2634.0. "Custom Cassette Labels (the stick-on type)" by STOHUB::TRIGG::EATON (In tents) Mon May 06 1991 17:57

Has anyone come across software that will create custom cassette
cartridge label (the kind you adhere to the cassette itself)? I'm interested in
this for either a PC, an ST or even a C64.

If not, have any of you done anything special to dress up your cassette
copies? Special graphics?

2634.1I wrote some simple code for thatPRNSYS::LOMICKAJJeffrey A. LomickaMon May 06 1991 18:2012
I have a program I wrote for the ST that drives my Toshiba printer that
will allow you to manually enter three lines of info above the spindle,
some short lines on either side of the spindles, and two lines below
it. When you hit OK, it prints one pin-feed label, and you get to
start again. I think the first line is always bold, the second italic,
and the third is normal, or something like that. Escape sequences are
hard coded for the Toshiba, also easly changed or removed. Send me mail
if you are interested. Also tell me what kind of printer you are using.

On a related note - I have recently upgraded from the Toshiba to an HP
laser printer. Does anybody know where to get laser printable casette
labels? My supplier of pin-feed casette labeles doesn't have any.

If variety is your spice check out the tixel::ibmpc_shareware note. There are
many programs available to label cassettes using a PC.

2634.3can it do graphics?STOHUB::TRIGG::EATONIn tentsTue May 07 1991 11:1711
Thanks for replying. I haven't bought the printer yet (haven't bought
the computer yet, either!) but have been thinking about getting the
Panasonic KX-1123 (I think that's what its called). Originally I was
going to get the Canon Bubble Jet printer for its near laser quality,
but I have been concerned about claims that it doesn't work well on
    some papers.

What I'm really hoping to find is a program that will allow me to
print out, along with the text, my studio's graphic logo.

Actually, I have looked through the list of shareware stuff... Are
you familiar with any of the programs there? I got the impression that
these programs were for cassette inserts, not the sticky label. Do you
know if any of them can include graphics?

DAN, Look at an office products catalog. AVERY puts out cassette
labels. I just took a look at our catalog here in the office and
the ones there were not tractor fed.

Historically I've used Avery 8.5x11 labels - 15 labels per sheet.
Recently I helped a friend with his cassette cover and labels.
What I did was use (ahem) an MD300 to scan in a blank label form,
giving faint lines at the label borders. Then, using DECwrite, I
pulled in this form and created a text block for one label's A&B side.
Also included a scanned - in logo. then copied the completed labels to
the remaining labels. Erased the underlying label outline (severed
the link), saved the file, printed it on a Postscript printer, and used
it as a master for copying onto the Avery labels.

2634.10Source for fan-fold pin-feed casette labelsPRNSYS::LOMICKAJJeffrey A. LomickaThu May 09 1991 16:5213
The Tape Store (508) 256-1939, fan-fold casette labels $21.50 per
thousand. Phone/mail orders only.

They usually deal with churches, so sound religous when you call them.
Their primary business is that they wind their own casettes to custom
lengths, and sell them is bulk to churches that use them to distribute
copies of sermons and church music to their congregations. The label
business is there to support the tape business.

Mechanically, their tapes are better than other bulk voice-quality tape
suppliers I've used, and the prices are almost as good as the national
discounters. (The cheaper ones would sometimes auto-stop the tape
machine in the middle of a recording.)

	RE "The Tape Store"

I just called them about an hour ago... Good deals, so it seems. I
ordered 25 10-min. chrome (BASF) tapes for $.85 each. 1K labels were as
reported. It was a lady, by the way... They are running the business out of
their home now. I'll be getting a full price list with my order.

Thanks for the lead! The only other price I had gotten on labels (just
today, actually) locally was about 4 times their price!

Dan (who must've sounded religious by default)

TOOLSHED used to have a piece of VAX software that would create casette
labels for you based on a simple parameter file. The output is standard
    PostScript file.

well, they go thru a copier without jamming it. Dunno about your
favorite laser printer. I'd make one laser master and then use a copy
    machine..

2634.16Summit Studio takes on a new lookSTOHUB::TRIGG::EATONIn tentsMon Jun 17 1991 15:1112
I got my printer last Thursday and set out over the weekend to print my first
cassette labels using LABELS UNLIMITED on my AT. The results were wonderfull.
I was able to import my studio logo, Add title, contents, copyright notice, and
even put my studio address on the bottom. It took a bit of patience to align
the labels, though, as the hole in the center takes quite a chunk of printing
space away. I also had a bit of smudge problems, but I think that was just
becuase I had the ribbon in wrong.

Overall, I'm more than pleased. It gives so much more of a professional look to
the project.

I find that a tractor feed 3 1/2 inch label works quite well. Anything
bigger than 3/4 of an inch is too large. This sort of label is available
at many places.

I've been using Ventura Publisher to create the inserts for my Cassette
distributions. There are others that I'm sure work just as well. Other than
a limit of 1 color backgrounds (the paper color) and blck ink, I've been
able to hold the costs way down for all of my efforts and still have a
good quality looking cassette product.
