2602.0. "Laptop MIDI Interface?" by STOHUB::TRIGG::EATON (In tents) Fri Mar 22 1991 12:47

I have the opportunity to pick up a Laptop PC for a decent price and was
wondering if anyone has put out a midi interface that would work with a laptop.

	Any clues?

2602.1I found some answers... STOHUB::TRIGG::EATONIn tentsMon Mar 25 1991 13:1813
Well, I was able to find out by scanning the index of issues in
Electronic Musician - the Sept 90 issue had an article on PC interfaces. It
seems (as I suspected) that most interfaces are based on the de facto standard
put out by Roland - the MPU401 (or something like that). There are, however,
interfaces that plug into the serial and parallel ports. They give a list of
them in the article.

Of course, the big thing I'll have to deal with will be finding the
software that can use this kind of interface. Anyone know of any articles or
source of summaries of IBM-based sequencing and other MIDI-type software
products?

Cakewalk 4.0 will talk to the KEE MIDIator through the serial
port. I've been considering picking up something like this, too,
for those times when I need to disconnect from the Etheranchor.

Let me know if you need a good source ($75) for Cakewalk. Oh
yeah, I'm sure Cakewalk Pro will support the serial interface
       too.

I know this topic is for PC laptops, but it's probabally worth pointing
out that the Atari Stacy portable (fits on MY lap) has Midi built in.
It's not an MSDOS clone - you have to use Atari-based sequencers.

	RE -1

My reason for looking exclusively at the PC laptop is because it is
available to me through points I acquired within the Maritz software success
program. In essence, this laptop will only cost me a couple of hundred dollars
(I'm a little shy on points, but can use cash to make up the difference).

I'd be very interested in Cakewalk - I've heard a lot of good about it.
Perhaps you can contact me offline about it?

    How did this go ?

I have a lap-top I had always intended usng for this purpose but could
not find a board that worked of the ports?

I ended up not getting a laptop as it was not a very good deal after
all.

It appears, however, that Key (or is it KEE?) sells the most recommended
laptop serial interface. The difficulty has been finding out what software
supports it. I know that Cakewalk does, but I can't say who else does (not
that I've spent a lot of time looking...).
