2478.0. "Transfering K1 Patches from Atari to IBM-PC" by 50390::GENIUS (I'm *not* this mouse!) Mon Oct 29 1990 07:48

I recently bought a used Kawai K1 Synth. With it I also got an Atari disk
with lots of sounds. Unfortunately I 'only' own an IBM-PC compatible so I am
not able to read the disk. Has anuone got an idea how I can use these patches
on my PC?

BTW: Is there anybody in the Midi community who has got good K1 sounds
and want to interchange them?

Regards

    The only way I can think of right now is to temporarily get an Atari,
    load the sounds into the K1 and from there save them via sysex to the
    IBM. I think an Atari disk can only be read with an Atari system.
    Maybe you could even hook up a direct midi connection from Atari midi
    out to IBM midi in and transfer that way. But you'd have to have some
    kind of patch librarian for the PC to store the sounds.

2478.2Can read ATARI diskIBEEAM::GENIUSI'm *not* this mouse!Mon Oct 29 1990 13:3410
As I have heard today it is possible to read an Atari disk with a PC if
I overwrite the first sector with a valid PC sector. So this isn't the
problem (I hope...).

Now the next question arises: How can I load these patches to the K1?
I am useing Voyetra's Mark III SP3.

Thanks and Regards

	re: .-1

	If you just format them on the PC it'll work fine. Otherwise,
	there is a shareware-for-the-Atari program called DCFORMAT which
	will put an MSDOS boot sector on the disk for you when it formats
	the disk on the Atari. I do this frequently, when I have something
	I don't want to pipe over a 9.6K network link between the Atari and
	my 386.

To further clarify - if you format your disks on the PC, you can read
and write them on the Atari as if they were the Atari's own disks. The
file structure is the same, only the boot block (ignored by the Atari)
is different.

However, the suggest in .1 makes the most sense, since the software you
have for the IBM clone may not be able to read and write the same data
files as the software for the ST, so loading them from the ST, and
dumping into the PC may be the best way to go anyway.

Thanks, folks. I found someone who will make a PC readable copy of
the disk so I can try downloading the patches from my PC. If this is
not successful (what I would beleive...!) I will try to find somebody
with an Atari.

But what about the sounds? Doesn't anyone have good sounds for the K1?

Thanks and regards

2478.6I've got sounds....RANGER::EIRIKURTue Oct 30 1990 14:0212
    I have a lot of sounds for the K1 (and would love to have more), but I
    haven't mastered the technique for loading/dumping them in MIDI file
    format. I've got an editor/librarian on the Macintosh, and that works
    well. I've just got to do some work on the MIDI file side. Once I
    have that licked, I can put everything on the net. Don't tell anyone
    work-related that Eirikur's stumped by a multi-vendor network.  :-)

    Jim Orshaw is working on this from the Atari side; you might contact
    him about upload/download to the net for patch sharing.
