2605.0. "real EMAX, or Sears Emax?" by LNGBCH::STEWART (tryin' to hitch a ride) Fri Mar 29 1991 04:11

Just picked up the new Recycler and I'm looking at the Goodman
       Music ad:

"Digital Keyboard Sampler with 16 track download sequencer

Built by EMU for Baldwin Co. who purchased hundreds of these
incredible EMAX samplers for education and consumer use and
originally sold for $3000. We bought their entire inventory to
bring this amazing special to you, the professional musician.

       Features.
       o	Famous EMU sound
       o	10 disk library included
o	61 note velocity sens. kybd.
       o	8 individual, 2 stereo outputs
       o	16 track download sequencer
       o	RS-422 port
       o	3.5" floppy disk drive"

So, the question is...is this a deal? It sounds good to me, but
I don't really track this stuff. I guess you could sand the
       Baldwin name off, right?

These guys also have V50 demos for $599 and they mention that
they carry the QY-10, but they don't show a price.

Sounds right.. I hope you don't have to buy sight unseen. It better
have all those lovely buttons.. And, of course, I, too, dunno if it's
a DEAL until you post the price. A call to E-Mu Systems might not be
    out of place.

You may or may not be able to run the latest OS rev. I didn't
upgrade beyond OSv3.2 because a) they wanted $99 b) I hated the sounds
resulting from the new interpolation scheme.

All the details sound right. Don't count too much on the sequencer -
strictly download/playback only. Not even useful for live performance
to drive the EMAX and other SGU's since it won't even carry patch
    changes.

2605.3late night brain lock...LNGBCH::STEWARTtryin' to hitch a rideFri Mar 29 1991 17:279

Jeez, that's what I get for noting at night. The price is $769
and it looks like they've got a whole bunch of them. I'm sure
they'll have some out in the showroom, so I don't have to buy
       sight unseen...

So what's the going price for a real EMAX?

About a year ago I saw floppy-based RACK EMAXen for ~$1800.

So $800, especially new, is a smokin' deal... if you need the keys..
hell, buy two and stand one in the corner.. plugged in, of course..

WHERE was this smokin' deal seen?

You know, we have a name for this over in the Guitar Notes file -
GTS (Guitar Toy Syndrome). What's the equivalent thing here?
       STS?

Anyway, the Emax/Baldwin ?? deal is at Goodman Music, which has 5
stores in Southern California. Check the replies in the Latest
Hot Price note for location/phone number. I'm torn between this
and a sudden yearning for a Fireglo Rickenbacker 12 string (a
buddy brought one over on Saturday). Guitars appreciate, synths
       just get obsolete...

Hey, Hoyt, you're not gonna walk *this* thing around town with
       headphones, are you?

I think the usual local expression for New Toy Syndrome is "MIDIocy."
Alternatives might be "SGUphoria" or "psykeypathology".

I suppose I *could* lug around a sampler and a 12-volt battery to drive
it, and combine my Rahsaan-about-town DHX00 routine with my physical
fitness regimen... but it wouldn't be hip to play kool jazz and SWEAT.

I guess I'll look up the number -- thanks for the info. - Hoyt
