Occasionally, they'll open a fire hydrant or two and make the
street someplace that the clean car crowd tries to avoid. That works
quite well in St Paul every time the nationals are up there.

At our event (the following day) we instructed the police to ticket, and
arrest, if necessary, anyone inciting the crowd when they left. We don't
let the hoons get things out of hand. We had 800 pre-1967 cars leaving
one place all at the same time (after the door prize entrant number for the
454 was drawn at 8:45).

We pay police to keep the peace inside the event (the Elks sell the beer
and they made a LOT of money that night) and we give the cops a free hand
out in the street. Year after year we have a hassle-free event because the
participants KNOW we won't stand for any crap.

There are a lot of liquored-up folks around but they behave when you put
your foot down on the kids with lots of money for tires and gas but no
brain matter between their ears.

Oh, and by the way, having a bunch of hoons yell at you to burn rubber
isn't a sign that you have a hot car. Hell, they yell that to me and I'm
driving a 5,000 lb 18+foot long flathead six powered land barge. I think
even Dick Waite got the same treatment in his AC. Of course THAT car looks
a bit faster than mine :-)

Back in 80-81, Car Craft magazine visited Brockton, MA as part
of their "Cruising USA" series. After a long winter of cabin fever,
the yahoos showed up en masse. The scene soon turned into a near
riot. A few stores were looted and I think a guy got stabbed
before the cops regained control. The magazine, while impressed
with the cars, severely denounced the behavior, and soon after
dropped that column from the magazine.

With that exception, I have never seen that type of behavior at
    any cruise night.

I just found out that the World of Wheels custom/musclecar show is
going to be in Boston January 8, 9, and 10. As usual its at the Bayside
Expo Center, and as usual its the pits to get there. But the show is
worth it, especially in the cold dreary, days of winter.
                                                               John M.

91.53Forget Cruise nights, what about cruising?GVA02::FISHERThu Jan 14 1993 04:0024

Growing up in the greater Boston area, there always seemed to be great
strips for cruising. Moody st. Waltham usually was pretty good, the
strip bounded by Burger King on the Newton/Waltham line, and the green
at Moody, Carter, and Main sts. On any given summer night you'd see
some good cars (I remember Mark Hamel's Torino, before he got Chevy
powered) and could usually find some decent street racing.

Occasionally we'd head out to Revere Beach and cruise that strip,
though MDC cops effectively shut down much of the shenanigans.

A fellow Deccie who grew up in the era of 409's/421 SD's/406 Fords told
me Cambridge,Mass had a good scene out by Fresh Pond Circle.

What I'd like to know is, besides the regular cruise night events, are
there any strips still active? For you "higher mileage" folks, what used
to be the scene when you were younger?

Not necessarily interested in Boston, but nationwide since I travel

Anyone out there know any details about the car show in boston this
weekend? Is it new cars or older classics/musclecars? I heard it
mentioned on the radio this morning.. think they said the Bay State
Expo center.. this weekend. Auto Palace is a sponsor.

Anyone know the cost,... the times... what kind of vehicles will be
    on display?

The Budweiser World of Wheels is at the Bayside this weekend, Fri. from
5-10pm, Saturday from around 1-10pm and Sunday the same. These are from
last year, but the should be close. The cost is $8.00, but you can save
a buck by buying the tickets at Auto Palace. The show is Classic,
Musclecar and Customs/Rods. It's usually a pretty good take, especially
this time of year. The best time to go is afternoon, as it usually gets
pretty crowded after 5:00. I'll be there Saturday FWIW.
                                                                  John M.

91.85Best Western- Fitchburg MAIAGO::PROVENCALMon May 02 1994 11:1212
Just got a flyer at Victory Auto in Fitchburg yesterday. Evidentally
the Best Western Royal Plaza in Fitchburg (right off route 2) is going to
have cruisin nights every Friday night starting May 13th! 5-10:00 pm,
supposed to have a DJ, and rolling bar...

Also supposed to have a 3 or 4 day fall nationals in September.

Wonder if the Sheraton is still going to have cruisin? ANd if so, will
they still be on Fridays. Seems kind of dumb to have 2 of them so close
together on the same nights.

Oh well...

Well,

Took a ride up to the Fitchburg Best Western Friday night. Started off
kind of small.. but the time I left 8:00ish (had the little ones with me)
there were quite a few cars. Still think the Sheraton was better. Had a
better barbecue set-up, waitresses walking around selling drinks, and the
DJ set-up was better. But.. with nothing else to do on a nice warm
Friday night.. it was worth the trip. Then again.. they're just starting
off.. so maybe it'll get better through the summer.

I had a little surprise last week. I went to the cruise night at
Augastines Restuarant in Saugas, and no one was there. Seems they moved
from last year. I saw a few rods go by, so I fell in behind them to see
if there was another cruise nearby. Sure enough, they pulled into the
Costco Warehouse parking lot on RT 1 north in Danvers. Here I found out
that this was not the original cruise group, they still meet on Wed,
but at Sam's Club on RT 1 north in Saugas. The Costco group had around
75 cars, of all types and is free. They had food and drinks available,
with all proceeds going to the Danvers DARE program. The Sam's group
still charges $1.00/ person and $3.00/car and has music playing, but no
food. They also limit cars to 20 years old or older. Costco was good,
but I may check out Sam's first next time.

Hi,

Just thought I'd put a note in here to let everyone know that the
Sheraton Leominster will be having a cruise night this Friday July 1st.
Should be a good crowd! I think they're supposed to have a live
band too.
91.91My 2 cents..MYCUDA::COE440 Rotates the EarthMon Jun 27 1994 10:398
I think every one should boycott them.. After all, they chose not to
continue Friday Cruise nights because they had other activities that
made the cruise not possible. Best Western reluctantly took it over,
and is doing a good job. The people at Best Western were unaware that
the Sheraton was going to have a cruise on the 1st..

They CHARGE you to get in?????????????? Next thing you know they'll be
giving out trophies!!!!!! Where do you park your trailer and tow vehicle?
Do they charge for parking there, too?

I guess I'll go elsewhere. Maybe Kimballs, or Ericksons for some ice cream
. Maybe I could cruise up to a state park and go swimming. Isn't that
what you're supposed to do? ...DRIVE the car?

91.93If you charge, someone will pay.STRATA::MANUELEMon Jun 27 1994 17:459
I have heard that one of the reasons the cruise is no longer at
Augastines is that one of the sponsers was pocketing 90% of the
proceeds for "administrative" costs and donating 10% to charity. I
agree with you Skip, I prefer drivers over trailer queens, but as long
as someone pays, someone else will charge admission. And they DO give
out triphies at the cruise, but it seems the same cars win quite
    frequently.

What is the NESN?

I remember the Sheraton had a special crusin night last year on the
4th of July weekend with a band, clowns, etc. So I just assumed they
were doing the same thing this year. In fact, it was listed in the
list of activities for Fitchburg Civic days which is occurring over
Fri/Sat/Sun/Mon of the long weekend.

91.103SUPER CHEVY SHOW, NE DragwaySPEZKO::TAYLORFri Mar 31 1995 13:3221
The SUPER CHEVY SHOW is scheduled for May 27 and 28 at New England
Dragway in Epping, N.H. This show, if you are not familar with it,
is a "serious" car show put on by Super Chevy Magazine and
B.F.Goodrich. These shows are held all over the USA with this being
the 3rd year for the Epping event. Pick up a Super Chevy Magazine
at your local magazine store and they always have several pages
of pictures and "side bars" covering past shows.
Whether you show your car or go to look and watch the drag racing
    it is a fun event.
Last year it cost $40 to SHOW your car. ( I said it is a serious show.)
They also had "fun show" parking area where the cars were not judged
and cost was the same as the gate fee ( $10 ) to enter the raceway, but you
got to park in a nice area verses just being another car in the dusty
    parking lot.
Sunday is the best day to go. More cars and better drag racing. But
if Saturday is the only day you can go, it is worth it...

I plan to go again this year!!!

Does anyone know the schedule for the New England Summer
Nationals this year? I know they are scheduled for this week,
but I am interested in when the cruise is, what nights the
    flamethrower contest is, etc.

    Thanks,
    Rich

I believe it's Saturday night for the Tunnel action stuff....in
    Woosta.

and the flamethrowers...well, it missed it, the two guys in the next
cubicle over here in HLO have been blowing Enormous flames for the last
hour or so.....if I only came prepared, I would perhaps enjoyed it much
    more !!! :_)
