2514.0. "IVL Pitchrider Guitar/MIDI Interface" by AQUA::ROST (Stevie Ray Fretnoise) Mon Dec 10 1990 12:09
A blowout on the IVL Pitchrider guitar/MIDI interfaces that were
marketed by Kramer.

A fellow on Compuserve is selling IVL Pitchrider 7000's (pickup,
cables, and a 1u rackmount unit that emits midi) for **$150**.
Apparently the deal is that IVL made these units for Kramer. IVL no
longer does business with Kramer, but is a subcontractor for Digitech
(as in the IPS-33B, Whammy pedal, etc.). This fellow (Steve Schiegner)
allegedly bought out all the remaining Kramer/IVL units in stock. These
units are supposed to have listed at $900 when Kramer sold them.
I bought one last week. It was shipped and delivered in a timely
fashion. It worked upon arrival. I mounted the pickup temporarily with
double sided tape just to check it out. Not bad. The pickup has 'pole
pieces' that are setup for 15/32 (2.05" from center of low E to center
of high E). They also make a 1.95 center to center, but that's not
what you get. It turns out that my custom trem fan's my strings out a
little further at the bridge (where you must mount the pickup for
optimal results), so I have ordered a new pickup (i.e. new, improved
design, better sensitivity, etc.) from IVL to rectify the problem. The
new pickup was $139, and they custom build them on a per order basis.
They also have a firmware upgrade that supposedly enhances tracking
and other features. It's $99. I ordered it as well.
Anyway, here's the fellow's name & such:

I just talked to Steve, and got basically the same story as the
Usenet posting in the base note. He's offering a money back
guarantee and he's got two types of pickups with different string
spacings. Apparently the update (around $100) requires you to
send the unit back to the factory, but then you have the
equivalent of the current unit which sells for $900. I ordered
mine with the Les Paul spacing...should be in on Wednesday.

2514.2 | Roland CP40. WHAT IS IT? | FASDER::AHERB | Al is the *first* name | Sat May 11 1991 21:31 | 5 |
| There is a Roland CP40 on sale for $99 and after talking to the guy
that worked at the store he says it is used like guitar->CP40->MIDI
keyboard. Sounds like what ive been looking for but my question is how
good is it? Is it worth $99? Anybody heard ANYTHING about it?

2514.3 | Unclear as to the intent of the CP40 | RANGER::EIRIKUR | | Sun May 12 1991 05:05 | 6 |
| It is monophonic, audio-to-MIDI. No chords. Intended for use with
microphones. Not really a guitar sort of thing. The latest Bananas
News has a short blub on it. Desktop wedge box.

| I would atleast want to be able to solo with it. Can it pick up
hammerons,puloffs,tapping etc?

From what I've heard of this thing (Usenet & other places), this thing
is really a toy intended for vocals - the catch is if you're going to
sing into this thing you'd better have perfect pitch. Apparently it is
very unforgiving. If that's the case, it'll really suck when you start
bending. For $100 I'd probably ask about their return policy, make
sure that I could return it for a full cash refund, and then take it
home and experiment. Let us know how it goes...
