2083.0. "Demo Disk for Voyetra Sequencer Plus (TM)" by BAGELS::SREBNICK (Bad pblm now? Wait 'til we solve it!) Tue Aug 15 1989 17:54

I have a copy of the demo disk for Voyetra's Sequencer Plus V3.0
Mark III (TM). It's a sequencer librarian for the IBM PC. The demo
is 100% public domain, so I can put it up on the net with a clear
    conscience.

    It is in:

    	BAGELS::USER1$:[SREBNICK.PUBLIC.MIDI]VOYETRA.ARC

Copy it as you will. I will leave it there until September 15,
so try to grab it before then.

You'll need ARC software to restore the individual files.

I compared it to Cakewalk V2.0 (thanks to whichever MIDI noter put
that demo up) and was VERY impressed with Voyetra. One feature
that's important to me is the ability to enter music via means other
than my instrument's keyboard. I found that Voyetra was much easier
    in that department.

The Mark-III also has a "trace" facility (kind of like a datascope).
    Neat feature! Since I don't have an MPU-401 I can't see exactly
how it works, but the screen looks nice, and with a bit of imagination
one can see what the trace does.

The going to come in handy with me since none of these sequencers has
definition files, nor is there any documentation on MIDI message values
specific to my keyboard, the Roland E-20.

There are three Sequencer Plus (TM) products: Mark-I, Mark-II, and
Mark-III. They increase in price and functionality respectively.
The Mark III is selling for around $300, the Mark-II for about $200
(midi interface for computer extra). The Mark-I sells for about
    $225 including a MIDI interface.

2083.1More about the demo...BAGELS::SREBNICKBad pblm now? Wait 'til we solve it!Wed Aug 16 1989 14:3613
Well, I went out and bought the Mark-III V2.1. Got it home and
spent all night playing with it. For what I do, it's great.

I was able to input a song of about 75 measures from piano music in
about 3 hours. That included dividing the song into parts and tracks,
adjusting dynamics and tempo, putting in some MIDI program changes, and
playing the song over and over until I got it "just right."

A word about the Demo software in .0: It's for version 3.0, and
2.1 is what's in the stores now. Salesman called Voyetra for me
and said that the upgrade to version 3.0 is free.

I have SEQ plus Mrk III V 2.1 also. I hope what you're saying about the
FREE unpgrade is true. I just got a flyer from Voyetra saying that the
upgrade will cost $75 (to go from V2.0 to V3.0).

Although it doesn't get much press and is not glamorous like some of the MAC
sequencers, I still think (even more so now with V3.0) that Sequencer Plus
Mark III is the most powerful sequencer on the market today.

2083.4If it costs, that salesman's hurtin' for certain.BAGELS::SREBNICKBad pblm now? Wait 'til we solve it!Wed Aug 16 1989 17:347
I hope the salesman's right, too. I have a call in to Voyetra just
    to be sure.

Sometimes it depends when you buy the software. If the new release
comes out within "n" months of your purchase date, some companies
give some upgrades for free. Maybe I made the deadline and you
didn't. I guess we'll find out when I get my flyer.
2083.5the free update scoopOASS::B_MCMILLANWed Aug 16 1989 21:1625
I just got the Voyetra flyer several days ago and this is the free
    update policy:

'If you purchased ver 2.0 after May 15, 1989 and registered the
program, the update to ver 3.0 for the same level is free (eg. Sp2v2.0
to Sp2v3.0). Please include a dated store receipt with your name
on it as proof of purchase.'

Otherwise the upgrades are as follows (only showing Mark III):

    If you own Sp3v2.0:

    Sp3v2.0 to Sp3v3.0 (includes new user's manual.) $75.00

If you own Sp3v2.0 and Patch Master Plus:

    Sp3v2.0 w/PM+ to Sp3v3.0 (includes addendum.) $25.00

I also have all the other confusing upgrade, update, new purchase
information if anybody wants me to post it.

Here's our official statement concerning the release of our V-22/-24s MIDI
interfaces. To receive a free copy of our newsletter that details all of our
new products and prices, please call us at 1-800-233-9377.

Our new V-22/-24s multi-port MIDI interfaces couple a professional SMPTE
reader/ generator with a "Yamaha C1-style" multi-port interface. We opted to
make MPU compatibility an option on our system because an increasing number of
MIDI programs use the MPU in "UART mode" to avoid the limitations of
"intelligent mode." Since we were so impressed by the versatility of the Yamaha
C1, we decided to bring its innovative features to desktop PC's.

In tandem with designing the V-22/-24s, we developed "VAPI," our new universal
MIDI protocol. With VAPI, MIDI developers can easily port their C1 software to
run on the V-22/-24s, with the added benefit that it will also run on any other
VAPI supported hardware. VAPI is very similar to the Yamaha CAPI spec. If
you're a programmer and want to support the V22/-24s VAPI driver, please call
us for details.

The V-22/-24s provides a low-cost, multi- port, SMPTE interface with an easy
upgrade path. This makes it easy to buy only what you need, with the confidence
of being able to trade-up rather than trade-in.

Four models are available: V-22/ V-22m/ V-24s/ V24sm.

Its easy to upgrade between these models, since each is based on the same, 1/3
length PC bus card. A small module using the Roland MPU chip set plugs into the
card, turning it into a V-22m (for "Mpu"), providing 100% MPU-401
compatibility. A SMPTE module adds two ports, audio click detector and SMPTE.
The combination of a SMPTE module, connector box and V-22 card comprises the
V-24s (2 in/ 4 out with SMPTE.) Adding the MPU module makes this a V-24sm.

The modular design of the new V-22/-24s helps to assure nonobsolescence while
providing all the features needed for any PC MIDI application.

Prices are as follows:

V-22 (2 in 2 out) = $129.95

V-22m (2 in 2 out/MPU-401 Compatible) = $ 219.95
 	With trade-in of MPU-compatible interface = $169.95

V-24s (2 in 4 out/ SMPTE) = $299.95

V-24sm (2 in 4 out/ SMPTE/ MPU-401 Compatible) = $389.95
	With trade-in of MPU-compatible interface = $339.95

MSMPTE (SMPTE upgrade for V-22) = $199.95

MMPU (MPU Module for V-22/-24s) = $ 99.95

For a limited time, we're offering a $50 discount on the V-22M and V-24SM
interfaces if you send in any manufacturer's MPU-401 compatible interface with
your order.

For a complete list and description of these new features, as well as the
details concerning our MPU trade in offer, please refer to the file called
SP4SPEX.DOC.

2083.7Setup of Voyetra for IRQ7?MALLET::BARKERPretty Damn CosmicTue Jan 01 1991 15:3911
I've downloaded this and have been trying to use it now that I have a
Music Quest MPU-401 compatible interface. I've got this in a VAXmate and have
to change the IRQ on the board to IRQ7 as IRQ2 is used by the Ethernet
controller (I think). Unfortunately the Voyetra sequencer expects the MPU-401
to be at IRQ2 and I can't find any way to change this setting. Now I can do
this with Cakewalk and guess that it must be possible with Sequencer Plus if
only I knew the necessary invocation.

Anyone using Voyetra who knows how to change this?

2083.8Sequencer PLUS SYSEX recordingHEART::MACHINFri Feb 22 1991 08:2211

A friend of mine has Sequencer Plus, and he's using it with his M1.
He asked me if I knew the best way to store dumps -- presumably SYSEX --
from the M1 using his sequencer.

I said I didn't know, but I knew some people who did!

Anyone help out?

Richard.
2083.9I use GETIT availble from MIDI$LIBNWACES::PHILLIPSFri Feb 22 1991 18:0711
I know that just about all hardware sequencer allow you to dump
SYSEX data to them, however I don't know if software sequencer
    general come with that ability.

I also use Sequencer Plus with an M1, I use GETIT (Shareware) to
dump to my PC. I have tried dump to Sequencer Plus but it did not
work. GETIT is very reliable. I also got some shareware stuff
that saves individual patches and that also have a Random Patch
Generator. If you are interested drop me a line.

2083.10Questions about the DemoCSC32::MOLLERFix it before it breaksTue Sep 10 1991 20:5316
I pulled the demo over to my PC and there was no users guide (of any sort).
Since I don't yet have a MIDI card (it won't be MPU-401 compatable -
Voyetra doesn't require it), I can't try any of the functions. The Screens
are quite nice, but I'd like to run down the features and try to figure out
what it's doing. The MIDI card I ordered will have a VAPI software driver,
so anything that supports VAPI should work (this includes Cakewalk, not
just Voyetra).

The implication is that this is all very straight forward (and it doesn't
really look too confusing when run), but I'd like to know what the general
logic is for the software, and general Voyetra features (maybe this is asking
too much for a free demo). Anyone want to elaborate? The recent EM on
sequencers for MSDOS PC's has some details, but it's pretty much overviews
of many sequencers, and not this one in particular.

2083.11Hope this mini description helpsNWACES::PHILLIPSFri Sep 13 1991 12:5431
Well, assuming (yeah I know about ass u me) that it version 3.0.
    I'll give it go.

There are three screen you need to care about at first-:
o The main screen that comes up when you boot the software,
o The View screen- breaks the sequence down by beats
o Options screen - set tempo, lead in (for punch-ins) etc

Spacebar - start and stops play sequences (stops recording)
R key - put you in record mode, spacebar starts the recording
O key - get you to Options screen (PF3 from any screen)
ESC key - gets you back one screen
    P - Puts you in Punch-in mode
V - Gets you to the View screen, from here you can manipulate
               tracks. Copy, delete, move etc.
E key from here gets you to the edit note screen(never used
               it)

I found the package very easy to use and I have never really used the
manual much. If you live/come to the the Nashua area and would like
a demo I would be more than happy to show it to you. I also have a demo
version of the new Cakewalk package which is nice if you like using a
mouse, plus it has a bulk dump librarian which saves the dump seperately
from the sequence thus not using up sequence memory. Then there is the
new Voyetra with the Universal librarian...........alright I would shut
    up now.

    Regards,

    Errol
2083.12Well, close, but not excatlyCSC32::MOLLERFix it before it breaksFri Sep 13 1991 18:0512
Sorry, I'm in Colorado Springs. I'm just trying to compare packages before
I buy anything. Thanks for the info, it's not really what I wanted (but the
CAKEWALK demo info isn't either - I guess I was looking for technical specs
as well as how things worked within those bounds.

> Then there is the
> new Voyetra with the Universal librarian

I need a patch librarian (in particular one for ESQ-1's, CZ-101's and Roland
D series/MT-32's). Is this what you ment by Universal Librarian?

							Jens
2083.13SP GOLD has the Universal LibrarianNWACES::PHILLIPSFri Sep 13 1991 18:3719
Yep, that's what is meant by Universal librarian. The instruments
you mention CZ101, Roland D series and MT32 and all included on their
list of supported instruments. According to their flier you can do the
    following.
          - Programs can be accessed individually which
allows them to be audtioned, listed ,renamed, copied,
            rearranged into new banks, etc

I had a friend you recently had to make the same decision, he went
with cakewalk becuase he like the user interface (pull down menus with
mouse support). I'd go with Voyetra if I had the money, I really like
the MIDI volume and pan setting on each track. Seperate volume and pan
track just clutter thing up as far as I am concern.

Sorry I have no technical specs have never seen any either, just
functional spec. I have a copy of the Voyetra and Cakewalk
    newsletters.

Errol(who is not affliated with either Voyetra or Cakewalk)
