2583.0. "DAC granularity- cc7 vs velocity" by SALSA::MOELLER (Karl has... left the building.) Mon Feb 25 1991 15:34
I'm working on a piece that seems to want a very soft Kurzweil choir
part waxing and waning way, WAY in the background of the piece. This
started me thinking.. I have 3 ways to shrink the volume of a sequenced
part. ONE: Put a CC7, volume event, at the beginning of the track.
TWO: leave volume at 127 but shrink velocity over the entire track.
THREE: dump the part to synchronized tape at full volume and use the
mixer fader(s) to shrink the volume.
And of course I started wondering about CC7 vs velocity.. I can't see
either of them giving me a break on DAC granularity.. quiet is quiet in
the digital world, and uses fewer bits. I made a copy of the track and
did the volume trick on one, velocity on the other.. no discernible
difference. I dumped it to two tracks on my Fostex, and compared it to
live-from-Kurzweil, and was gratified to hear little difference..
meaning that dolby C and the right tape work just fine. So the real
question is, what about DAC granularity and CC7 volume vs. velocity ?
thanks. karl
