    Hi,

Who can help me to choice the best MIDI PATCHER ?

I have got the documentation on:

    A-880 ROLAND and MJC8 YAMAHA

Can someone tell me if something else is available (on the european
    market) ?

    Thanks for your answer(s).

2431.1whats the full question??CSC32::MOLLERGive me Portability, not excusesWed Sep 05 1990 17:539
I have an MX-8 that I rely on heavily. I have multiple modes of operation
(recordind sequences, specifying controllers, merge functions, midi channel
bumping, CC filtering, velocity re-scaling & note transposing, as well as
different layouts for performance modes) that fit what I'll be using it for.

You might tell us what your goals are & why you think you need one. Advice
is easy to come by here, it's even better if we understand the question.

2431.3MIDI PATCHERS OR PATCHBAYSLEMAN::BRACONNIERMon Sep 10 1990 13:4147

    Hi,

Thanks to both of you for the answers. Next time I will follow your
advice and give details about my goals.

Can you tell me which company produces this MX-8 (Roland, Yamaha,...)
and how I can get the USER documentation ?

Among many other configurations, I want to use a MIDI Patcher in order to
    have this configuration (minimum).

I want to use CUBASE V2.0 with M.ROS and 2 SYNTHWORKS for the D20
and the TX81Z at the same time. For this I need to have the possibility
to MIX or MERGE the outputs of the D20 and the TX81Z into one output (to
be sent to the IN of the ATARI.

STEINBERG (CUBASE editor) produces and sells such patcher called
MIDIMEX (?) I think. But the price is high and I want to find the best
(and cheapest) product in the market not limited to M.ROS.

   Thanks for your answer(s).

    SONUS makes a compact MIDI switcher, 2 in, 8 out, for $99 U.S. - uses a
    wall bug for power.

2431.5You must want to do more...CSC32::MOLLERGive me Portability, not excusesMon Sep 10 1990 18:1413
The MX-8 would do what you want (but then so would the Anatek Pocekt
Midi Merge - lists for $99.00, but I got two locally for $80.00
each - yes, I merge MIDI signals an awful lot).

Be careful that you don't feed the output of one of your merged
lines back to the same input. I have had this happen before (my set
up is fairly complex) and the MIDI gear will lock up on you, usually
with jammed notes or other strange sounds (my FB01 sounded like
it was possesed by ancient spirits).

There is a note for the MX-8. Take a look there for more info.

2431.6MIDI Time PieceRANGER::ROBERTTue Sep 18 1990 15:0627

Not the cheapest way to go for what you're doing, but for you or anyone
else interested... the MIDI Time Piece by Mark Of The Unicorn (makers
of Performer and Composer for the Mac) is a VERY nice unit. It has
8 MIDI INs and 8 OUTs. ANY combination of INs to OUTs is possible.
It also supports filtering of MIDI data.

It is a single rack space unit that can be used standalone or with a
Mac. It is best used with a Mac however. It connects up directly via
the serial line to either the printer or modem port. That is, it
doubles as the Mac MIDI interface and doesn't count as one of the
in/outs. (You still have 8 of each left) It communicates at 1MHz or
special fast mode. It can be programmed by the Mac through a Desk
Accessory they supply with it. "Templates" can be saved and loaded.
Their sequencing software also has built in support for it.

A nice touch is that 1 MIDI IN and 1 MIDI OUT are located on the front
of the unit for quick temp patching. Each unit gives you access to
128 MIDI channels. Two units can be "chained" together for 16 IN/ 16
OUT or 256 channels... do this for both serial ports and you can have
a whopping 512 available MIDI channels! (Not that any of us would ever
really *need* that many, well except perhaps you Karl...)

To top it off, it will sync to AND generate SMPTE. List price... $495.
