1349.0. "Noter loses control" by SALSA::MOELLER (Heavily TTTTTT influenced) Tue May 03 1988 20:42

    I have a nice computer-based studio, right ? I mean, it works, I
put a lot of thought, time, and $$ into it, right ? And so I have
to go and screw it up, you know ? I mean, here's this nice 512K
Macintosh just SITTING there 99% of the time, so, like, I tell my
wife, who's in a Master's program at the University, I go, well,
here's this system, would you like to go halves on a printer so
you can do your papers with Macwrite. So she says, okay, and off
we go and get a nice new Imagewriter II with hardware warranty,
    okay ?

So next thing I know is both my wife and stepdaughter are Macintosh
junkies, right ? Comparing Macwrite tricks and playing with fonts,
doing papers and resumes and letters to friends, right ? So now
I can't get NEAR the thing.

So listen, if you have a cool PC you're using for music, just keep
your mouth shut about all the OTHER cool things it could be doing.

    Okay? - karl

It's like, you know, you've like only yourself to blame, you know?

Like, you should, you know, buy them their *own* 512K mac. One

Isn't that what bedtimes are for? I mean, you send the kids to bed so
you can regain control of the PC.

Until recently, I made the ultimate mistake of actually setting up my
Atari 1040ST right *on* my keyboard rack.

So not only did the kids take over with video-spectacular games, they
took over my bench, drum throne, and sequencer. I mean, I can't even
use my *equipment* when they took over my pc.

It could be worse. If they ever start dialing into systems you'll
    also lose your phone.

I have a friend I don't even bother trying to call cause his wife is
    perpetually dialed in.

Another reason to have a studio separate from the house. ;^)

Seriously; my wife and I had a rather long discussion about this
very subject, since we already had a PC clone with lots of memory,
CPU, disks, etc. but no MPU interface or anything. Since my studio
*isn't* attached to the house (condo living, you know how it is),
I didn't want to steal the PC and haul a stupid metal box all over
creation. So I bought an ST specifically for the studio. When we
move into a house next year, I will be building a new studio off
the back of the house anyway (it's part of the plans)...but the
    computer will still be separate.

1349.7mount it where they can't get to it ...MIZZOU::SHERMANBaron of GraymatterWed May 04 1988 13:4110
Hey, maybe you could invest $100 in a used hardware sequencer to get you
by during the sparse moments? I'm lucky. My wife usually just
wants me to get off the computer, sit with her on the couch and
rub her feet. My little boy, on the other hand, likes to play with
my toys. Now that I've mounted my stuff on a 3-high stand, he has
a little difficulty getting into my stuff 'cause he's just a wee
little guy ... heh, heh! That'll teach him to go throwing my QD's
    around!

Whatever you do, don't mention Dark Castle (game)! Maybe you could buy
them a Nintendo and the Legend of Zelda game, and get them hooked on
some other adventure. A MacAttack can be hazardous to your studio!

I thought about this overnight and came to the conclusion it really
    is your own fault.

You never shoulda bought one of them 'point and grunt' computers.
*REAL* men don't use mice. *REAL* men don't do windows. If you had
been writing in assembly language on a *real* computer you never
    would have had this happen.

RE: .0

I've practically BEGGED my wife to start using the computer. She
won't. She hates them and thinks they're stupid. I used to find this
annoying. Maybe I'll reconsider now... (My kid is still young enough
that she minds what I tell her.)

RE: .10

So tell us, Eddie. Are you using a VTxxx on a VMS system or a Silent
    700 tied to an IBM 1620?  So there.  Nyahhh.   &*}

    Karl,

Sounds like it's time to start checking the Want Ads (or your local
version of them) I hear that Commodore 64s are going cheap these
days, and that there's lotsa sequencing software out there for them

    re .10 -< Serves ya right, wimp-o.... >-

Quite frankly, the Macintosh blows away any interface that Digital
offers or will ever offer. I have both a GPX and Macintosh at home
and the MAC gets twice the use that the GPX gets, and were only
    taliking SE.

The MAC II only makes the comparison that much more ridiculous, you
can even boot UNIX and X11 on the MAC II. Not a real computer ?
    Think again.

You guys have convinced me that I should keep using my ESQ-1 as my
sequencer and forget about getting a PC. No one will ever take
it away from me to play video games.

Actually, if I want a video interface I can get some software
for "my" Roland S-550 sampler (which I don't own yet) that
sorta turns it into a PC-like sequencer.

The more and more I read about the S-550 the more and more I'm
convinced that it's not REALLY a sampler, it's just a PC with
some hardware that makes sampling possible.

Now if they'd only get their act together and provide a SYSEX
dump utility for the damn thing.

Not really to get sucked down a vortex, but MAC's and VAX's are
two completely different animals. The VAX may seem slower, but
remember, it's doing a whole lot more. Granted, if it's wasting
time doing things you don't care about, then you'ld be silly to
buy one. The VAX has virtual memory, ast delivery, full multiuser
security, and the best damn debugger in the business. It is kind
of overkill for someone who wants to use MACwrite.

re .0	Sounds like an upgrade opportunity to me...

Either a Mac II for the studio, or later next year a 68030 based
multi user system running A/UX, 8 Mbytes should do it, but 16 would
    be nice.

Gee. Thanks for all the support, esp. the it's-your-own-faults and
serves-ya-rights.. of COURSE it does ! It was stupid ! That's why
I'm warning you ! In order to have fulltime access to our studios
we ahve to promulgate the concept that computers are for technoids
    only.

Re the ones that said 'send the kids to be early' and 'put it up
out of reach', these options are not available to me. I'm talking about
my wife and 22-year-old stepdaughter here. 'Scurry along now, Dad
wants to make music' just won't cut it. At least I put the Mac/printer
setup in the living room, so I can play music (if not record into
the Mac) in the studio. As for the suggestion I buy a Commodore,
uh, no thanks. I like Performer.
