1808.0. "Poll - Sampler Memory Loading Times From Storage Media" by NORGE::CHAD () Tue Dec 13 1988 11:52

This is for the sampler load time poll. PLease state model, amount of
memory being loaded, and a time for loading of that memory, as well as medium
beig loaded from: floppy, HD, etc.

    EMAX, 512K of *8*bit compressed-format samples (equiv to 750K
    of 12bit samples) :

3.5" floppy, full, loads in 18 secs.
hard disk (HD model) loads memory in 3 secs.

EMAX loads a sample from Optional C D interface in *18* seconds!

Ensoniq EPS loads 1000 256-byte blocks in about 40 sec.
Fragmented floppies take considerably longer (>10 sec more).

No data on hard drive load times.

Of course, this is offset by the fact that you can still use the
    machine while you are loading.

OS V2.2 loads, calibrates, and otherwise boots within 18 sec.

Mirage can load samples in about 5 seconds. No idea how big they
    be.

    From floppie...

    Edd,

I think the Mirage memory is 64K per upper and 64K per lower.
    So I guess that's 5 secs for 128K.

WOW, so that's 39 usec per bit. 8^))

S-330 loads full disk in 36 secs. Thats 14.4 secs of sampling at
30kHz. This load includes all wave, MIDI and function data and was
timed from hitting GO button to being able to play first note. It
also includes updating the screen with the super user interface
that it uses so I suppose you can subtract a couple of microsecs
    for that!!

Don't laugh :-)

I finally got around to timimng some loads last night:

a disk with 6961 blocks of 64 12bit words or 96 bytes loaded

with the V1 OS in 149 seconds or about 4478 bytes / sec

with the V2 OS in 129 seconds or about 5173 bytes / sec

The V2 OS gives you 10-15% faster load times. I am going to play around
with different formats when I get a double sided drive in my Atari ST
to se if that will improve speed at all.

I was not able to use a PD Atari disk copier (DCFORMAT) to copy TX16W disks.
It bombed reading the disk. I haven't tried any of the copiers that are
supposed to copy anything. I was however able to copy all the files from
a the disk into a RAM disk using the old lasso the files and drag them. I then
copied them back onto a new disk using the same method and the sampler was able
to load up the disk without problem. I have no timing data fot this however.
