2080.0. "COMMUSIC VII - in memory of Dave Orin" by XERO::ARNOLD () Mon Aug 14 1989 13:54

    As mentioned in the Dave Orin note, I'm volunteering to compile the
    COMMUSIC VII tape in memory of Dave. Although it's not required that
    the submissions be anything other than the standard COMMUSIC fare,
    those influenced by Dave's COMMUSIC contributions to you and your music
    are especially welcome.

    Most of the rest of this entry is a rehash of the COMMUSIC VI "call for
    participation". Thanks to Paul Harriman for stting these guidelines
    down so well that I can just borrow them and put them here.

    On with the show...

    Set Order, Length, and Time
    ===========================

    If you have submissions, please group them in the order you wish them
    to be played. The order they are on the submission will be the order
    they will appear on the master. I will ignore "special instructions"
    about how to prepare the different songs in a set.

    Please have all your submissions as consistently recorded as possible.
    If you can make a reference tone, please do. I will assume -3dB
    standard unless told otherwise. Please do NOT place the tone in
    between submissions, and PLEASE leave five (5) seconds between the
    tone and the beginning of your songs.

    In the interests of fairness to all submittors, I would like to
    ask that you do not submit more than 12 minutes of material at one
    time. I'll accept 00:12:30-count stuff, if it can't be helped, but
    no 15 minute sets, unless we negotiate.

    Please send the titles and author(s), in the order they appear on
    the tape. I don't read minds, my apologies.

    Acceptable Media
    ================

    I can accept the following:
    	- standard cassettes (1 7/8 ips) with Dolby B or C noise reduction
    	- VHS HiFi
    	- Toshiba DX900 PCM digital audio
    	- 7" reels (1/4" tape) with dbx II noise reduction (or no N/R)

    My intention is to dub all submissions onto the Toshiba PCM format and
    make copies from there. I'll do my best at getting the best possible
    sound quality. Since our equipment probably isn't a perfect fit,
    please bear with me. If I get a sticky problem, I'll ask for help here
    in COMMUSIC or, maybe, request some of the local experts to help me
    out.

    Please tell me exactly what setup your submission is when you send it.
    It's not always obvious whether a casette has no N/R, dolby B, dolby C,
    etc.

    You may send your submissions to:

	John E. Arnold
    	251 West Main Street
    	Westborough, MA  01581

    Do NOT use interoffice mail to send tapes, orders, etc. If you have a
    question about what's going on please send me Email at AIADM::Arnold or
    post a note as a reply to this note. I'll answer as soon as I can.

    Also, submittors, please indicate whether or not you want your tape
    to be used as your Commusic VII tape. It should save you the cost
    of a tape.

    Ordering Information
    ====================

    	I'll defer ordering information until I see how quickly the
    submissions come in. I don't want any up-front money for tape,
    postage, etc. UNTIL the tape is just about ready to ship. The ordering
    information will be posted as a reply to this note.

    You copyright-protected folks, please send the date of copyright.
    (Though past experiences tell me that we probably don't do enough
    posting of the notice to guarantee your rights. Still, we try.) You
    non-copyright folks, you take yer chances. You cover players, this is a
    not-for-profit tape, and the 5 cents-per-copy royalties can be
    negotiated in a settlement with the author, providing the author
    complains...

    Let the tape begin...

    - John Arnold -

    P.S.  I'll add a COMMUSIC_VII keyword to this note so it's relatively
    easy to find.

2080.1new tricks for old musicSALSA::MOELLERWanna work in Wagga Wagga N.S.W.Mon Aug 14 1989 16:427
    excellentamente.. I've got (ahem) at least 12 minutes' worth, and
    would like to submit.. got a question, John : if I send you a PCM
    videotape, howreyagonna get it onto your PCM tape master ?

    ..unless you have a second deck and do the old video-video trick?

    >>> if I send you a PCM videotape, howreyagonna get it onto your PCM
    >>> tape master ?

    I'd probably take my chances with: PCM -> 15ips with dbx I -> PCM and
    see how it came out. This would involve dubbing to my 8-track but I
    doubt too much quality would be lost. I made a tape my wedding
    reception doing records to 8-track to cassette with good results.
    Starting with a better initial tape (i.e., the PCM) should be even
    better.

    Of course, if someone closer wanted to loan me their DX900 for a few
    days, I could do it directly... (too bad they don't have direct digital
    outputs!)

2080.3SALSA::MOELLEROne mile wide. One inch deep.Mon Aug 14 1989 22:016
    I don't like the PCM>multitrack>PCM cycle. If you have another
    VCR available, even a non-HiFi one, play the PCM submission on it
    and use the video ports - copies the PCM (on the video track) to
    the PCM deck digitally, without coming in the audio ins.

2080.4Help Is On The WayDRUMS::FEHSKENSTue Aug 15 1989 13:158
    I'm kicking in my DX-900 (locally available to John) to the COMMUSIC
    VII effort so we can go PCM to PCM via a video copy for DX-900
    submitters. Uhm, did I forget to mention that my VHS HiFi deck
    got attached to my Amiga monitor as an ersatz television set,
    necessitating the acquisition of a DX-900 for stereo mixdown purposes?

    Gee, I rationalized mine by giving my family's second VCR to my in-laws
    so they could watch home movies of their newest grandchild. Then, we
    "needed" a new second VCR and, what do you know, we bought a 900DX.

    Excuses, excuses.

When is the deadline for submissions ?
2080.7No deadlines - get it done as soon as you canDREGS::BLICKSTEINConliberativeMon Aug 21 1989 15:415
    There is never a deadline on submissions. They are collected until
    there is enough to fill a 90 minute tape - once there's enough
    the tape goes out.

2080.8Keep those tapes coming...XERO::ARNOLDliving in the big dreamMon Aug 28 1989 17:2511
    As db mentioned, there is no set deadline for submissions but I would
    like to get the tape out as soon as possible. If entries dry up after
    a bit and I don't have enough to fill a c-90 cassette, I may propose
    doing a c-60 or whatever just to get the tape going. For now, just do
    your best and send your stuff along when it's ready.

    By the way, I have 2 submissions already. If you've got a work in
    progress and want to let me know that a submission is almost on the
    way, feel free to send me mail at AIADM::Arnold or XERO::Arnold.
