2840.0. "Can Cubase print to disk????" by HLFS00::WETERINGH_B (Music was my first love...) Mon Feb 10 1992 20:32

Question:

I write a lot of music (for a choir, a musical and a semi-proffesional
singer). I use Cubase 2.0 and a couple of synths to do that. And then
I always need to print it out cause people need their sheet music.
So I have this tiny Star LC10 on my desk.

But with a modem and a connection to Dec-computers, Does anyone know
of a way in which I can make print-outs on, say, an LN03, LN06, LPS20
or LPS40? I was thinking of for example redirecting the printerport
to my floppy, then upload it to Dec, and print it out in...
what is it? Sixel or Regis? Is it sixel or Regis? Are there other
ways to do it?

I could off course print it out to the serial port of my Atari which has
the modem hooked up, but Kermit is never gonna accept it without
checksums or CRC's.

I hope one of you out there ever figured it out. Then I could
print it out quietly at night, in stead of feeding my printer
another piece of paper every 20 minutes (and do that 30 times....
that is 30 pages times 20 minutes = 10 hours :( )

Is there anyone with more creativity than me?

Thnks a bundle in advance!

    One thought pops into mind - if you don't mind paying for hours of
    connect time, you could log into a convenient VAX and do a:

    $ create somefile.ps

    and then connect your Atari printer port up to the modem and feed the
    Postscript up to the VAX. When you're finished "printing" (how can you
    tell?), connect the modem back to your terminal (or whatever) and issue
    a control-Z. At this point, the file named somefile.ps on the VAX
    contains all of the Postscript generated by your program, as well as
    whatever line noise managed to creep in.

2840.2Why don't you cross post this question?TANNAY::BETTELSCheryl, Eur. Ext. Res. Prg., DTN 821-4022Tue Feb 11 1992 07:057
I suggest you cross post this to the Atari notes file. I'm sure that someone
there has a converter that will allow you to create a file which you can kermit
over to a VAX for printing.

Press Select or KP7 to....

2840.3You're on the right "track"ATIS01::ASHFORTHTue Feb 11 1992 12:1621
Re .0:

You've got the right idea.

Capturing to disk and then uploading is infinitely more efficient than "printing"
to the "created" VAX file- although that *is* a great fallback for "uploading"
text when you just don't have access to compatible transfer protocols!

If Cubase speaks PostScript and you have access to a PostScript printer (e.g.,
LN03R, LPS40), you're all set; capture, upload, print.

If not, you need a bitmap translation program (either on VAX or Atari) which
will translate the format understood by your Star to either Sixel or Regis.
(The former for an LN03, the latter for an LJ250.) Since the Star almost
definitely has a resolution of at most 150 DPI, this would produce output which
would be greatly inferior to that of PostScript, which always utilizes the
highest available resolution of the final output device.

Hope this helps.

    Please continue this discussion in note 2762, there are already half
    a dozen or so Cubase notes.
