    A request for info on the Korg P3 piano module (on Usenet) caused me to
    write about my current piano sound layering.  I thought it might be of
    interest to other people with less than perfect piano modules.
    
    I've been meaning to post something about my current piano sound usage. 
    I've been using piano sounds for some reason lately, and I have taken
    to layering the P3 (85%?) with an analog synthesizer (MKS-7, or
    Matrix-1000) piano sound (15%?).  This really gives it more body in a
    way that EQ can't manage.  I would use this on a recording of solo
    classical piano music, where I would not use the P3 alone. 
    
    A devoted programmer could tweak the synth patch to match the
    deficiencies of the piano module, e.g. adding hammer-strike.

    Any ideas how to deal with the most frustrating "nonfeature" of the P3,
    namely its lack of *timbral* response to velocity?  The P3 just gets
    lower in volume (like turning down a volume control) rather than also
    getting "softer" (i.e., less relative high frequency content) as
    velocity decreases.  I suppose one could adopt Eirikur's technique,
    EQ'ing the P3's "high end" into oblivion and using a parallel patch to
    restore it as velocity increases, but EQ is a global (note number
    independent) modification and this really wants to track the keyboard.
    In the "good old days" of real men and analog synths, one might have had
    access to a keyboard tracking filter, which would have dealt with this
    properly.  In fact, if the filter level was also velocity sensitive,
    it would have solved the whole problem.
    
    Am I asking too much of a $200 synthetic piano?

    Even though I invested in a big-bux (at the time) Kurzweil module,
    there have been a couple of pieces where I layered the piano sound
    with a piano sound from the EMAX.  The EMAX has a wonderful analog-y
    feature which can map the velocity to the filter cutoff, giving a 
    very convincing brightness to loud notes.
    
    So I certainly hear you regarding layering sounds with a piano
    sound for fullness or punch or whatever.
