1106.0. "Bizarre Recording Techniques" by MTBLUE::BOTTOM_DAVID (Fat man in the tub w/da bluz) Tue Dec 29 1987 15:45

I was browsing the liner notes on Hoy! Hoy! a Little Feat rarities
album the other night and came accross a gem

Seems that when Feat recorded rocket in my pocket the entire studio
was empty, Lowell George wanted a differnt sound on the guitar track
so they mike'd the git, played this out through all the monitors
in the studio loud, and then mike'd the hallways and mixed it down
to a single track for the record....

Now that seems a bit bizzarre but interesting...

Another...King Crimsom used a slightly different technique for the
guitar solo on, ah dumshit attack!, the first song on Islands I
think, anyway they pumped it down a long hallway with mikes at three
different intervals and used it as a primative delay system...this
sounds real bizzarre as there is no reverb sound just raw guitar
    with three distinct 'hits'

So what bizzarre techniques have you heard of or tried yourselves?

There's a VERY long (half mile?) abandoned railroad tunnel near
Clinton. We've used it as a low-budget analog reverb for a few
tunes.

Gotta keep the arrangements simple, though. The intro probably
won't die down until the middle of the last chorus.

I've discovered that reverse gating reverb (or whatever it's
called) can produce neat sounds on a lot more than just drums.

I've tried it on vocals, keyboards, guitar, you name it, and it
always produces something interesting and "different" sounding.

Don't forget the bizarre little presets on the MVII, like simulated
    reverse reverb, multitapping and blooming.

Hmm I used a reverse gated reverb for a slide solo on one of my
    submissions to CM IV...sounded great...

I like the bloom preset #45 on the MV II...I've been using it all
weekend trying to get a solo down on a tape....

I took my drumset and set it up in the entrance to a mall. The
entrance was about a 200 foot long concrete hall. There were outlets
on the walls, so my friend held the mics in different positions,
I hit each drum several times, and then played the whole set. Of
course, when you do this at 3:00 on Sunday morning, be prepared
for the security guard to run you off when he finds you.
