2282.0. "Synthesized Vocals" by MUDDIN::DEBARROS () Wed Mar 07 1990 13:36

    	I'm not sure how to explain this so bear with me. I want to add
    	synthesized vocals to jazz/funk fusion recordings I'm working on.
    	Just some simple ooh's and ahh's, not singing entire verses. I'm
    	trying to give some examples but I can't think of anyone that does
    	this that is obvious. I think Stanley Clark uses this technique
    	once in a while, and If you have ever heard of Zapp, or Roger
    	(funk band), I believe he uses some sort of tube under his tongue
    	connect to a keyboard. Also, Teddy Reilly of Guy uses this sound.
	If you've heard Bobby Brown's "MY PREROGATIVE"... Teddy Reilly
	produced the song and uses that technique in the backround vocals.
	I was hoping for some kind of effect box that would do a similar
    	function.

    	Any Ideas??

    	Eric

    	Coupla solutions:

    		Use a sampler for ooh and ahh.

    		Use a vocoder. Roland and Korg made them. Yes, past
    	tense. So the problem is where to find one and how much you
    	have to spend...There was a circuit in Elec. Musician a year
    	or two ago that's about the same....give em a call and get
    	reprint?

    	The 'tube' thing (made infamous by Frampton...) is actually
    	a PA horn driver connected to a hose. Stick the hose in your
    	mouth, drive the driver with what ever sound you want, and
    	pick up the 'new' formants with a mike.

    	Either one can be polyphonic. The vocoder adds the formant
    	of a mike input (your voice) to the 'sound' (keyboard/guitar/etc).
    	The Roland unit is quite good, but can sound munchkin-like
    	at times. At least it doesnt vibrate your adams apple....

    	If you just want oohs and ahhs, tho.......samples should do!

    Use the 'tube' thing long/loud enough and all you will be able to say
    are 'ooohs' and 'aahhhs'. Nice way to check out how well your fillings
    (and caps if you're a star) are set. Not from experience, just what I've
    heard.

    PAiA makes a vocoder kit for $100. I had one. It was OK but would be
    better with compressor/limiter on both the voice and the instrument
    inputs.

    Sampling should work.

    Can DECvoice sing? In about 1982 I heard a speak-n-spell wired up to
    sing along with a guitar in real time pitch follow on New Music
    America.

    I bought one of those digitech smartshift thingies.

    My Oohs are better then ever. My Ahs is just like it always was.

    Worth the money if you can get one cheap !

Yes! A colleague of mine has some _very_ entertaining songs for the DECtalk.

2282.7Filter/vocoder treatment of samples?KALLON::EIRIKURGood tines, bad tines, you know....Thu Mar 08 1990 14:398
Haven't tried this, but...

You might try filtering (tight-bandpass) the samples, or vocoding them to get
other vowels. I keep meaning to give this a shot because my sample players
only have "ahhh" in them.

    	You can use two serial wired bandpass filters with each
    	set to different frequencies to get formant sounds.
    	I used to do this on a modular moog with great results.
    	ie:

    	source -> splitter > filter1 > filter2 > mixer > out
    		     |-----------------------------|
