2385.0. "Roland S-770" by GVA05::BOULMIER () Fri Jul 06 1990 07:55

Any news about that new wonderful sampler from Roland: S-770 ?

I know the major thing of it is the diferential interpolation which
gives better reproduction of sanples in high and low notes, does
anybody can speak about that ?

Does any body has already see/buy it ?

    Cheers,
    Pat

I saw one at Wurlys in Boston. Looked neat. I didn't really getto hear it --
to many kids playing guitar.

At the current price tag, I don't expect this is going to be a hot
item for people on typical COMMUSIC salaries.

Probably about a base-model hatchback from <insert your favorite compact auto-
maker> worth.

I seem to recall that the base price on a 770 was over $7K...

For that price they should be standard...

Dont worry. Six months from now they'll be $995 like
    everyone else.

Diff interp. is nothing new. Check the Keyboard Mag
    summary on samplers...

Part of the cost apparently is the 'non-optional' nnnMegabyte
Hard disk.....yes, you HAVE to buy theirs. SCSI beware.

2385.9What else ?GVA05::BOULMIERFri Jul 13 1990 14:3716
I think we might consider this stuff because it offers some things
    others offer at higher price.

What do you mean by SCSI beware, isn't it a "real" SCSI interface?

I also know that it has a nice user interface and other things that
are optional on other samplers ?

Do you thing we should forget it because its price is a little bit
higher than others because a lot of things come with it
(ie 40Mb internal hard disk) ???

It is hard to make a choice between AKAI, EMAX and ROLAND

    any idea ?

No....I cant poo poo it. I started to drool too when
I saw the ad in KEYBOARD.

I say SCSI beware in that I HOPE this is not a trend
to bundle big disks inside the unit. THIS COSTS THE
CONSUMER. ( or rather: we have no choice of vendor...
which can imply no bargaining power or free market..get it?)

2385.11The Customer Is Never RightAQUA::ROSTGet up and get hip to the tripFri Jul 13 1990 19:598

But look at it from the mfr's standpoint....lotsa customers bitch when
their SCSI drive and sampler don't wanna cooperate. Easy way out is
install the HD at the factory. Plus you also avoid complaints from
folks who discover that using the thing without a hard drive is almost
    impossible (can you say TX16W??).

Hey

I can say TX16W and I used it a lot without HD (though the V2 system
supposedly suppported them).

Apple sells all of their Mac IIs with HD, we sell mVAX (and others) with HD,
etc etc etc. There is still 3rd party to upgrade it/add onto it. Most of
the AT and up clones come bundled with a harddrive.

I believe the S770 has a 40 meg drive? That isn't much. Having SCSI allows
you to put on additional drives of your own choosing. Having an internal HD
makes a lot of sense. Your not paying 7K for the HD.
