2150.0. "Roland Rhodes...new stuff?" by NRPUR::MCCONNELL () Mon Oct 30 1989 16:10

    Anyone got any news on the Roland Rhodes (I think it's the MKS-80)?

    Input on things like touch, price, sounds (I have an MKS-20 so I
    assume the basic Rhodes sound is there), the "detune" feature, how
    the grand piano sounds compared with the MKS-20, etc. is appreciated.

2150.1Not MKS-80DRUMS::FEHSKENSMon Oct 30 1989 17:075
    It's definitely *not* the MKS-80 - that's the SuperJupiter rack
    mount analog synth.

    Sorry...strike that "S"....it's the MK-80, apparently collaboratively
    developed by Roland and Harold Rhodes.

    I flipped through an article on it in RUG but really haven't gotten
    into the details. I haven't played one and wanted to know if any
    of youze guys did  ;-)

2150.3Fender Rhodes -> Roland Rhodes?DRUMS::FEHSKENSTue Oct 31 1989 12:516
    I got the impression from a recent ad that Roland has taken over
    the Rhodes mantel from Fender. Anybody have any confirmation of
    this?

    Well, I found one'o these units at a local shop - sounds like an
    MKS-20, plays like a Roland (i.e. mushy).

    no biggie. More variations available on the electric piano sounds-
    surprise, surprise.

2150.5I think Fender *and* Rhodes were soldTALK::HARRIMANDr. Science's younger brotherTue Oct 31 1989 15:2811

	CBS Musical Instruments used to own Fender, which owned Rhodes.

	Now CBS MI was sold to someone Japanese, I don't think it was
	Roland, but I wouldn't be surprised if Fender and Rhodes got
	split apart.

	The CBS deal was in the news recently. Anybody else remember more?

2150.6The world needs more Rhodes...WEFXEM::COTENo, Kelly. I said *wits*...Tue Oct 31 1989 15:359
    Why would anyone want a mega-ton Rhodes when there are all those
    nice FM 'Rhodes' patches around???

    What? You don't like high tines??

    Seriously, didn't I hear that the new unit also contained sampled
    FM Rhodes???

2150.7Imagine playing "Sleepwalk" on an FM Rhodes patch?DREGS::BLICKSTEINConliberativeTue Oct 31 1989 16:2327
    > Why would anyone want a mega-ton Rhodes when there are all those
    > nice FM 'Rhodes' patches around???

    Cause sometimes I wanna sound like something other than a Whitney
    Houston.  ;-)

    FM Epiano patches are nice but I think we've been oversaturated
    by them. Remember, I'm the guy that proposed taking points away
    from anyone who used the ESQ-1 DIGPNO patch on a COMMUSIC tape.

    The Roland Rhodes really is a superb sounding device. It really
    just EXACTLY gets all the classic Rhodes sounds.

    I consider the EPIANO1 sound on my RD-300 to be my bread-and-butter
    sound. If everything else broke down, I could probably get through
    a gig with just that one sound.

    BTW, another reason why I don't think those FM sounds will ever
    replace the Rhodes is that you can play some really out chords
    on a Rhodes and you still get that clarity and definition that
    allows you to hear every note without it sounding muddy.
    I suspect that's why the Rhodes was so popular, especially
    with jazz musicians.

    The Roland Rhodes have that property.

    Somehow, I just can't imagine Roland sampling a Yamaha FM Rhodes.

    From the ad in November's Keyboard...

    "...and a contemporary sound with the bell-like qualities of
    synthesizer-based Rhodes sounds."

    So, I guess it's not sampled, but it *is* there...

2150.10Stretch-tuning ?MUNCSS::BURKEJim Burke, @UFCThu Nov 02 1989 06:195
    re .-1/2
    I read an article on it. The stretch-tuning (selectable algorythms,
    note) seems to be what you're referring to.

    re: the feel of the new Roland Rhodes...

    The ads all talk about this amazing hydraulically-damped action that is
    pretty amazing. I played one at EU Wurlitzer in Framingham and thought
    the touch was nice. It definitely didn't require that "ton of bricks"
    technique that was required on my brother's real Rhodes 73 in the late
    70s. Note, however, that the Rhodes didn't sport any kind of
    aftertouch. That put it out of the running in my choices for a master
    controller.
