1721.0. "OFFICIAL GOODBYE NOTERS TOPIC" by ANT::JANZEN (Tom LMO2/O23 296-5421) Thu Oct 13 1988 13:08

    Hi
I just wanted to say that sometime in the next 5-10 years I may
leave Digital. After being battered on by the rock-heads in music
conference, and then ridiculed by the musically untechnical software
engineers in Commusic, I have learned to hate music, musicians and
music listeners in general. So now I do light Performance Art (Mobius
    354 Congress 5th floor Saturday 10-29-88 8PM probably a few dollars).
I just want to thank you all for that, because I now feel for the
first time part of a community of creative people (not you, for
pete's sake, artists in Boston), and feel welcome among them, something
I never felt among composers in Los Angeles (or Boston, or here). I also
have more and better friends among Performance Artists in Boston
    than I have ever had.

So Thanks for turning me against music! It was the best thing that
ever happened to me! So until we meet again (don't know where,
    don't know when),

TRY TO LEARN SOMETHING ABOUT MUSIC!!!!!

Gees, Tom, is this your second goodbye note?

If all is true in your note than why have you even bothered
    particapating at all?

Because this is a very good place to get information. About equipment,
software, computers, recording technics, hardware, reviews, opinions,
trends, humor, etc. Tom Janzen's opinion of whats valid musically
is just that, an opinion. What's good musically is very subjective
and there is a wide variety of tastes and ability in this forum.

Your opinions add to diversity of this conference. I find your
diatribes especially entertaining, at times offensive. Popular
music won't go away because you think its not valid and only
"vulgar rock-heads and philistines" enjoy it. If you have "learned
to hate music, musicians and music listeners in general" becuase
of entries in this file, that's your head trip.

This conference will contionue to flourish.

    A semi-related question:

When I became co-moderator of this conference, I had intended to deal
with organization, not noise ... yet it seems that "noise" topics (like
these) are destined to pop up. I personally NEXT UNSEEN past them most
of the time, but there has been an interesting question brought up by
    another noter (privately):

Given the current conference format and membership, is it
either advisable or appropriate for the moderators (ie. me)
to blast topics like this? Or should they be left to their
	own and eventually fizzle out?

I can see both sides, and since this topic is pretty useless otherwise,
    I'll solicit opinions here.

Re: moderator's question

I like non-serious topics every now and then and would urge you not to
delete them. I think they clutter up the directory less than
redundant serious topics, and add interest to day-to-day
     conferencing.

The big job that I want a moderator to perform is to relocate
informative topics which apparently belong under a previous topic.
These make day-to-day conferencing less interesting.

Agree with the previous two. An "organizer" is fine. Brad's doing
    a great job.

I see no need for a noise filter. (To be quite honest, since Brad
has been doing this he's typed in SET MODE/[NO]MOD in his titles
a couple times, but not invoked his privs. Nonetheless, just the
sight of the phrase set my hair to bristling...

Some conferences require active moderation. This one doesn't.

    But, gee, thanks for asking!

My vote is leave these notes in whether they are perceived as "noise"
or not. Let the reader have the choice of reading or set/seening.
After all, there isn't any profanity here or proprietary information
or copyright violations, etc. To delete topics because they may
be perceived as "noise" by some readers is not fair to other readers
who may find humor or whatever in them, and could be construed as
    censorship.

Brad, you're doing a great job. Keep up the good work!

Ok. I'll leave 'em ... reserving the right at some future point in

And thanks for the kudos, Mike D.

1721.23Another view, sortaFGVAXL::MASHIAWe're all playing in the same bandMon Oct 17 1988 18:5620
I dunno. Every time I see a bunch of "noise" notes, I think of those
Noters who might be on a 1200 baud modem, or in Europe, with stuff
    c r a w l i n g across the screen. And I am occasionally frustated
(albeit mildly) when I'm looking for "hard data" on something and
have to wade thru another round of Tom vs Karl.

But I find that most of the stuff *is* genuinely entertaining (methinks
dealing with MIDI networks makes a good sense of humor absolutely
necessary :-) ), so I would not vote for deep sixing it.

Maybe a Generic Garbage Note would do it.

And since this note is 'gone' already, I have a question: How do
you deal with smiley faces that come at the end of a parenthetical
    phrase? I mean :-)) looks like a double-chinned alien. I've been
using a few spaces between the mouth and the right parenthesis
(like this :-) ), but it looks funny. Any inputs are welcome.

    Thanks,
    Rodney M. :-)))))))))))))))

Brad, I very much appreciate what you're doing as moderator. The re-org
of notes 1-15, the moving of for sale notes to where they belong,
and the moving of new serious topics to more appropriate old
serious topics are much needed operations.

...but I get very uneasy when I hear you talking about blasting complete
discussions, or even worse, parts of discussions. I am very much
against the removal of discussion notes (_any_ discussion notes).
To me, this is like re-writing history. When you remove notes,
you're changing the apparent circumstances which produced other
notes. For example, the removal of .17 from this topic leaves some
questions in my mind, since it was smack in the middle of a
     discussion.

I don't mean to nit pick, it's just something I feel about moderator
privilages and how they should be used.

Once again, I appreciate what you've done so far, but please don't
delete this note - it's history in the making.

    Gee, I dunno.

I think some of the generalized fears of censorship are a bit
out of place in this context.

I don't think Brad incapable of distinguishing notes that are content-free
personal battles from notes with real content?

However, I'll go with the flow. I now NEXT UNSEEN whenever I
see a note that looks like that (hoping that there isn't real
content in the parts I don't read). It not only keeps me from
wasting time reading it, it also keeps me from wasting time
    PARTICIPATING in it!

    Another opinion from me...

This file has always impressed me as a place where a bunch of friends
with a common interest get together and chew the fat over whatever
is on their minds, and it's usually MIDI or something related. It's
kind of like an electric LERDS-BIM...

It's more like a casual get-together as opposed to a business meeting.

Not that anyone has suggested it, but if the mandate was to cut
the S/N ratio why not go the whole 9 yards and set an agenda? Let
members take 'action items' and 'go off and work the issues'...

The 'noise' is a reflection of the noters' personalities and frankly,
I enjoy it. Even at 1200 baud from home.

As to noise, LET'S LEAVE IT IN! The one thing that has impressed
