1735.0. "Using Yamaha RX15 Tape Load/Dump" by POOL::CLABORN () Mon Oct 24 1988 18:23

Just picked up a used Yamaha RX15 rhythm machine at Daddy's over the weekend.
Neat box, but the factory presets had been wiped out in a previous lifetime.
I've scoured the manual (yes, a piece of used equip. *with* manual!), but
could not find a magical key sequence to restore the presets.

Any of you wizards out there with RX15 experience know if there is a sequence
to restore these presets?

Q2: After programming in a couple of simple patterns, I tried the cassette
save and load features. No problem getting the stuff to tape, but when
trying to verify or load, the unit seems to hang, ie, either
"VERIFY EXECUTING" or "LOAD EXECUTING" is displayed forever (at least
    15 minutes when I reset it). Connections, cable continuity all verified;
no problem. The tape plays back, and at the end, I get no LOAD OK or
LOAD ERROR msgs, just EXECUTING. Any ideas?

Thanks! - George

(Maybe this is why I was able to so easily talk him down from $179 to $100!)

    RE: tape loading...

Do you have some way to monitor that the data is actually going
out the cables? You should be able to hear it on a data-cassette
recorder regardless of whether you are saving or loading...

And, silly question, but do you (a) *know* your cables are good?
and (b) have them plugged into the right jack? Yamaha uses DIN
jacks for the cassette interface. (Dunno if the pin layout is
    the same though....)

RE:.1
Answers are, "yep, yep and yep". Ran the output of the cassette through my
receiver and got all the good gobblety-gook plus the beginning/ending timing
signals. Checked the cables with a multi-meter, verified with the manual that
things were hooked up right, even went so far as to take the cover off and
verify that the signal is getting past the mini-phono plug inlet (ie, continuity
to the 1st PC board connection).

I really think Q2 in .0 is a bug/broken hdw. Just wondering if other RX15
users had ever experienced anything like this. Any ideas on Q1?

The tape loading sounds like a level problem. Are you using the
cassette deck's line level outs or the phone outs? If it's line
level, even though the signal is there, it may be far too weak for
the machine. You might try hooking up a tape deck that has an earphone
    out.

I have an RX15 and have had the "Verify/Load Executing" ad infinitum problem.
In my experience, it goes away when the output level from the cassette is high
enough. There doesn't seem to be much margin for error between not enough
signal causing that problem and too much signal causing verify errors.

Yeah, my experiences using audio dex for data storage have been
    frustrating at best also.

I solved the problem by buying a Rat Shock data-dec for $30. Now
all my loads and dumps work the first time, every time. JX, DX,
RX, TZ, HR, everything is happy....

RE .3, .4, .5:

Hmmmm... sounds like you guys are on to something. I've been taking the signal
from the left channel stereo out line of my 4-trk with the fader set so that
the channel peaks between 0 and +3 db. I'll try taking the signal a) direct
from the channel #1 out and b) from the headphones out with a little more
boost. I'll let you know tomorrow if that solves it.

Thanks!! - George

PS - I found on the inside cover of the manual last night a little caution
stating that cassette save and load is the only way to restore factory
presets. Since I didn't have any to begin with, I'm up a creek. Any of
you guys have an RX15 cassette dump with the presets on it that I could
borrow to get started? Send me a note on POOL:: if you wouldn't mind me
duping it. I'd be much obliged. (We're assuming of course that not
     enough signal is my problem!)

BTW, Radio Shack only has one data recorder unit now (they used to
carry two) and it is on sale this month for $39.95 (regularly $59.95).

That did it!! Took the signal from the phones out boosted almost all the way,
and had no problems verifying or loading. Thanks to all... this is the way
notes files *should* work.
