Gang,

Well, I sprang for a copy of MIX's 1991 Recording Industry Sourcebook. One
thing that surprises me is that Disc Makers/AVL is not listed! This is a
surprise because I know that some folks here do business with them. They
are one of those outfits that does soup to nuts as far as doing album
production. Anyway, it consists of glossy adds and addresses with a few
scant notes under each reference, usually just enough to tell you who and
how to contact them with sometimes other info. The categories are pretty
comprehensive. It is basically broken into:

Major & Independent Labels, Record Distributors
	Management, Attorneys, Agencies, Publishing
	Promotion, Marketing, Publicity, Media
	Recording Studios, Mastering, Producers, Engineers
Equipment, Duplication, Record & CD Manuf., Blank Tape
Clubs, Rehearsal, Transport, Sound & Lights, Concert Promo
Music Video, Audio & Video Post Prod., Music Production
Sound Stages, Music Libraries & Programmers
	Photographers, Designers, Associations, Schools, Instruction
	Trade Shows, Travel Services

I have the feeling that this is a mix of references, some sought after, some
paid for by the service folks. Unlike "Writer's Market" or "Songwriter's
Market" there is very little to nothing in the way of any useful information
about how to make contact or what to do with the info. Instead, there's
lots of hype about musician-ish issues (feedom of expression, and ACLU ad,
save the whales, save trees, that kind of thing) and glossy pictures of big
names when they were starting out. Yeah, really inspiring ... (yawn)

There is good info here. If anybody wants to know anything in specific or
if there are items and contacts of particular interest, let me know or post
the request here. No need for anyone else to have to spring the $50. BTW,
you may find that your library has an old version of this, but it's not the
same. Marlboro library has such a version, but it's thin. This thing is
thick (over 500 pages). About 25% of it is ads, but there really is a lot of
info. Can't believe that Disc Makers isn't listed. I suppose that those who
give money to musicians were put in for free and those who take money from
musicians had to pay.

There is also a disk version available for the IBM PC. Written in
Clipper, you can easily search and even print out mailing labels.

BTW, I found that Disc Makers IS listed in a couple of places. They're
just not listed with the folks that do discs only. They seem to be the
cheapest, but I dunno about how well they are managed. Check with Karl
for a developing horror story. I won't do an album with them unless
    Karl gets satisfaction ...
