2043.0. "Hooking Roland MT32 to VAXmate" by CURIE::DECARTERET (I81B4U) Wed Jul 12 1989 20:04

Also posted in NOVA::COMMUSIC
-----------------------------

Last night I got the game Leisure Suit Larry II. While setting up the game to
run on my VAXmate, I came across the option of installing the Roland MT-32 as
the sound source. Now, I have an MT-32, so naturally I was wondering on how to
go about hooking one of these up to the VAXmate for the sounds. Is there a
option card you can get for this, or is there some kind of hack (that will not
exceed the category of `somewhat' difficult). What kind of prices am I talking
about here??

I appreciate any help, and I'm excited to see how I can do this because I'm
sure it will be fantastic!!

You'll probably need an MPU401 (or facsimile). I don't know what they
run (I'd gues somewhere between $100-150).

You may try doing a dir/title=VAXMATE ... I think there was an earlier
    discussion on this.

As far as I know, the MIDI interface is RS-432. I think there's a
difference in the power levels from RS-232, so there shouldn't be much
modification required. Ask a h/w eng.

    Watch out !!

I think I saw somewhere that the Leisure Suit Larry program had a virus
in it - so if you just have a copy (rather than the original disk)
then I advise that you check it out using anti-viral software.

    Re: .0

As .1 mentioned you will need a MPU-401. I have an IBM AT at home and
just purchased a Roland MPU-401 and MT-32 for $550.0 from Sierra
On-line. As you suspected, the sound is awesome!

    Re: .3

It is definately true that there are virus copies of LSL I around.
Make sure you have the original disks when you install it on you hard
    disk.

WOW!! That price is EXCELLENT!! I've seen the MT-32 alone for $550,
so it's like getting that card free!!

Does anyone have a used one they would like to sell?? I am VERY
interested in getting a MPU-401, but unfortunately I have little money
to sacrifice. Or how about the mail order address to order one. This
is going to be great!! I'm getting excited already!!

    Thanks for the info...

Just to confuse the issue, are you going to want sequencer
software after you solve Leisure Suit Larry? If so, you might
want to consider a bundled package... Like MPU-401 clone &
Cakewalk for a little over $200. Forgot the exact price. Check
the ads in Electronic Musician magazine.
