1052.0. "Ensoniq Mirage Homebrew Sample Exchange/Review" by LOLITA::DIORIO () Wed Dec 09 1987 19:41

    This topic is specifically for exchanging and reviewing homebrew
    Mirage samples. From what I'm told, it is a no-no to use DECmail for
    sending discs around the country and/or world. I'm sure that
    methods similar to the ones used to send Commusic tapes around will
    work with discs as well. It might be best to discuss the details
    of exchanging discs with others via mail, and save the space here
    mainly for reviewing other people's samples.

    Suggestions regarding
    altering loop points, refining sampling techniques, finding good
    source material (records, tapes, etc.) are requested and solicited.
    I'm hoping we can benefit from this not only by getting free samples
    from each other, but also by helping each other become better at
    sampling with the Mirage.

    Also, requests for specific sampled sounds are encouraged.
    (For example, not owning a DX or TX series synth, I would really
    like to get some of these sounds from someone who has one of these
    synths--and who has a Mirage too, of course!)

    Disclaimer:

    Remember that it is illegal to exchange factory
    samples, and therefore the official stand must be to discourage
    that here.

1052.1Hammond B3 sample availableLOLITA::DIORIOMon Dec 14 1987 16:357
    I have a Hammond B3 sample with percussion that anyone is welcome
    to. It sounds just like Keith Emerson's organ sound. Contact me
    (by DECmail) and make arrangements to send me a blank disc. All I ask
    in return is for you to review the sample. Give me constructive criticism
    and/or suggest different loop points if you wish.

1052.2Two more homebrew samples...LOLITA::DIORIOThu Dec 17 1987 14:0113
    Two more samples that may be of use to you Mirage owners out there:

    Yes Brass Hit-- The brass hit from "Owner of a Lonely Heart" (by
    Yes)

    Beat It Bass Hit-- The resonant bass hit heard at the beginning
    of "Beat It" (By M. Jackson)

    These are free to anyone who sends me a blank disc. Contact me at
    LOLITA::DIORIO to make arrangements.

1052.3Try this...JAWS::COTE0 for 15Tue Jan 19 1988 11:2425
    Not really a sample but more a 'performance' hint...

    Whilst mucking around in the studio this weekend, I threw in the
    sax sample that's combined with the acoustic bass. You Mirage
    owners know the sample...

    Usually I'm very disappointed with this sample. Yeah it sounds like
    a sax, but there's no expression. Well, Sunday I was surprised!!
    There was a very definite 'overblown' quality to the sample, a
    real 'honk' on some of the notes! On others there was a most definite
    overtone 1 octave up from the sample. I liked it.

    One thing worried me. "Did I just mung this disc? Is that why the
    sample sounds so different?" Nope!! The effect was easily stopped
    and started on command.

    All you have to do is make sure the Mirage is in LOCAL mode (Para-
    meter 30 = On) and then make sure whatever appears from the MIDI
    OUT port is folded back to the MIDI IN. (Yes, you lose 1/2 the
    polyphony as each note gets played twice. It's worth the sacrifice.)

    I noticed higher notes had a tendency to squeal more than the lower
    ones, like a real sax.

1052.4(formatting disk available??)HPSTEK::RENEPredictive SpontaneityMon Feb 29 1988 15:3412
          I have had my Mirage for about 2 years now, and have been
    very satisfied with the sound disks I have. I am very interested
    in getting some of the 'homebrew' samples (esp. B3) from Mike D.
    The problem is that I do not have any more spare formated disks
    (the ones from Ensoniq) nor do I have the formatting disk. I'm
    stuck. Does anybody know where I can get the formatting disk?
    I have a box of 3.5" un(Ensoniq)formatted disks that I wish I
    could use.

             I'd really appreciate any info...

    Frank, if you can't find one for sale I'll be glad to format your
    blank discs for you.

    In a similar vein, I've heard it was possible to *legally*
    copy the OS. Anyone know how?

    Frank,

    I'd be glad to send you my B3 samples. Just send me a disc. I'll
    format it for you, put the samples on it, and send it back to you.
    I think the formatting disc sells for about $10. Call me at DTN
    223-3782, or send mail to LOLITA::DIORIO to discuss this stuff if
    you wish.

1052.7You can have someone make a formatting floppyAKRON::RATASKITom Rataski - SWS Akron,OhioSun Mar 06 1988 21:1629
    Re: .4

    For what its worth...

    - Get someone to format a floppy for you with the formatter disk.
    - Write protect it.
    - Label it "DISK FORMATTING PROGRAM"
    - Boot it. You will get the 'FD' in your display.
    - Put your unformatted floppy in the drive.
    - Hit "SAVE SEQ"
    - It will then format your unformatted floppy into a formated Mirage
      floppy and give you a 'FC" when completed.

    I stumbled upon this the other day while playing around with the
    Mirage rack mount I acquired from my brother. My Floppy says
    MIRAGE FD VER 1.0 at the bottom.

    Lots cheaper than buying one of Ensoniq's floppies.

    If you need to get some one to make a FORMATTING FLOPPY for you,
    contact me at AKRON::RATASKI and we can make arrangements to have
    it done, though I imagine there are a number of folks with Mirages
    closer to you than Ohio.

    BTW what is the current version of MASOS and MIRAGE OS?

1052.9FYI: Cheap blank disc sourceOILCAN::DIORIOMon Mar 07 1988 16:198
    I found a good source for blank 3.5" discs that I'd like to share
    with all of you. Service Merchandise has Bonus (made by Verbatim)
    single-sided double density discs for $9.92!! This is a special
    11-pack (11 for the price of 10 promotion I guess). This brings
    them down to about 90 cents per disc!

1052.11More offerings!OILCAN::DIORIOMon Mar 07 1988 16:3815
    In addition to the Keith Emerson-type Hammond B3 sound, I have two
    other Hammond organ samples to offer:

    One is the full drawbar Hammond organ sound. No percussion. No key
    click. This is the organ sound heard on "Let It Be" (Beatles) and
    "Maybe I'm Amazed" (Paul McCartney). That nice churchy Hammond sound.

    The other organ sound features Harmonic Percussion, but at the 4' stop
    (octave above the fundamental as opposed to the 5th above the fundamental
    heard in the Keith Emerson sound). Also features a fair amount
    of key click. A good jazz or rock organ sound--not as raucous as
    the Keith Emerson sound.

1052.12B3 sample review...wow!HPSTEK::RENEPredictive SpontaneityThu Mar 10 1988 16:2155
       I was in the market for some new Mirage sounds and I sent Mike
    D. a disk. Here is what I got:

            lower+ upper

    1   Hammond B3 (perc @ 2 2/3' Emerson)

    2   Hammond B3 (perc @ 4')

    3   Hammond B3 (full drawbar)

            I played with these from about 11:30 to 1:30 am last night.
    (insert tired face here.) Let me say that the sounds are *incredable*.
    First the Kieth Emerson sample (#1). The best part of this sample
    is the attack. When I was playing with it, I really thought that
    the keys contacts on the mirage were oxidized to hell! What a dirty
    sound! Mike really captured the key click that only a real organ
    can give you. The Emerson organ sample is *exact*. I played along
    with hoedown (well, ok, parts of hoedown) and all I could say is
    'yep, that's it!' I will use this sample when the band gigs.

           Some suggestions:
    1) The samples are velocity sensitive! they really shouldn't be.
    2) The individual wavesample levels could all be brought up.
       For example, any sound from this disk is lower in volume
       than other disks that I have.
    3) The loop points are very audible in the last 1/2 octave or so.
       It is noticable only when hitting 1 key and holding it. when
       you hit a chord,or play a lick, you can't even tell.

         I will modify the appropriate parameters to fix the above
    (except for loop points) . It won't be too hard.

         Sample #2 didn't have the B__ls that the first had.
    It is more mellow I guess. These wavesamples were very low in
    volume.

         Sample #3 is another winner! Full, rich, dirty (but not too)
    Hammond. Sounds great with outboard leslie effect. I will use this
    quite often to. Mike calls this a "let it be" or "baby I'm amazed"
    sound.

         After playing with these sounds a while, I turned on the ESQ-1
    to compare the new samples to. I had programmed an organ on the
    ESQ that I was quite pleased with. YYYYYYYYuckKKKK oooooo *phttt!!*
    That is what I called an ORGAN ???? Mike's B3 sample is the best
    *REAL* organ sound I have heard any synth or sampler do. You gotto
    hear this mirage owners!!!

    GREAT JOB MIKE !! all without a visual editor too...sheeze!!

    Re .14 Mark, Sounds good, but the bad news is that I don't have
    the money to buy a MAC yet. The good news is that I'm
    heading into the busy season with the band, and I should have some
    money burning a hole in my pocket in a couple of months.

1052.17MANTHN::EDDWe could be heroes...Thu Oct 03 1991 18:195
    Nope, at least not with standard Ensoniq S/W. There are (were?) some
    companies making S/W that could make any disk bootable, but who knows
    if they still be in existance...
