2457.0. "ATARI MIDI" by TASTY::HARRISON () Tue Sep 25 1990 13:01

    Hi,
I could not find the appropriate spot in this notes conference to put
this so sorry if its in the wrong place Mr Moderator!
Can anyone help me identify what I need to set up a MIDI system on
my Atari 520STFM? I am a complete novice to both music & MIDI. However
other members of my family are music orientated so advice is near by. I
would like to be able to create/modify music using drums, synth,
orchestra. I would like to be able to mix, playback, set a continuous
beat etc. I would like to buy something that is not only appropriate to
learning on but has scope to increase ability and utilise other
options. My particular area of interest is modern pop/rock/house. An
excellent example of a track I would love to play about with is the
theme from Channel 4's "The Word".
    	Hoping someone can help me........
    			regards Alastair
PS I'm in Snam(USH) the UK.

The other alternative of course is to contact somebody local who could
give you some short and sharp advice. Local users to yourself of
Atari's with sequencing systems are Bruce McNaughton @reo and Alex Bain
also somewhere in Reading. I am sure they won't mind a call. You could
also try me on 845 2162....

    HI!

I work in reading but live in Basingstoke. You're welcome to pop round
to my place some day after work and see what I'm doing with my MIDI
stuff. Give me a call if you want to fix something up.

    Wow,
More and more UK Atari/MIDIers crawl out of the woodwork.

So I'll just say I have a few CHEAP midi bits and bobs. I live in
Reading & work in Hampshire House, Basingstoke. Again, ring me if you
    wish. (768-5249)

Along with Jonathan Warburton-Brown at the TSC & Derek up in the north

    RE.0,

The theme to `The Word' is by 808 State, and is possibly called
`Olympic State', and if so is only available on promo. (ie. It's not
officially released, but some DJ's might have a copy).

The only good shop I know near Reading would be Kingfisher music in
    Fleet.

Kingfisher had stopped selling computer hardware, last time I asked.

But they did have an ATARI is store to demo software.

    Al,

As Richard noted Kingfisher isn't selling computer hardware anymore
because they've found themselves "undercut" by the mail order business.
Suggest you try ABC Music in Slough or Oxford. Other than that, you may
need to take a trip to London. Also, don't just look at Atari S/W, try
DOS & Amiga, some of the differences can save money.

    Hello,

I'm in Warrington too! You couldn't give me any info on who sells good
MIDI stuff and software etc. I only know Dawsons, which is a bit naff
    and VERY expensive.

Hi Matty,
you at Kelvin then ???? I'm at Spencer House....

Yeah, I've never been to Dawson's in Warrington since I live in Bolton.
I always use A-1 in Manchester, Oxford Road. There's also a shop in Bolton
I go to called HW Audio on St Georges road, but they only do instruments,
no computers or software.

A-1 is my favourite shop though most of my stuff I got second hand. I've
been in several other shops in Manchester too but I'm afraid I don't know the
names of them though.!
A-1 is the only place I've been to that sells software. Us Warrington midi
users will have to get together somewhere for a chat.

PLUG:
My band are playing in the Marble Arch, Rochdale Rd. Manchester on Thursday 19th
Oct (this Thurs) night if anyone wants to come! I play bass and keys...........
Free entry (but a fiver to get out)

I'll have to put a note in suggesting a Warrington/Manchester area midi
meet-up sometime maybe over a beer or two sometime....................

Howard.

    A1, sounds more like M25!

Howard, I'm at the NLC. I wear the warehouse uniform, safety shoes
etc! Not really, I work in the admin group there. Is your gig tonight
or tomorrow? I wasn't sure which because you said Thursday the 19th???
