2210.0. "Musical Startstreams Radio Program in Boston Area?" by SUBSYS::DOUCETTE (Jim Doucette) Wed Dec 20 1989 15:51

[ This request is also posted in RADIO_RADIO. However, I would
[ also like to poll readers here because I think I would have a
      [ better chance of success.

About 3 years ago, Boston radio station WMRQ 103.3 FM ("Q-103")
broadcast a couple of weekly syndicated shows called "Musical
Starstreams" and "The New Era". Each was two hours long.

"Musical Starstreams" originated in the San Francisco area,
was hosted by Frank Forest, and featured so-called "New Age"
music (electronic and acoustic). "The New Era" played much
of the same, but leaned more towards light jazz.

When I first discovered these shows, I rushed out and bought
a cassette recorder, and managed to tape about 20 shows before
the radio station changed its format and call letters. Those
20 tapes are now a valued part of my music collection.

What I want to know is: are either of these shows currently
being broadcast in the Boston / New England area? If so, on
what station and when (day / time)? Is anyone else around the
	country hearing these broadcasts?

Are there any other shows in the Boston area that feature New
Age / electronic / light jazz music

WBOS in Boston (not sure of the Frequency) has a show on Sunday nights
that starts off with New Age sounding Jazz, then switches to a New
Age show. It starts around 8:00 P. M. I think, but I'm not sure about
this either. The New Age is excellent, it has many different styles,
but all very good with few commercials.

WJIB also mixes New Age in with their evening/night programming,
but it's a mixed bag with other stuff that's not.

I taped one of those old WMRQ shows and wish I had taped more, but
WBOS is just as good, and I'm glad I discovered it.

RE: .1 - it might be Saturday, but I think it's Sunday night.

Maybe the moderators should modify the title of this note to be
"Electronic Music on the Radio".

--------------------
For at least 1 year prior to September 1989, I listened to "The Saturday
Morning Show" broadcast out of Boston College (Newton) at 90.3 on your FM
dial (WZBC), every Saturday morning from 10am-1pm. I have since moved
out of listening range. This is (was?) an excellent show featuring the
likes of:

Tangerine Dream,
Steve Roach,
Brian Eno,
Vangelis,
other international, national, and local artists.

-----------------

Also on Sunday evenings, at 91.3 (or 91.5, not sure) on your FM dial (I
was able to receive the signal in Framingham), from 5-6pm there was an
electronic music show on; and from 6-7pm they broadcast "Music from the
Hearts of Space".

-----------------------

How about electronic music broadcast in the Nashua area? Please???

Well, this reply is not specifically about electronic music or new age music,
but since you've mentioned radio in New Hampshire, I want throw in a plug
for WMDK.

I listen to WBOS because their new format, including their special features
such as the New Age and Jazz shows you mentioned. They have the best format
I've heard from a greater boston commercial station in a long time.

But when I want a little more "edge" to the music, I tune into WMDK out of
Peterborough. They are one of the few stations I know of that plays
alternative rock as a matter of course. They call it album rock, but they
tend to play things that you're not going to hear elsewhere. The DJs are not
the best in the world and kind of corny at times, but they're not afraid to
play new music. They even have a late Monday night show that features a new
artist--and just about everytime it's a band I've never heard of before--which
is why I listen to MDK in the first place.

WMDK is at 92 (I think it's .5) on the dial., Unfortunately, you won't pick
them up if you hook your FM antenna up to the local cable line. The Warner
Cable antennas must be faced toward Boston, because I can get Boston stations
great, but anything North or West of Nashua (WEVO, WMDK) is unavailable.

2210.5WBOS every night from 11-1?TALLIS::HERDEGMark Herdeg, LTN1-2/H09 226-6520Wed Dec 27 1989 19:444
I haven't listened recently, but a few months ago WBOS (92.?) was playing New
Age every night from 11 to 1, not just on Sundays.
