2403.0. "Roland PC LA computer cards?" by MAMTS2::RUYOUNG (Big MIDI goes around the world) Tue Jul 31 1990 13:32

Speaking of Adlib (no I hadn't heard of it), has anyone seen the Roland
PC LA cards? I was busy being dazed by the 68030 Amiga's ray traced
animations, so I didn't ask. Anybody seen/heard of these things?

    Mike

What I meant to say was, they looked like cards you stuck in your
computer to have LA sounds out the back or something. Without a synth.

This was reviewed in Personal Computer World a couple of issues ago. Their
reviewer reckoned that it left the competition standing, and was therefore worth
the extra cost (can't recall what the figures were).

His one complaint was that it didn't come with any kind of test software.

2403.2What kind of processor power do you need?JANUS::CWALSHPaw CityThu Aug 09 1990 07:5518
On a related topic, I read a review recently of a PC notation product in which
the reviewer made a reference to the LA PC card. He stated, in a way that
suggested it ought to be common knowledge, that for adequate sequencing from a
PC you needed at least a 286 processor. Since I have an Amstrad PC 1512 (8086),
this has given me pause for thought about investing in the LA PC, since I'm not
sure that I want to incur the expense of upgrading my PC (which serves my other
computing needs quite adequately) just to cater for the demands of sequencing.

Is this contention about sequencing and processor power actually true? Does
anyone out there get adequate sequencing performance out of a humble 8086?
Investing minds would like to know.

PS My Yamaha WX11/WT11 package arrived this morning. I'm going home at lunch,
ostensibly to watch the Test match, but in reality - Welcome to MIDI Hell!!!
