1152.0. "Korg SQ8 Hardware Sequencer" by SYOMV::CLARY () Sat Jan 16 1988 02:10

    Does anybody have experience with a KORG SQ-8 sequencer?
    I saw one in a music store ($135 new) it seems to have
    quite a few features.

    I plan to use a sequencer with a CASIO HT-700. This is a
    very low end midi keyboard and I don't want to spend more
    for a sequencer than my keyboard cost, however I also don't
    want to spend so little that I don't have the feature that I
    need. I'm new to music and synthesizers and midi, (the recent
    technology got me interested and now I'm hooked).

    Any info would be appreciated.

1152.2OK what now??BUGEYE::CLARYSun Jan 17 1988 14:413
    Are there any sequencers with features similar to the SQ-8 that
    have storage to tape capability, in the same price range. I can
    see the obvious limitations in the lack of this feature.

	The only one at THAT low a price is the Casio SZ-1 - 3,000 notes,
I believe it stores to a RAM,... Not a bad unit, but internal note capacity
is low. Sam Ash was selling it for $149 last summer.

    The SZ-1 uses the same architecture as the sequencer in the
    CZ-5000....or maybe vice versa. The CZ actually has double the
    storage.

    The SZ can store up to 1700 notes real-time entered or 3400 notes
    step-time entered. If you do some tracks in each mode, you will
    get something in between in storage.

    I know the CZ has eight tracks, but I think I recall the SZ has
    only four tracks. Tracks entered in real-time cannot be edited
    in step-time or vice versa.

    An OK sequencer, but certainly one of the stranger architectures
    of available machines. Built into the CZ, it's OK, but as a
    stand-alone...????

    BTW, I would guess the storage is tape, since the CZ-5000 can store patches
    to RAM, but not sequences (but either to tape).

    How about a used Roland MSQ-100 or Yamaha QX7....I see them in want
    ads all the time for $150 and less.

1152.5Woof...JAWS::COTE0 for 15Mon Jan 18 1988 13:068
    1700 notes is squat. Even 3000 isn't much memory.

    The memory limitation, combined with the lack of outboard storage
    capacity, make this unit sound like your basic bow-wow....

    Listen to Brian. Buy a used Roland or Yamaha.

	BTW, Korg has a new sequencer in the works... the SQD-8. Saw it in
an ad in Electronic Musician. Features 8-tracks, real or step time recording,
and...

    Didn't the SQD series also have the dubious feature of
    PRE-quantization? Kinda like a drum machine, where you pick the
    resolution *before* you input???

    Anybody seen this SQD-8 yet???

    I saw an ad for the new 707 keyboard that also pictured this little
    bugger and (surprise) it looks like the SQ-8 with a quick-disk
    drive added.
