2029.0. "My old Fostek 8-track mixer is acting up" by BARDIC::RAVAN () Mon Jun 19 1989 20:16

I recently started making some simple recordings of CDs and live piano
as choral rehearsal tapes, and due to the law of the "Perversity of
Inanimate Objects", my Fostek 8-track mixer started acting up.

Eventually I disconnected everything from the mixer except the connector
to the meter bridge and the original symptom was still there. All the
meters read about -20db worth of steady state signal. It seems to come
and go. This must be straight DC since it makes no audible sound.

Also the mixer seems to operate "strangely" (I think, but it was late).
Stuff that should have been playing on the same track that it was recorded on,
seemed to becoming out of the wrong speaker. I know you'll all say "cockpit
error", but I checked for about two hours. Finally I gave up and got out
my old Radio Shack cheapo mixer that worked well enough to let me get the
job done.

So any ideas on what could be causing random appearances of DC? Even when
there's nothing going into the mixer? This just started recently, so I'm
baffled.

regards,
-jim

I had a cold solder joint in my Teac Porta-studio cause one of the meters
to do something similar about a year ago. I resoldered practically everything
relating to the channel (just touched each connection with a low wattage
Iron & a tiny dab of solder). This can take quite a while, as most of the
time is spent during dissassembly/assembly & taking care not to loose parts.
The Teac opens up like a book with a foldout in it (3 boards with the center
one having all of the pots on it & mounted to the case - lots of cables going
from the center board to the other 2 boards (one on each side). Take care
if you pull things apart. The worst thing that seems to happen is when you
drop a screw or washer into a mechanisum (I always seem to do this at least
once).

It sounds like a ground referance has dissappeared somewhere in your deck.

Sounds like a classic Tuttlefield effect...
