2070.0. "Dave Orin, R.I.P." by WEFXEM::COTE (Gorillas In The Mix) Fri Aug 04 1989 15:01

Gahd, I hope this isn't true...

I just heard froman unconfirmed source that one of the regular noters
in this conference was found dead.

Details, or a retraction and apology, as I get them.

I really hope that there has been some sort of misunderstanding.
If not, as Brad says it is terrible. I've found Dave to be one
of the most genuine people I've "never met" (in person, anyway).
He certainly has helped be a lot in understanding this hobby and
never has made me feel like I didn't measure up as a MIDI musician.

Like I said I really hope there's been a mistake,

	I guess it's my turn.

I heard this morning that a Hudson man who lived alone on Vynal street
was found dead yesterday. Immediately, Dave popped into my mind, I knew his
street so well from getting lost finding it. I hoped for the best, went to
work and called around. No one seemed to know where he was, which was no real
consolation, because I couldn't remember if he had told me he was leaving on
vacation the next week.
And then I read the paper, which gave the full address as being 26
Vynal street; it was definately Dave.
I had tried to reach him this week; I was to have my weekly piano
lesson this past Thursday. I mailed him, called and left messages, and yet
there was no answer.

Last Thursday was our best lesson. We drug out the old classics,
and I listened to him play these, and then we worked on a contemporary piece
I wanted to play, `Hard Habit to Break.' But after the lesson, he opened
the Scott Joplin book, started cooking on the Black and White Rag, with me on
R-8 drums. We jammed 'til 10:30 with that honky tonk piano, and then I had
to leave...

I too had pleasant experiences with Dave - I demoed MTP, he demoed his

I saw a news report last night, but it said the deceased's name
was being withheld pending notification of the family, and I didn't
recognize Dave's house from the news pictures even though I've been
there several times. It never occurred to me that this unnamed
Digital employee could be someone I actually knew, never mind numbered
    among my musical friends.

Sadly, I have heard the same news. I am shocked and saddened.

Dave had been producing EPS sound disks, and had used me as a "beta
tester" for some of them. I really appreciated the effort that he
made to put quality into his work.

Last October I got into a group purchase of the EPS with Dave, and
as a result saved money. It was nice to have one more Ensoniq
    enthusiast to confer with.

I did not yet know him well, but I am going to miss hearing/reading
his advice and opinions in this conference.

The world is a sadder place for his passing.

    Sigh....

It's really true. Dave was the most giving person of any noter I've
seen. One often got the impression that there was nothing he wouldn't
do to help someone out. And as someone said, he was very genuine
about offering his help. He got enjoyment out of knowing that
    he had helped someone.

I once put myself in a hole by not making a backup of some samples
I was using. My sampler crapped out in the middle of an update and
the disk became useless. I needed those samples in a hurry.

I contacted Dave, explained my situation... All I know is that
those disks were in my mailbox the next business day! (Along with
some other software he though I might like.) He also
sent me updates on the OS and utilities. In fact, I think I still
owe him a few disks! I'd love to be able to pay him back.

I hadn't met Dave although he gave me plenty of opportunity. And this
is the first death of noting buddy I've ever had to deal with. But
because it was Dave in particular, I find it particularly hard
    to deal with.

I really felt like I knew him between his notes, and our mail and
    phone calls.

It's a tragedy and I'm going to miss him. There has to be something
appropriate we can do in his memory?

Although I am hoping there is more we can do, I would suggest that we
compile COMMUSIC VII and dedicate the volume to Dave and his
    contribution to COMMUSIC.

In the meantime, let me add to the chorus of voices who will miss Dave.
He came over to my house a few times and we chatted about his days at
Kurzweil, he showed me some tricks on the 1000PX and I showed him how
he could use Microsoft Works on the Mac to catalog the patch library he
had built up. It was always fun. Quick and meaningful friendships
were one of Dave's strengths. I'll miss him.

on the phone, and through mail and notes. He was very helpful to me. In
fact I had been calling him this week, and leaving messages, sending mail,

This happened a couple weeks ago to a regular noter in SPORTS Notes.
All the members there sent donations to one focal person who in
turn sent them to the family of the deceased, along with a card

HUDSON MAN FOUND MURDERED IN HOME

	By Elizabeth C. Smith

HUDSON - A 41-year-old Digital Equipment Corp. employee, reported
missing for several days, was found murdered in his bedroom late
	yesterday afternoon.
The man, whom police are refusing to identify until his next of kin
are notified, was found by police after his employers at Digital
called police to say the he had not shown up for work for several
	days.
Lt. Raplh Sleeper went to the man's tan, split-level home at 26 Vynal
St. at 5 pm to investigate and found the man dead, police spokesman
	Sgt. Jay Murphy said.
Although one officer said, "It appears that he was bludgeoned,"
Murphy would not comment on how he died.
Early this morning, police kept a tight lid on information surrounding
the death, declining to quote specifics about the man, his background
or his death. Police said they expect to release more information
after an autopsy is completed today. The body was taken to University
of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester for the autopsy.
Police believed the man lived alone in the quiet residential area of
recently built homes about a quarter-mile north of Rte. 62, and a
	half-mile east of downtown Hudson.
Murphy did say there was blood inside the home, but that "It's not to
be released where the blood is."
There was no sign of forced entry and the front door was locked,
according to Murphy, but he did not say how Sleeper had entered.
Murphy also said that the home dod not appear to be ransacked.
Hudson police, State Police and the Middlesex County district
	attorney's office are investigating.
The murder is the first in Hudson in more than two years. Walter
Gould was convicted of killing his grandmother, Josephine Page, in her
	Hudson home June 3, 1987.

This seems like a trivial thing at a time like this, but someone asked
"What can we do for him?" It immediately occurred to me that someone
should make sure that the EPS disks he was working on get (finished if
needbe) and sent out to Ensoniq or put in the public domain. It was
his art and he would want it out in the world where people can benefit

Way back when Dave was hoping to create DECMS, he, Butch Lietz and

This has indeed come as a shock to me, and I don't think I've over the
numbness of it yet. I was one of the two who went out to Dave's house
when we realized that something was seriously amiss.

As some of you may know, Dave and I were working on EPS samples and
instrumental music. We had a number of projects underway, and I would
still like to see some of them them through. Dave enjoyed music more
than anything, and it would be good, I think, to keep his spirit alive.
A tape dedicated to his memory is a fine idea.

We've all enjoyed the Wurlygigs and Uniongigs. Dave brought a lot of
dedication and enthusiasm to all his musical activities. He was always
willing to help show people how the equipment worked, or where to get
the best deals, or what to buy and what to avoid. I can't begin to
guess just how much help he must have been to all of you.

Since I work here at NKS-1 and was probably his closest friend in the
area, I would like to volunteer as the coordinator for your thoughts
and condolences. Dave had no family in this part of the world; they
are all from Washington State. I think it would be good if all of you
would express your feelings to his family. I could assemble them from
your mail and notes, and pass them along to his family. I can be
reached at SUBSYS::LYNCH, or at NKS1/2-H6.

Dave will surely be missed. It's really true, only the good die young.

I'll certainly keep everyone posted as soon as I hear anything.
Needless to say, the police are taking this one very seriously, and
they've been pretty tight-lipped about it. I was asked questions by
    them at NKS this AM.

Someone asked about the ocean disk. As it happens, most everything
that we were working on is going to be completely unavailable to me
until this whole matter settles down. But I DO have a copy of the
ocean disk, and I'd be happy to make it available upon request.

Also, I stopped by Union Music (yes, Union, Wurly's, Caruso's and
Ensoniq all know about this already -- news like this travels fast).
Jeff said that he would have no problem if we wanted to gather in the
store some evening just for memory's sake. We could use that
opportunity to all sign a card for this family. If you'd like to
participate in this, please send mail to me at SUBSYS::LYNCH, and I'll

I was up early today, saw the story in the Globe, and rushed to COMMUSIC ASAP
hoping that there was some mistake.

Even though I have only been involved in this notes file for less than a
year and I never met Dave in person, I feel like I knew him. When I had
a rather unpleasant misunderstanding with one of the DECMS stores, I sent
Email to Dave asking his opinion on how to discuss the problem in the
notes file. Dave argued that it was probably better not to raise the
issue at all since it might not be an entirely fair reflection on the
store. He explained that he spent a lot of time trying to establish the
contacts and offered to help resolve the problem.

Impressed at Dave's quest for fairness and the logic of his arguments, I
never entered the note. The store did eventually resolve the problem.
Ever since, I have carefully read Dave's entries never losing sight of his
role in DECMS.

I will miss him.

Dave's disks and their contents (as part of his personal property)
belong to Dave's estate, and thus, probably his next-of-kin; our desire
to "do the right thing" with them is irrelevant at best, and an
insult to his kin at worst.

If his next-of-kin agree, it _would_ be a fitting memorial for the

so I am just seeing this now. This is truly an awful thing. I wa just
getting to know him personally, having been to his house two times, most
recently on Wednesday, the 26th of July. He was one of the nicest and sincerest
men I've known. He will truly be missed.

RE: .26

I reflected a bit since writing my note on Saturday, and realized I had
not fully conveyed my impression Dave's role in COMMUSIC.

Dave welcomed me to the notes file last fall. He sent me a list of DECMS
stores, added me to the mailing list, send me a copy of the cover letter
used for each contact, and gave a general pep talk about the notes file. I
have never been welcomed in this way to any other notes file before or
since. As a result, COMMUSIC is now the first non-work-related file I
read.

In addition, I have seldom found a notes file in which the membership
appeared to be as receptive to new members' ideas as COMMUSIC.

I believe that this open, supportive approach was due in large part to Dave
Orin. Perhaps the best memorial to Dave is to find a way to continue his
"welcome wagon" approach. That's how I'll remember him.

We all can unanimously agree that Dave had a tremendous
contribution to the COMMUSIC community. Another contribution of
Dave's I don't think many of you know is that he was also the
founder of the DRC (Digital Running Club). One lunchtime we were
talking MIDI and running came up (dont know why actually). I remember
his words,.. "..I was the co-founder of the DRC.....but you'd never

Alex, Dave never said anything about the 'welcome wagon' to me. Sounds

I know nothing that wasn't printed in the papers. My interpretation

I was thinking. It would be nice if his next-of-kin don't have any use of

many could make use of it. It would also help a music department somewhere who

I hadn't been active in this notes file for at least a couple of months
for various reasons, but when I started reading it again, one of the first
notes I read was Dave's note under sampler tricks, where he was putting
together his ocean sounds disk. I think it gave me a little insight into
someone I'd never met in person. Reading that note made me fell good!

I thought, what a great way to unwind, and what a creative way! I was
really impressed with that. From the notes I've read, and from what
people who actually met Dave are saying, he was a really good person
who offered so much to all who knew him.

The world needs more people like Dave. I know he'll be missed.

I met Dave at the Ensonic demo at Union Music, and at Wurlygig.
It was obvious that Dave was an extremely intelligent, articulate
person. I asked him if he could help get a guitar wurlygig set up
around last Christmas, but the guys at Wurly were too busy to do
it at the time. For someone as knowledgeable as Dave, he was very
modest and addressed people on their own level.

Dave will certainly be missed by everyone that knew him, and by
many that never had the pleasure of meeting him in person.

    I, like many of us, felt like I 'knew' Dave through his noting;
and I even got to meet him once when I bought a piece of equipment
from him. We talked more about the Celtics than we did about music,
and I found him to be a gentle, open man, who was very serious about
his music. We even tangled a little in the Celtics notesfile, but
I'll always remember him as the guy who went out of his way to tell
me how to use the compressor/limiter he sold me and what problems he
had found with it. He asked me to call him if I had any questions

This is really unbelievable. Dave was one of the first to help
me out when I had to liquidate my MIDI gear, a very sad time for
me. He quietly helped a lot of people. I really enjoyed the Wurlygig

I've only now returned from a vacation, in time to read the previous
58 notes. It will probably be some time before I can really deal with
    this.

I plan to be at TF on the 16th. Dave, wherever he is, is the kind of
guy that will probably take some comfort in our getting together
and will hope that we can remember the good times and remain true
to the spirit he fostered in COMMUSIC. In my dealings with him,
I experienced that he was generous, kind, open, helpful, humble,
empathetic, literate, technically proficient and personified many
other admirable qualities. He was a good friend without you having to
do a whole lot to earn his friendship. I am hopeful that good can

I told Mike Lynch about a conference room in PK03 that has been dedicated to
a fellow named Dan Cook. The Dan Cook conference room has two plaques, one
outside that says, 'Dedicated to the Memory of Dan Cook by his colleagues

I've been thinking about what I can do to honor Dave's memory.
Although I was on my way out of town when I first caught wind of
this tragedy, I caught up on this sad note while at DEC U last week.
I had the chance to stop in Acton's and the Fram. Wurly's and the
people I talked to seemed to know about Dave's death and how shook
up we all are about it. I had a long chat with Dave the week before
I left on the 1000PX and why I should also give a good listen to
the R-5 drum machine. (The uncanny thing about him was how his
observations on gear were almost always right on the money!).

Before I headed East, I had prepared a tape for Mr. O to "preview"
because I knew I could rely on a "kinder and gentler" approach to
critical analysis of the music. As I said in .3, Dave just seemed
to have a way of making you feel that you were doing the right things
and asking the right questions, no matter how dumb you felt. My
technical skills are not up to the mean level of the COMMUSIC crowd,
if CMIII is representative. However, after some reflection, I think
that if I can just be as helpful and encouraging to others in this
notesfile as I can (particularly newcomers), that will be the best
way to thank Dave for all his help and to continue to learn. Of
course, that might mean not typing NEX UNS as much (:-)), but I think
it is worth it. I can't make the service tomorrow, but will be
    there in spirit and sentiment.

2070.85short note about the fine memorial service KALLON::EIRIKURThu Aug 17 1989 20:3313
I've been meaning to write up a note about the memorial service, for
those of us who couldn't be there. I'll get to it next January if I
don't do any music stuff between then and now, and since I stood up and
spoke, I volunteer somebody else. Somebody with the time, please
catch the flavor of the experience.

I was very impressed with this tasteful, supportive, nondenominational
service. His mother was there, and she got to hear several people
say the good things that we have all put in here. The folks who
planned this did a wonderful job. I felt that Dave was well served by
such a respectful and yet very warm assembly.

We need to do this kind of thing more often. It was really a pleasure
meeting with you guys. Dave would have really liked the BIM ...

Hey, db, your tape was really great! No kiddin', it's going to
put my submission to real shame ... Boy, after talking with you
guys, it really sinks in how much I miss my toys ... :,(

Thanks for representing all of us who were not able to join.

Is there still no news regarding official circumstances?? I guess
it matters less and less, since now my sadness exceeds my shock
    and retribution levels.

    Thanks.

The Middlesex News reports that Dave's death was accidently
self-inflicted. They have good reason to believe this, but frankly,
    I'm not publishing it.

re the last three or so.....

We seem to be squeemish about repeating in the conference what
is distributed freely in the (local) press. I think it stems from
some sense of loyalty to a late member ??? Self inflicted
asphyxiation seems to be the general conclusion, I think we're trying
to avoid value judgements on the details, some of which were
published. If we (or I) repeat them here it is likely to be with our
coloring, or at least that of the local press if we stick to quotes.
I want to avoid that.

Well to someone who's not part of the east-coast "group" this is
    all rather mysterious.

    Inquiring minds want to know.

According to my calendar, it was one year ago today that the NKS folks
held the Memorial Service for Dave Orin and we had a LERDS-BIM in
Dave's memory. Perhaps we could each take a moment today to remember
    Dave.

Thanks for that reminder. I've been playing the tape in may car
lately. The ocean sounds and Maple Leaf Rag make it seem like Dave was
    jamming with us. Good memories.

I've been working on a piece that uses Dave's Ocean Time EPS sample
    sequence as a background.
