1601.0. "**OUT OF DATE** - Submitting to COMMUSIC Tapes" by DREGS::BLICKSTEIN (Yo!) Fri Aug 05 1988 13:22

This is the official "How to submit material for inclusion on the
    Commusic tapes" note.

As much as I hate formalism, I am making some formal requests of
submittors to do things which will save me time and avoid confusion.
I won't refuse anything that doesn't follow my requests, but I'd
    appreciate an honest try.

1601.2The most frequently asked question...DREGS::BLICKSTEINYo!Fri Aug 05 1988 13:5737
    Here's a frequently asked question:

"What the deadline for the next Commusic tape?"

I guess the accurate answer is "before everyone else sends their stuff".

    Let me explain (again).

There is no "deadline". Think about it.

Suppose I said (in my "official" voice) "ALL COMMUSIC VI SUBMISSIONS
MUST BE IN BY SEPTEMBER 3rd", and suppose I had 20 minutes of
material on September 3rd. No, I would not go to the bother of
releasing a tape (and I suspect that only the two previous Commusic
tape producers know exactly how much bother that can be) for 20
    minutes worth of music.

You wanna pay $4 for 20 minutes worth of music? Cause that's what
I'm gonna charge regardless of how much music is on it. I only charge
my material costs, so it costs me the same to send out a blank tape
as it does to send out one with 90 minutes of Commusic on it.

This is how it works: I collect submissions until I get a C-90's worth
of material, then I "release" a tape. If it's important for you
to have your submission appear on THE *NEXT* Commusic tape, the only
meaningful answer I can give you is "well send it in just as soon
    as you can".

However, I think it's a mistake to rush things in order to have them
on the "next" tape as I have no intention of discontinuing the Commusic
tapes, and even if *I* did, someone else would almost certainly take
over. Thus, if it don't make it on this one, it'll be on the next one.

The interval between tapes has been decreasing anyway. More people,
    more productivity I suppose.

1601.3Revised Submission notes (see change bars)DREGS::BLICKSTEINYo!Mon Aug 08 1988 20:25102
To submit stuff to the Commusic tapes, you send a tape to me at:

    	Dave Blickstein
    	96 Robinson Road
    	Hudson, NH 03051

! Please do NOT use interoffice mail.

As much as I hate formalism, I am making some formal requests of
submittors to do things which will save me time and avoid confusion.
I won't refuse anything that doesn't follow my requests, but I'd
    appreciate an honest try.

Here's a list of requests, suggestions, etc.

o Regarding noise reduction, I can accept almost anything: Dolby B, Dolby
C and dbx. I can also accept VHS Hi-FI and Beta Hi-Fi.

o Completely label the tape itself: it should include:

	- your name,
	- the type of noise reduction used (or an EXPLICIT indication
	  that no NR was used),
	- contents,

o I would prefer it if the tape you sent me ONLY had what you wanted
submitted. Submissions like "use the 4th song on the B side" or
"it's cued to the right place", or "pick the one you like best"
present major difficulties for me. If not, it's up to you to
ensure that I can figure out which tunes are the ones you want submitted.

| o If you are submitting copyrighted material you must either:
!
! - Make an indication in the liner notes that you have obtained
! permission to use the piece, or,
!
! - acknowledge that the piece is "used without permission" and
! that you are wholely and solely responsible for the consequences
! of the use of the piece.

o Regarding copyrights and such - my function is to act as a "tape
duplicator and distributor". Let's make it clear that submittors are
entirely responsible for the content, and for whatever happens as
the result of submitting a tape. By submitting the tape, they authorize
me to provide duplicates of their material to ANYONE (***ANYONE***)
wants a Commusic tape. This could include unscrupulous
types who intend to "steal" the music and make money with it.
I do not "screen" Commusic tape orderers.

o I'm not planning to impose time limits, but a "customary" submission
is one song, or several songs totalling less than about 15 minutes.
Basically, no single person's submission should "dominate" a
      side of a tape.

o Sometimes you end up being the last thing on the tape, and I can't
include everything you've submitted. So please "prioritize" the
      songs.

o I STRONGLY recommand AGAINST sending valuable ("my only copy", etc)
tapes to me. If you feel you must, be sensible and break off
      the write-protect tabs

o From time-to-time people have asked me to arrange for "direct
from the master" recordings. In general I refuse (too complicated)
and therefore I reserve that right, especially if your proposed
method causes me any expense or inconvenience.

o Also PLEASE send me a note with the following:

+ Your name, home address, E-net address

+ Whether you want your submission tape back (Please include
85 cents for postage, I will reuse your mailing envelope)

+ Whether I should record the final Commusic tape over your
submission tape. (Please include 85 cents for postage, I will
	  reuse your mailing envelope)

+ Whether I should make a copy of the final Commusic tape on
another tape (please include $4 for cost of tape, postage
	  and mailing envelope).

				NOTE

If you give no indication of how you want your
tape return, or how you want to obtain a copy
of the final tape I will "accept" your submission
tape as a "donation" to the "fund for weary Commusic
producers". It may be destroyed, lost, mutilated,
		or spindled.

The key point is that if you don't make it clear
that you want the tape back intact, don't expect
that you will ever see it again.

I will send you confirmation when I receive your tape.

p.s. Yes, my mother has already said many times I shoulda been a lawyer.
She settled for me being a software engineer instead of a musician.
